....my DH thinks it will be disruptive and I will be distracted with it rather than focussing on them.....BUT it has taken months of planning and now ready to go but kids will be off during Easter and study leave......should I postpone until July?

Not extending - replacing like for like - but need to chase a wall to move position of electrics for oven, cut a new doorway (masonry) and dig a channel for water waste. I was thinking if I could get these noisy/dusty bits done before school holidays - then they would only have the noise of fitting the floating wood floor and installing the cabinets (carcasses already assembled)

Thoughts.....?

Btw - I would imediately discount the views of anyone who hasn't had a complete new kitchen fitted.

It's not just the noise and the dust but the fact that you don't have access to proper cooking and washing up facilities. We spent 3 weeks with just a kettle and a microwave in the dining room and doing the washing up in the bath. However, it was just DH and I so we ended up eating out quite a bit and having takeaways.

Also we had our utility done at the same time so we had no washing machine and had to make trips to the launderette.

No way. Wait. It be cruel not too or do it in a week but send them to grandparents.

UpSideDownBrain · 13/03/2018 13:30

You should wait. No brainer!

PonderLand · 13/03/2018 13:30

I would wait but we had a completely new kitchen done. We had the old fridge and freezer and table in the living room, had to move all the furniture from the living room upstairs so nowhere to relax, the noise was crazy when they were ripping it out, the dust lasted weeks and was everywhere so I had to clean up all the time. Also electricians drilling for 2 days and having to go upstairs and move carpets and furniture etc. You think it's all going to be contained in one room but it isn't.

I think it would be too much for you all, and the chances are it will last longer than you expect it to!

The washing up in the bathroom was a particularly loathesome task. Having to take everything upstairs to wash. We were really lucky having two good sized bathrooms but it was still a pain.

Far too disruptive...

We only had boiler replaced (essential) and most of the kitchen was emptied out...

So ever room had boxes in them... People in and out....

They’ll be done by June, I’d wait until then. There’s enough stress at exam time and not being able to nip into the kitchen in study leave for a snack might seem a small thing but to someone who’s been studying it would be more than nothing.

SluttyButty · 13/03/2018 13:41

Btw I’ve had two kitchen refits in my life and it was beyond awful. We need to do this one but we are putting off any major stuff because dd is revising for A levels and has uni pressure as well. The house and garden can stay as it is for now.

LaurieMarlow · 13/03/2018 13:53

I really wouldn't. It's not fair on them.

TheMadGardener · 13/03/2018 13:58

The summer I did A levels and my sister O levels (many years ago), the electrics in my grandparents house where we lived all failed spectacularly and dangerously and the whole house had to be rewired while we were revising. We were revising by candlelight and torchlight quite a bit as I recall. I don't think it had much of an impact on our results though!

gillybeanz · 13/03/2018 14:01

Go ahead with it and if dh thinks you won't be focussing on them, he can always help them Confused
I know this is about the kitchen but wtf does your dh get off.

It's the kids that are revising and should be putting in the work, as long as they have somewhere to study, that's all they should need.
If it does get too noisy they could go to the library.

deno · 13/03/2018 15:02

I would wait. Mine got very annoyed about any little noise when they were revising - having workmen tramping in and out of the kitchen, drilling and making lots of noise would have been the last straw.
