To think this company are Cheeky Fuckers

Went for an interview yesterday and they rang this morning to say I did not get the job it had gone to an internal candidate.
I had to do a presentation at the interview and the person who rang me this morning who is the manager of the company has asked if they can use the presentation in training as it was brilliant.
It caught me of guard and I just spluttered and said I don’t really think so.
The manager seemed annoyed and said fine and out the phone down
AIBU to say said no and think they are cheeky fuckers. My DH who this has actually happened to before said I should have offered them use of it for a fee.
DH did this when the same happened to him, they declined and thought he would give it them for free.

I might have said that as the internal candidate was clearly the best candidate for the job surely you'll be using theirs!! Wink

In reality I'd have done the same as you or even worse on the spot might have agreed.

If it were to happen in future I'd be copyright marking all my materials and asking for a fee as per your DH!

Sorry you didn't get that job. Good luck with your next application. At least you know the presentation is good! I suspect the whole interview process was a sham unfortunately for you.

expatinscotland · 14/03/2018 10:01

CFs! Fuck charging them a fee, either, they'd never pay it. More front than Sainsbo's. Glad you didn't roll over and hand it over to them. Hope they don't have access to your materials.

Chocywockydodahhhhhh · 14/03/2018 10:03

It’s the story of my life that internal candidates are always seem to get any job I am up for. It was my last ditch attempt to get a job i could cope with while having 15 seizures a week. Guess I am on to claim ESA- joy

Chocywockydodahhhhhh · 14/03/2018 10:04

No they don’t have access to it thank goodness or I have but the feeling they would have just used it.
I was not surprised an internal candidate got it as some of the questions asked you would not have been able to give a really good answer unless you worked for the company

expatinscotland · 14/03/2018 10:07

They wasted your time. Arseholes.

Chocywockydodahhhhhh · 14/03/2018 10:09

I really think it would be better if company’s could just offer a job to an internal candidate or always be bake to advertise internally.
At least then you would know you had a fair shot at any advertised jobs.

CF indeed!
Should have said 50k and it's yours.

DalekDalekDalek · 14/03/2018 10:13

Cheeky fuckery of the highest order!

Isthisnameacceptable01 · 14/03/2018 10:19

Yanbu. I would be so annoyed. I cannot believe the cheek of the manager.

greendale17 · 14/03/2018 10:22

I would have said no too

TheRebel · 14/03/2018 10:26

You were quite right to say no, work for an interview is to show what you can do but actual work that they will use for their business needs to be paid for.

There’s a blog called Ask A Manager who’s written about this before, even though it’s more geared towards a US audience the advice is still good.

Titaniumpins · 14/03/2018 10:27

YANBU if they had called and offered to pay you for it then maybe. I'd have probably spluttered ok then having been caught off guard :-) Cheeky beggars

Blackteadrinker77 · 14/03/2018 10:30

That is very cheeky and I would add a Glass door interview review.

Anniegetyourgun · 14/03/2018 10:36

I'd guess if they had any intention of paying for it they would have offered up front, or immediately after the OP had declined the initial request. Definitely CF.

DS3 was applying for jobs in the software industry a few years ago and it was pretty usual to be asked to produce a working program as part of the application. I did wonder how often there really was a vacancy... (I know there was in at least one of them because he got the job!)

Dustysparrow · 14/03/2018 10:39

It sounds like you are very skilled at what you do - could you do it freelance or as a consultant maybe?

Buxbaum · 14/03/2018 10:40

It's incredibly cheeky and I don't blame you for being pissed off. Could it, however, be a way in for some contract work (depending on the field)? Agree that you will supply the presentation and invoice them for your daily rate?

Hoppinggreen · 14/03/2018 10:41

I was offered a job once as a Freelancer and when I turned up it was not as promised and the company were a bloody nightmare. Luckily I was only there to sort out a few details so wasn’t there long but when I got home I phoned and said that I didn’t feel it was going to work out.
The person who had hired me said to be honest he didn’t blame me as it was a very difficult working environment - but if I had the training I was due to deliver later that week ready he would really appreciate it as he didnt have time to prepare anything
I told him I would email it to him once I was in receipt of £500.
He declined
CF indeed OP

Penfold007 · 14/03/2018 10:54

I'd email the firm and confirm that they do not have your permission to use your presentation. Just in case they do have a copy.

ScattyCharly · 14/03/2018 11:03

What bastards!!

MrsMozart · 14/03/2018 11:32

Completely right to say no!

I've had similar. Due to what we do I'm usually willing to let them use it under a (paid for) licence.

Take from the experience the knowledge that you're good at what you do. Maybe you can utilise your skills in some consultant type way?

Chocywockydodahhhhhh · 14/03/2018 12:44

The job was doing disability awareness training of which I am very good and that’s what the presentation was around. Often thought of setting up freelance, do people think there would be a market

OP posts:
Bluelady · 14/03/2018 12:50

I reckon there would be a huge freelance market. Do your research, it could be pretty lucrative.

ChelleDawg2020 · 14/03/2018 12:50

I really think it would be better if company’s could just offer a job to an internal candidate.

Unfortunately in the interests of "fairness" companies tend not to do this. I've been on the other end where I was the internal candidate and my manager wanted to promote me, but the company policy dictated it had to be advertised. My manager deliberately wrote the advert so that I was the perfect candidate, and told me in advance he was going to pick me whatever the others did, but in order to be "fair" the company dictated he had to interview at least five people and for them to represent a broad spectrum of society.

A waste of everyone's time and the company's money.

DotCottonDotCom · 14/03/2018 12:51

OMG yes theres a market i am sure!

Hoppinggreen · 14/03/2018 13:07

I bet there would be choccy however, you would need to be confident enough and have the skills to market yourself, which isn’t easy
Not saying you haven’t already got these but I’ve seen Freelancers fail because they dont have the skills to get the clients
