Royals being put to sleep to give birth? *MNHQ edited the title for some sort of clarity*

Posting in here for traffic, and also in case my lack of experience is at play here.

I have just been advised that when the royal family are due to deliver their babies they are put to sleep and someone else does the "work" for them because it is deemed too traumatic an experience.

Note, apparently this isn't a long winded and not really accurate attempt at saying they have caesarians.

I have scoffed at this, but an being told that this truly is the case. AIBU to not see how this is physically possible? And why on earth something like giving birth is deemed below the royals if so?

In the crown you see the queen having a twilight birth.

cucaracha · 13/03/2018 12:54

huh?

Why do they bother with pregnancy then? They could just use a surrogate.

"Anaesthesia during childbirth became more popular in the 1850s, after Queen Victoria used ether during labour.

In those days, anaesthesia meant using whatever drug would bring unconsciousness, and the dose was however much it took to achieve it."

I'm so glad I didn't grow up in the 1800's. 🤣

pawpatrolearworm · 13/03/2018 13:01

I don't see a problem My last birth was horrific enough to give me panic attacks years later, and left me permanently damaged. If I could have slept through it instead you could have given me crack cocaine and a mallet to the face for all I care.

It doesn't happen any more though anyway.

Shadow666 · 13/03/2018 13:02

I’m pretty sure Catherine didn’t have a C section. The women I know who had C sections seemed to be in pain longer after the birth. She seemed pretty relaxed when she left hospital.

Note: I’m not a medical professional so this might be bullshit. But she did look great right after giving birth.

Butterandsugar · 13/03/2018 13:02

Thanks everyone! I thought it was absolute nonsense but based on some of the replies it sounds like she has some basis in terms of twilight labour and old Queen Victoria loving a bit of chloroform.

Not sure if this is from The Crown - I'll ask her after lunch!

Certainly used to happen as others have said, but I would guess it’s probably not done now.

specialsubject · 13/03/2018 13:05

I thought this was about the mercy killing of George V.

tell your dippydrawers mate a) not to believe tv dramas and b) that horrific suffering in childbirth isn't compulsory.

cucaracha · 13/03/2018 13:06

I doubt the hospital would have released Kate so early after a c-section, but The women I know who had C sections seemed to be in pain longer after the birth. the pain only starts when the anesthetic wears off, so it's much less painful in the few hours immediately after.

fruitbrewhaha · 13/03/2018 13:08

I thought this was going to be about the airline.

Knittedfairies · 13/03/2018 13:09

Me too twer!

NetballHoop · 13/03/2018 13:10

This is obviously rubbish. David Icke told us years ago thet they are all alien lizards who lay eggs rather than give birth.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 13/03/2018 13:11

I thought OP had only just noticed the airline had gone bust!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 13/03/2018 13:13

Being Put To Sleep is generally used as a term for euthanasia or mercy killing so I can understand the confusion.

Being knocked out with chloroform for childbirth was perhaps used by royals in Victorian times. Medical care was basic and many women (including royalty) and children died during childbirth. Not sure why your colleague is inferring that this happens nowadays Confused

Princess Diana gave birth standing up for example. She definitely wasn't asleep.

Topseyt · 13/03/2018 13:16

Your manager is talking bollocks.

Queen Victoria was into this sort of shit, but then by many accounts she resented pregnancy and childbirth, and was not exactly highly maternal despite having 9 children.

The current set of royals have the same options as the rest of us, although with the added advantage of being able to pay for the best privately. The options are the same though as far as I can see.

Orlandsundry · 13/03/2018 13:16

DIdn't something similar happen in MadMen when Betty Draper had her baby. All looked very trippy from what I recall!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 13/03/2018 13:18

I thought this was going to be about the airline
Or a mercy killing of our dear queen.
This could possibly be the most misleading thread title ever. Grin

MIngerDynasty · 13/03/2018 13:18

I thought this was about butterflies too...

MargaretCavendish · 13/03/2018 13:18

Also thought this was going to be about euthanising the queen - as someone who thinks they probably should have a retirement age (if they must exist at all) I thought it was a bit extreme!

The papers reported at the time that Kate Middleton had a vaginal birth without an epidural. I remember because I thought 'how the fuck would they know and why does anyone care?'.

For a mad moment I thought someone was posting that they'd heard the queen was going to be 'put to sleep' so Charles could take over. Confused

pigsDOfly · 13/03/2018 13:22

Ah see others thought the same.:)

bigKiteFlying · 13/03/2018 13:33

I thought this was about the mercy killing of George V.

^^ I thought this.

Still I now know about twilight birth - something I'd never heard of before.

Butterandsugar · 13/03/2018 13:33

Good shout about the title - I've asked for it to be updated
