To miss shopping in the 90's and early noughties

I used to love shopping but now there are very few shops I actually like. I miss Jeffrey Rogers, Bay Trading Co, MK One, Pilot etc. Not high end clothing granted but there were always things I liked.

These days a lot of stores are online but I can't be bothered with what would probably be constant sending things back as a lot of things look great on the hanger but crap on me. Primark is ok but hell to shop in when I can go as it is so busy and don't get me started on the mirrors. New Look is ok as is H & M too but really that's about it. I actually prefer charity shops and car boots now but today I just feel really nostalgic for the high street of yesteryear.

Does anyone else feel the same?

Namechangetempissue How dare you! I love my fairy pointy shoed monstrosities and long for their eventual fashion return!

There is still an Etal in Brussels, although it only sells underwear.

Bettyfood · 15/03/2018 07:29

I hated shopping before online was available. Traipsing around the high street for hours looking for something that didn't exist.

nowater34 · 15/03/2018 07:37

Just mentioned this thread to DH, who’s a Croydon boy. His friend loved Reebok Classics so much he would mix n match, eg left foot was white with orange trim & right foot in white with green trim. 😂😂

Origamoo · 15/03/2018 07:42

I really want some massive platform trainers now Grin

mrsnec · 15/03/2018 07:43

I still have a top from Bay Trading. Wonder if it fits? I was a big fan of Jeffrey Rogers too.

MsGameandWatching · 15/03/2018 07:44

Where else could I source my Acupuncture trainers (anyone remember those?)

I had completely forgotten about these till I read that, yet I lived in them for about two years. One black pair, one grey and navy pair. Loved them.

Origamoo · 15/03/2018 07:48

MotherofaSurvivor I’ve still got a little bit of Les Belles de Ricci perfume in the green and pink bottle left over from about 2001! I don’t use it any more but just have a smell now and then for the memories Grin I wore it all the time and my boyfriend said he loved it so it was like my signature scent Grin

I think i am few years too early for this thread but i'm glad to read about Hyper Hyper memories.

A pp mentioned Carnaby Street. Going 'shopping' there was most often not a shopping trip at all. It was a chance to casually stand about looking fabulous Grin In the late 80s you had the Mod revival, the tail end of punk mixed in the new romantics AND all the lovely goths. It was all so colourful and let live. Every shop was a little cave of delights tailored to one trend, full of stuff you couldn't get on the average high st.

I remember walking into Carnaby St in ... probably around the very late 80s/early 90s and seeing (i think) a Boots. A bloody Boots! Shock The HORROR. Carnaby Street had died. Sold out. I never went back.

Opposite Hyper Hyper was Kensington Market. A weird fantastic labyrinth of a place. Again - just as much a place to pose as shop. I have a vague recollection of a market below street level in Chelsea High St as well. So dark you could hardly see anything anyone had on sale Grin But soooooo cool.

IJustLostTheGame · 15/03/2018 07:58

Does anyone remember Cult Clothing??
In the early noughties I lived in punky fish, road jeans, a baby g watch and acupuncture trainers. when I wasnt wearing my new rock boots.

I bought some wide jeans with a stripe down them from Zara early this year because they reminded me of my road jeans. I had a 24 inch waist but I'd buy road jeans in a 30 and have them hanging off my teeny weeny hips with an army surplus belt.

Those were the days.

Roomba · 15/03/2018 08:05

I still wear a few cardigans from Bay Trading Blush

They've lasted many years, washed well, kept their shape and colour - unlike clothing bought far more recently (I'm sure I've binned plenty stuff from there that fell to bits too, for balance).

Roomba · 15/03/2018 08:06

I had a few pairs of Rocketdog boots in the early 2000s, that I absolutely adored - do they still exist?

IJustLostTheGame · 15/03/2018 08:08

Roomba rocketdog do exist! I bought a pair from schuh last year

Laiste · 15/03/2018 08:08

I've still got a Punky Fish bag! Strong pink plastic with black cord handle. It's had many uses, but now it stores all the little hand knitted cardies my mum made for us when DD4 was tiny! Grin

HobnobBob · 15/03/2018 08:14

Ex’cla-ma’tion perfume! And So..? Tribe and Charlie Red.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 15/03/2018 08:55

I went through the early 90s reeling of Loulou - I thought I was so much more chic than the AnaïsAnaïs crowd.

Chattycat78 · 15/03/2018 09:00

Love this thread. Although I’m starting to feel old now!

Loved bay trading. And Etam.

I also used impulse 02 :)

Chattycat78 · 15/03/2018 09:01

Ha tribe! It smelled a bit like a fruit juice! I loved it!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 15/03/2018 09:01

Oh, I love this thread!

Kookai was so posh and very expensive. In sixth form I bought a ridiculous denim handbag from them. It was roughly the size of two paperback books and I still insisted on squeezing all my notes into it and using it as a school bag. Thereby constantly having to agonise about which textbooks I could get away without. I was such a twit.

I had a sequin top from Bay Trading that was a really revolting shade of sort of pastal-y aqua, and it looked awful. I have photos of me proudly wearing it. It was designed to flaunt your boobs and I was a small b cup on a good day, so it is sort of concave in the wrong places.

I do think there were some bloody hideous things out there but I miss the delight of thinking almost everything was gorgeous. I had my first ever pair of heels from Faith, and they were pale caramel suede with curvy wood heels and a tiny brown bow on the front, and I adored them.

In my school Jane Norman was so trendy people sold the bags to each other. I couldn't afford it (and my mum would have murdered me).

LRDtheFeministDragon · 15/03/2018 09:02

Oh, god, and I remember at university Kookai went through a phase of doing corsets. I had one with a flower pattern and olive-green laces, and a gold-and-brown brocade one. I thought they were a totally normal thing to wear with your jeans. I was a size 6 so what the fuck I thought I needed with a corset, I do not know!

MagicFajita · 15/03/2018 09:06

@nowater34 I remember those , the canvas shoes with the small platform sole. I think they were called paladiums or something.

Motoko · 15/03/2018 09:09

All the above shops, but I really miss Habitat as it was in those days, affordable furniture and rugs and chunky mugs and everything you could need.

God, I LOVED Habitat! My dad used to get the catalogue, and I spent hours looking through it, deciding how I'd decorate my house when I grew up. When he died and we were clearing his house, we found a couple from the early/mid 70s, so I've kept them.
I was so disappointed when they became expensive, but I think Ikea have filled the empty spot, and I love Ikea.

I was a punk in my teens, so I did most of my clothes shopping in Camden Market, the Great Gear market in Kings Road, flea markets and jumble sales (my friends and I used to queue with all the old dears waiting to have a good rummage at the jumble sales). I did like Miss Selfridge though. Their style was a bit edgier than most of the highstreet shops.
Does anyone remember the range of stuff they did with the red lipstick print? I had a dressing gown from that range and was reminded of it the other day when I saw a blouse with a print like that (I think it was in Asda).

In the 90s, I liked Bay Trading, and I still have a spaghetti strap vest top from there. It's shrunk a little in length, but otherwise, despite being worn regularly, it's still in good condition.

Haisuli · 15/03/2018 09:15

I used to love shopping so much. It was my favourite hobby.I loved Miss Selfridge, Warehouse and French Connection. And going into Top Shop in London was the ultimate thrill.
I'm rubbish at it now - i'm a ninja online....but get in an actual shop and I don't know what to do with myself. I kind of wander round confused, touching things and feeling a bit panicky.

Saladd0dger · 15/03/2018 09:24

I remember getting excited as a kid when Mum announced we were going to c&a. Used to love that shop. I believe they are still going in Europe just not the uk anymore
