Was I rude... Well yes I was, but was it deserved?

It’s a WIBU rather than AIBU: I know I was rude (the 3rd time), but was it deserved, let me explain.
Mobile rang this afternoon, asking for DW, said unfortunately unavailable and could I help? It was about her accident and they could help with the claim. (Haven’t had an accident and certainly no claim to be made). Explained not interested as hadn’t had accident etc, hung up and blocked number.

Phone rings 5 min later, apparently it was the man who I had been speaking too’s supervisor and I had been rude to his member of staff!! Told him to go listen to the recording and he might draw a different conclusion, and no I wasn’t interested in their services. Hung up and blocked this number.

Five minutes later, another supervisor. I’d had enough at this point and summoned Mumsnet and told him to fuck off to the far side of fuck and when he got there fuck off some more (my God, I love that phrase), but never used in anger until today. He tried to get a few more words in at this point but I just laughed and hung up.

So yes I was rude, but will the Mumsnet jury forgive me?

Oh and if you’re on here call centre bod, no matter what the result, I may remain unrepentant so until I tell you other wise, you can stay fucked off!

Oooh I love messing with cold callers! If I happen upon one when I visit my parents I tell the chump I'm the house keeper and they should try the numbers in Monaco and Biarritz, which of course I can't give out.

The last chump claimed to be calling from "your internet provider" without naming or being able to name said provider so it got pointed out to them that they weren't even a good scammer. They hung up before I really got going sadly!

My aunt also likes messing with the ones who want you to complete surveys. "I'm a 24 year old string theory phd student, I am a chess grand master and my other hobbies are knitting and waterskiing" says the 72 yo retired physio who does embroidery and watercolours

This is a nifty app which does a pretty good job of blocking spam calls ....

A couple years ago Mr Crow was "in a car accident that wasn't his fault". Sorting it out took 18 months - legal cover on the insurance was worth every penny - but part of the delay was the insurers never being able to phone as we kept assuming they were yet more scammers/hard sell companies.

Be warned if you ever use money supermarket or compare the meerkat etc - the number of tiny boxes you have to either tick or untick to avoid them selling your details is huge! Sorry, "passing your details to carefully-screened companies that may have special offers of interest to you".

Fontella · 14/03/2018 10:46

I work from home and have caller display so any calls from numbers I don't recognise I don't pick up. I am also able to quickly type the number into my computer and it immediately flags up any dodgy ones on sites like 'whocallsme' and so on.

However last week I got a call from what looked like a mobile number - so I picked up and I got the voice "this is your internet provider ...." .

So I replied "that's funny, I just got off the phone from speaking to my REAL internet provider" (by coincidence, I really had been speaking to BT moments earlier) and the phone just went straight down!

BothersomeCrow · 14/03/2018 10:50

My dad gets quite a lot of these despite the call blocker as my mum answers and at least tells them they need to speak to her husband. My dad is 78 but dead sharp and used to work on computers. He had one hang up on him after ~20 min once when I was there and said "Bother!" He'd been hoping to break his record of 33 minutes...

HunterHearstHelmsley · 14/03/2018 10:52

I whisper 'I know where you live' to cold callers. They don't tend to call back. Weird that.

TeatimeForTheSoul · 14/03/2018 10:56

Just had an international ‘internet provider’ one!! Was obtuse for a bit, so he told me 5he call was being recorded then he started repeatedly saying saying F YOU! Never had such a rude one.

Hello, City of London police, cyber fraud team. How may I help you ?

Onlyoldontheoutside · 14/03/2018 11:21

Mumsnet interrupted there by double glazing, very nice man who apologised and said he'd takee off the data base, again.
Since I've moved to this house with a new phone number I get repeated Indian calls thinking I'm a tattoo parlour.Different men at all times of day, some expecting a bit more by some of the things said.Last time it was a woman and I explained, with crocodile tears that this was a Children's home and these calls were distressing them if they answered.I haven't heard from them for 2 months now.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 14/03/2018 11:24

Absolute ROFL at calling you back because you were rude! What were they going to do about it?!

YWNBU OP. I used to politely engage but I just can’t be arsed anymore. I hang up without speaking.

Grumblepants · 14/03/2018 11:39

I get calls everyday so I'm entitled to be rude. One made me laugh..
Them- hi I'm calling to tell you that you may be entitled to a grant to replace your windows.
Me-my house is less than 2 years old, I am not entitled to get the windows replaced on a grant.
Them- oh ok well what about the doors in your house as the grant would cover them too.
Me-the doors are the same age as the rest of my house! Still less than 2 years old.
Them- ok what about any extensions or a conservatory as these would also fall under the grant entitlement.
Me- are you fucking stupid?

Mumminmum · 14/03/2018 12:30

Actually, I feel we have a duty to be rude to the cold callers as they earn their money scamming people and their job should be as nasty and unpleasant as possible.

GeminiRising · 14/03/2018 12:54

My best one was getting a call about installing a conservatory.

I lived in a first floor flat at the time.

Told them they were welcome to come and measure up if they wanted but they'd need some long ladders.

T2517 · 14/03/2018 13:30

Had one of the fake internet callers call me a very stupid woman over and over again because I told him what he was doing was immoral. I just say that I wasn’t in a car accident and if I was I wouldn’t want to be reminded about it out of the blue

ToadOfSadness · 14/03/2018 13:38

I moved into a rental and couldn't change the phone no. so set up an answering machine to repeatedly say 'Hello? hello?' until they hung up because I only used the hone for outgoing calls and any incoming ones were not for me.

In the end no-one phoned at all.

I used to also screen my incoming calls with a message requesting that they gave their name and phone no. and if I knew them I would answer.

These days the ringer is turned off, TPS doesn't work anyway, people doing surveys ignore it, along with the scammers. Prior to this I would take the receiver off and leave it on the side, forget about it and eventually return and have to clear the line to get a dial tone

My mobile rarely gets a nuisance call, number is permanently with held and requested no unsolicited calls, not sure if they actually do it but it has been that way for several years.

ToadOfSadness · 14/03/2018 13:39

Lost a p there, oops.

RedForFilth · 14/03/2018 13:40

I just say "no thank you and can you please take my number off your records?" My ex used to say I was really rude!

WinterRose92 · 14/03/2018 13:45

Well done!
I remember a few years back I was over at my Pop's, he has a wicked sense of humour. A cold caller rung him, he put the guy on speakerphone for us to hear. Pop pretended to be interested in whatever it was and then said 'Oh god, hang on a minute! My dog has got his bollocks stuck in the cat flap again! Hold on.' He then put the phone on the side told us to keep quiet and went back to watching the telly! My Mum, Dad, brother and me were all there wanting to burst with laughter!
The caller did hold on for a minute before he hung up! Brilliant! Love my Pop!

MissClareRemembers · 14/03/2018 13:47

I was once called three times by same cold call number. First time I just hung up, second they shouted at me not to hang up and third time he said he knew where I lived and would “come and fuck me”. I screamed “Fuck off perv!” down the phone and no more call backs.

I thought about trying to report but have no desire to engage with the twats.

YellowFlower201 · 14/03/2018 13:50

I got a cold call after a funeral once. I answered thinking it was the taxi we had called. I told the guy trying to sell me 'financial services' that it wasn't a good time and he quite aggressively asked me why I'd answered the phone then.

I was so upset I couldn't tell him and just hung up. Arsehole! I should have called him back to give him what for.

IAmBreakmasterCylinder · 14/03/2018 13:54

If anyone's interested, there are 2 brilliant episodes (2 parter) of the Podcast 'Reply All' about scam call centres - I won't give any spoilers but it is well worth a listen and parts of it are really funny.

The episodes are numbers 102 & 103 - Long Distance.

onemouseplace · 14/03/2018 13:58

I've been called back by a cold caller before telling me I was being rude for hanging up on them! I mean, what the actual?

I just cut them off now with a "Sorry, not interested" and have hung up while they are still mid sentence.

Bexter801 · 14/03/2018 14:04

You were rude, you should phone back and say you didn't mean the last fuck! I can totally relate, these calls have made me want to Chuck my phone out the window....but last time out of pure anger,I kept them talking for ages, when and where was my supposed accident, that bad I can't even remember,etc....

alwaysthepessimist · 14/03/2018 14:05

was the number 02064400364? It keeps ringing my mobile but it isn't anyone I know - I am going to report it on the ICO website - if enough people complain the company can get fined for nuisance calls
