That St Patrick's day is just being pushed an excuse for drunken excess?

St Patrick's day in the UK now just seems to have become a hyper-commercialised piss up - including the days before.

Coming home on the tube last night I a group of women wearing little green hats, one throwing up on the platform while the others laughed and the area I got off was full of pissed blokes in Ireland sports top generally being obnoxious and pissing outside the station.

It wasn't even St Patrick's day!

All the pubs/supermarkets seem to be promoting this time just as another excuse to get pissed.

"Seems to have become"?? I can remember it being like that for at least the last 25 years!

gillybeanz · 17/03/2018 18:14

Some people will be in a state like the ones being sick, peeing outside the station, others won't.
I met a group of couples going for a meal at a pub where they had entertainment on.
One woman told me she'd had her fancy dress costume for a month, to beat the rush.
They didn't strike me to be the type to be making trouble later.

deadringer · 17/03/2018 18:15

Irish living in Ireland too, and imo it's only young singles who get pissed on st Patrick's day. For everyone I know it's a day off and a chance for some family time.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 17/03/2018 18:28

It was nice of him to die in Lent though. Not that I need an excuse these days. Smile

sonjadog · 17/03/2018 18:31

It has always been a piss up, at least for the 40-odd years I've been celebrating it.

LoislovesStewie · 17/03/2018 18:34

Slainte mhath! To you all.

isadoradancing123 · 17/03/2018 18:37

What on earth would op be jealous of, just what?

RLOU88 · 17/03/2018 18:38

I’m thinking the same but only because I am actually jealous lol. At home pregnant and my partner (his dads side family Irish) is out having a piss up! Green eyed Monster :(

NotAllTimsWearCapes · 17/03/2018 18:39

😂😂😂 at this thread! Like the English need an excuse to get boke drunk!

NotAllTimsWearCapes · 17/03/2018 18:42

I'm Irish living in Irish

Grin go drunk luke, you’re Home!

Flapjacking · 17/03/2018 18:43

As I said I'm not jealous and maybe uniquely I don't have any Irish heritage/links - maybe I am one of the few in London who don't!

Some people in the UK use weddings as an excuse to get shitfaced. So lets slate everyone who celebrates weddings....

MelanieCheeks · 17/03/2018 18:52

Are you sure it was a football top? Not, say, rugby supporters in town for the greatest day in Irish rugby history?

DwangelaForever · 17/03/2018 18:52

Irish living in Ireland (well Northern Ireland) and I'm currently sat on my sofa watching you've been framed 😴😴 I am pregnant though lol.

It really embarrasses me that everyone claims to be Irish on st Patrick's day 👀 especially Americans. Like why are they so obsessed with their heritage over there? Oh I'm one quarter Irish, 1 quarter Mexican, 1 quarter Italian and 1 quarter Slovakian 👀. Stop it you're American 🙄🙄🙄

NotAllTimsWearCapes · 17/03/2018 18:56

I think that answers it’s own question Grin they would rather be anything other than American.

Weebo · 17/03/2018 19:00

I'm Irish living in Ireland and actually love how proud Irish-Americans are over there.

I would love to spend a St Paddys in Boston or New York one day.

Belphegor · 17/03/2018 19:04

I love the "jealous" comment, how bonkers.

I think it's a bit sad. And highlights the UK's drinking problem. Drink till we puke.

I live in the middle of a city and was woken up a few times by men in green shirts vomming on the footpath or fighting. It's so normalised here. I have just moved back from a country without a huge drinking culture and it was so lovely. Why do we do this?

Mammysin · 17/03/2018 19:07

Live and let live!

StripySocksAndDocs · 17/03/2018 19:09

Those that drink a lot will drink a lot. But it's not all the day is about. There's plenty else on in Ireland today.

I feel that Britain's drink culture is very similar to Ireland's. So it's not really surprising that St Patrick's day has been used as an excuse in Britain too.

Amanduh · 17/03/2018 19:12

It’s the plastic paddy social media posting that I can’t stand.
The night out, drinking, madness part - a Friday night in London is The Best Thing - I wouldn’t need a Saint as an excuse!

PutTheBunnyBackInTheBox · 17/03/2018 19:12

I love the "jealous" comment, how bonkers.

^^ This

I'm Irish in (N) Ireland and the most anyone I know is doing, is walking up Slemish. The eejits.

LivLemler · 17/03/2018 19:20

I'm Irish and it's just not that big a deal here. As kids we went to mass and then a parade (oh the glamour of the baton twirlers!). As a teen there were big firework displays - is Skyfest still a thing in Dublin? Haven't lived there in ages.

People who go out for every other occasion will indeed be out tonight. I'll be snoozing in front of the tv.

I did spend it in Boston one year - that was a bit mental. And not associated with the naicest crowd. I'd say NY is a bit better. We did end up at the house party of a friend of a friend and were hugely welcomed as prized "actually Irish" guests. We were the only ones there not wearing green. Grin

Flapjacking · 17/03/2018 19:50

Agree on the plastic paddy stuff too.

Butterymuffin · 17/03/2018 20:04

Who are you suggesting is at fault for this, OP? Capitalism Yep, basically (though I'm not the OP). Companies have decided it's a way to flog more booze and people are buying into it. Saw a 'St Patrick's Weekend' sign on a pub earlier. Just blatant marketing. Oddly people on here hate that when it's Valentine's Day but apparently it's fine when it's drink focused.

TheNewSchmoo · 17/03/2018 20:05

Yes, it is. And I love it.....
