There is so much uncertainty surrounding what will happen with trade deals and goodness knows what else, that I’m starting to wonder about making some sensible plans.

We have put a stop to some planned works we wanted to do to our house, we have downsized to one car and we grow a small amount of veg. We keep some stocks of food in the house but we have a large family so I never feel like we’d have enough.
We have discussed not taking a holiday this summer and DH is taking every training course possible at work in order to diversify his skills should his industry go tits up.

I’m wondering what decisions you’re making in your homes for what could possibly be a really uncertain time for a few years.

We gave up on our plan to buy a bigger house as soon as the result came through. We are hunkering down morrgage free rather than getting another £350k of mortgage. Didn't seem a good bet. Prices in our area skyrocketing and large detached in short supply so think we missed our chance. £700k was about the most i was willing to pay and now same house will cost more. I am put out but count myself lucky. Even if both our jobs go we should be ok.

Have binned my plan of a bucketlist trip for big birthday this year. Thought i'd dial down the spending. I have got 2 European holidays planned this year but think might avoid Europe next year.

I bought a new car now (in lieu of the holiday) brexit likely to affect prices but cant say that was major reason for my choice.

Ive stopped many other luxury / non essential purchases. In particular we are dropping going out to eat/coffee so much. Trying to save more.

I hope to God nothing that is forecast by experts happens

There are other experts that have been presenting a contrary prognosis to doom & gloom btw.

MillyChantilly · 13/03/2018 20:55

Very few.

snash12 · 13/03/2018 20:55

I sometimes wonder what remainers think would happen in turmoil if we were to stay? Remember 2008? We were bailing other countries out. Greece? They were part of the EU when they practically went bankrupt.

EU is awesome for some but UK can survive without it.

Well done to all the UK citizens cashing in pensions, delaying building works or moving money overseas, you’ve already started the economic downturn you can later blame on Brexit.

Really looking forward to Brexit cheers wine

Keep on drinking so. Alcohol is great at distorting reality.Wink

Graphista · 13/03/2018 21:00

But snash brexit IS to blame because they wouldn't be DOING that if brexit wasn't happening.

Those saying we'll be fine food wise - check your weekly shop and find the products made in Britain with NO imported ingredients.

I've done a fair Google on that and the only products I can find are premium brands I've never heard of and likely couldn't afford!

Snowmagedon · 13/03/2018 21:02

I think it's pragmatic to look to how one can produce ones own butter, stuff like that. I know I made some as a child.

It will be good to be a more self sufficient nation again. Give capital to basic skills. Make our economy one for everyone again.

I think our children and grandchildren will get the benefit, my generation is lost sadly anyway due to 2008 credit crunch and all the unfortunate extras that piled on at that time.
Our economy needs a shake up.

LoveInTokyo · 13/03/2018 21:03

“Well done to all the UK citizens cashing in pensions, delaying building works or moving money overseas, you’ve already started the economic downturn you can later blame on Brexit.”

Oh, wind your neck in.

I did everything I could to campaign against Brexit, but as soon as the result came in I knew I couldn’t ask my partner to move to the UK in the circumstances and I wanted to get French citizenship as soon as possible, so I started working on a plan to move to France. Moving my money out of the UK is the normal, sensible thing to do. We’ve got a wedding to pay for and hopefully an apartment to buy - in euros. I’m not taking the risk of leaving my money in the UK and having it become worthless just when I need it.

I have taken steps to protect myself against Brexit. When the UK economy tanks, it is not the fault of a few people like me buying euros, it’s the fault of the lying politicians who sold people the Brexit dream and the gullible chumps who voted for it.

Don’t try to put this on me.

Preparing the celebrations

lakeshoreliving · 13/03/2018 21:06

snash Brexit is solely responsible for my family moving overseas and paying our tax overseas. We had no plans live overseas again until Brexit. Our very small contribution to the reduction of UK finances has only happened because of Brexit.

Working on the Brexiteers assumption that you are at the gateway to the sunny uplands I am sure my family can return in a few years to enjoy the Brexit boom that should be happening by then. 😉

theftbyfinding · 13/03/2018 21:08

gullible chumps And you're telling others to wind their neck in? Lack of self awareness right there.

MillyChantilly · 13/03/2018 21:09

Make our economy one for everyone again.

People believe this?.

Make our economy one for the already wealthy disaster capitalists like Mogg and other Tories who want to turn the UK into a low wage and low regulation economy.

LoveInTokyo · 13/03/2018 21:10

Gullible chumps was the least offensive description I could come up with, so you got off lightly really.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 13/03/2018 21:11

turn the UK into a low wage

Turn it into? How can they do that when Labour achieved it already circa 2005?

LoveInTokyo · 13/03/2018 21:13

Labour have been out of power for nearly a decade, hon.

PussCatTheGoldfish · 13/03/2018 21:15

I will make any big necessary purchases this year (new washing machine, new dryer etc). I'll also get any car repairs/tyres done early next year. Imported goods likely to rise £ short term and those are things we need.

applesareredandgreen · 13/03/2018 21:15

Hadn't even considered it. I have enough worries to keep me going with my normal day to day life that I know about already ....

MillyChantilly · 13/03/2018 21:17

Turn it into? How can they do that when Labour achieved it already circa 2005?

Watch it get worse for mr and mrs ordinary. Watch it get better for Mogg and co.

CadyHeron · 13/03/2018 21:17

I think it's pragmatic to look to how one can produce ones own butter, stuff like that. I know I made some as a child.

One needs to make like Felicity Kendall and go all Good Life otherwise all the food in the UK will disappear after three days of Brexit kicking in or not
Get some chickens, so one is sorted for eggs too.
Grow one's own tomatoes too.
I see some are stockpiling olive oil too,one had get onto that too.
Honestly, this thread is BONKERS.

theftbyfinding · 13/03/2018 21:18

LoveinTokyo I guess you're right. You could have said something like this swivelled eyed loon did today. How to win friends haha www.express.co.uk/news/politics/930985/brexit-news-alyn-smith-eu-european-parliament-video

Sheasksmehowthecatsbeen · 13/03/2018 21:21

I have REPEATEDLY said that food stocks running low within days was in the event of a No Deal Brexit. Why do you keep pushing the line that it is hysterical? A No Deal Brexit will lead to all sorts of horrible problems. It is not hysterical to state this. You obviously didn't read all the reports I posted either. Sorry, did they contain facts?

Oblomov18 · 13/03/2018 21:21

Please could someone explain why so many posters have applied for an Irish passport?
what is the benefit?

falang · 13/03/2018 21:21

I agree Cadyheron. Bonkers and unintentionally funny.

TalkinPeace · 13/03/2018 21:23

Once we are out of the EU we will be able to abolish tariffs with the WTO and the price of food and drink will fall.
Could somebody explain the maths of that one ?

MillyChantilly · 13/03/2018 21:23

Sheasksmehowthecatsbeen you're dealing with people who get their Brexit news from the Express. They're probably more interested in how Brexit will affect Princess Diana.
