Ski lift accident in Georgia (looks horrific)

Rockerfeller · 17/03/2018 02:24

We went skiing last year and I hated the lifts so much.

Anyway. This looks horrific, apparently the power went the brakes failed and gravity just did it's job with horrific results.

Aibu to think a more up to date system would have stopped it from
Happening? Or was it inevitable when the power went?

Skiing isn't a privileged sport anywhere where there are mountains.

The video is certainly international news worthy as its terrifying to watch for anyone who has ever been on a ski lift

Like fuck is it. I hate this idea that the news should be spectacular. These are people's actual lives. Imagine your loved ones caught up in a horrible accident that happened to be caught on camera. How would you like people in Uzbekistan or wherever to gawp at it on the telly?

frannyandzooeyglass · 17/03/2018 10:42

keilninnock

I thank you. Your posts have reminded me that there are people who are absolutely fucking stupid in this world.

Keilninnock · 17/03/2018 14:05

Let's leave it there. I am entitled to an opinion and I don't have to agree with you.
However, calling people morons and the other stuff said is really unpleasant.
I could say what I think of you but I am not that bothered; about skiers or housewives on the internet.

extinctspecies · 17/03/2018 14:07

housewives on the internet

Dangerous move, Keilninnock.

I don't think you'll be allowed to "leave it there"...

Keilninnock · 17/03/2018 14:12

As far as I know I can't be forced to engage. It's so tedious. People have opinions. And using words like moron shows ignorance and spite. Like I said, I don't really care. I do care about real humans and that's all that matters to me.

extinctspecies · 17/03/2018 14:13

Stop engaging then!

CactusSpikes · 17/03/2018 14:15

Can someone put the Benny Hill theme song over it?

Unnoticed · 17/03/2018 14:15

Keilninnock - were the people on the chair lift not real humans?

EduCated · 17/03/2018 14:23

skiing is far from a privallaged sport, you can get fairly cheap deals, not much different to a package all inclusive to Spain for a fortnight. Your analogy to the the homeless is quite ludicrous - I am assuming that you never go on holiday?

I’d consider a fortnight all inclusive in Spain pretty privileged to be honest, it’s not like a weekend in Skeggy, is it? I’ve been skiing and yes it is expensive and it is a privilege. It’s a bit disingenuous to try and claim skiing is an accessible and affordable option for ge majority, particularly from the UK.

But anyway, I do agree that it’s irrelevant at best. It does look horrible, and 10 minor injuries is incredibly lucky, the way people were being flung off. Lucky also that it happened in winter with snow on the ground, which no doubt lessened the impact.

I’m not clear Keil, is it Georgians who aren’t real humans, or housewives?

Certcert · 17/03/2018 14:38

I can't even believe you are saying you think privileged skiers deserve to get hurt, you sound like a dog awful person being happy at other people getting hurt

I dont think that's what Keilninnock meant.

I took it to mean that s/he has more compassion for someone who is injured, through no choice of their own; rather than going skiing; which will come with some risk. I dont think Keilninnock said they didn't have compassion?

Anyway, awful accident. I daren't click on the link Sad

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 17/03/2018 14:49

Privileged or not it's still a horrible thing to happen!

whifflesqueak · 17/03/2018 14:49

I agree with keilninnock’s post in the sense that it wasn’t “horrific”. Not in comparison to other stories that gain similar distribution.

Boko Haram stealing girls from their schools, Russian attempted assassinations on British soil, Syrian hospitals being bombed to smithereens full of sick and injured children...

All compare quite poorly to a story about malfunctioning ski equipment causing minor injuries to a handful of people on holiday.

I know the stories don’t have to be directly compared. It’s not a competition. I just don’t understand how this story gained so much attention. Is it because of the video? Does it feel more immediate to people?

extinctspecies · 17/03/2018 15:08

It wouldn't even have been reported in the news if it wasn't for the video.

extinctspecies · 17/03/2018 15:08

because (fortunately) only minor injuries.

Slartybartfast · 17/03/2018 15:11

Terrifying, nobody seems to have been seriously hurt, I hope

Slartybartfast · 17/03/2018 15:11

Video makes the news

BackforGood · 17/03/2018 15:24

Obviously frightening at the time, if you or your loved ones were on the lift, but I don't think it is that "horrific", when you compare with daily stories that don't even make National news let alone international.
Nor do I think it is a bad thing it was filmed - it will surely help with the enquiry - evidence from actual footage is so much more useful than eye witness reports afterwards.

Sparklesocks · 17/03/2018 15:52

Very scary! But i think filming is important so there’s an accurate record of what happened, particularly for liability reasons.

SB1189 · 17/03/2018 16:06

@Certcert

I took it to mean that s/he has more compassion for someone who is injured, through no choice of their own; rather than going skiing; which will come with some risk. I dont think Keilninnock said they didn't have compassion?

This is nonsense. Every activity after you get out of bed (which is a choice) comes with some risk. Where do you draw the line? You could apply that logic to any situation. House fire - go live outside, no sympathy. Car crash - walk, don't use a car, no sympathy. Mugged - don't live in the city, no sympathy.

Certcert · 17/03/2018 16:12

SB1189, you could apply what logic to those situations, but I was responding to a specific situation.

HTH

Certcert · 17/03/2018 16:13

SB1189, have you read the thread? My response was in response to someone else who had responded to OP...

Mamaryllis · 17/03/2018 16:20

Just to reassure people - of you are heading for any of the major resorts in France or North America, the lifts do have an entirely separate (and automatic) braking system if the chair travels six inches in the wrong direction. It is (theoretically) not possible for this incident to happen unless you are skiing in some of the lesser regulated Eastern European resorts.
That’s why everywhere else you see footage of people being winched down from chairs, and why that type of evacuation is regularly practiced by resort personnel.

InvisibleUnicorn · 18/03/2018 20:46

@Mamaryllis but this lift was manufactured and supplied by a western company and installed only in 2007/8 so very recent.

I think we need to wait until the safety and official reports.
