To think this is v.expensive (ironing)?

I've recently broken my wrist & fallen behind on household chores as a result. My ironing pile is immense!! DM offered to take some to do but she's been a great help with DC & everything else so I don't want to put anything else on her.

A friend mentioned a lady had set up an ironing service in our area & had a Facebook page. I've just had a look at the page & she charges 70p per item, some items are more, pillowcases 90p each, duvet covers £3.50!!

I don't really know how much I expected it to be as I've never used anything similar before but that seems an awful lot to me. I was working it out & based on our washing for one day that would about £10 so a weeks worth £70, £90 if I was to send bedding, surely nobody pays that??

It'll be getting folded and put away as it is!!

That's ridiculous, why don't they charge by the hour?

greenbeansqueen · 12/03/2018 18:06

That’s not too expensive give it’s her time. Lots of clothes are wash and wear these days so what do you really need ironed?

Marmite27 · 12/03/2018 18:07

Surely a pillow case should be cheaper? They’re the easiest thing to iron, they’re just a square of fabric Hmm

greenbeansqueen · 12/03/2018 18:08

The answer is of course, if you don’t want to pay for the service then don’t use it! Any of your DC old enough to help out?

scurryfunge · 12/03/2018 18:10

My BIL has just advertised an ironing service with similar prices and has so far had zero requests. He is deluded in thinking that people will pay that sort of amount. Just limit your ironing altogether as you said. Nobody died as a result of an unironed duvet cover. Hope your wrist is getting better.

XiCi · 12/03/2018 18:10

I find it hilarious that anyone would waste time ironing pillow cases and duvet covers.

I would keep looking. All the ironing services I've seen charge per hour or per bag full of clothes.

PinkHeart5914 · 12/03/2018 18:10

70p an item is a bargin imo! If you can’t make some profit from it why would anyone want to do it?

I don’t know anyone that irons bedding though I mean seriously why bother

Do you iron every single item of clothing? If so why? Only things that are ironed in this house are shirts which dh does himself

AthenaAshton · 12/03/2018 18:11

Ha! I am going to take in ironing to supplement my income after all (as often recommended on MN).

frasier · 12/03/2018 18:12

Yes, my cleaner does an hours ironing at the end of her cleaning and charges the same rate - £13 an hour.

ScreamingValenta · 12/03/2018 18:13

Just iron (or pay for someone else to iron) the absolute essentials until you're better. I hate ironing and never iron bedlinen - if you put it on the bed first thing after you get up, the creases will be barely visible by night time.

frasier · 12/03/2018 18:14

Marmite27 Napkins are easier!

myusernamewastakenbyme · 12/03/2018 18:15

I only iron my dd school uniform and my work uniform...if you shake things out properly and hang up you can get away with hardly ironing at all.

bookgirl1982 · 12/03/2018 18:16

Our ironing lady charges 75p for shirts but 50p for everything else.

MereDintofPandiculation · 12/03/2018 18:17

Surely a pillow case should be cheaper? They’re the easiest thing to iron, they’re just a square of fabric No they're not, they're a length of fabric folded 3 times (two sides and the pocket that stops the pillow falling out), and to do a good job you need to iron all three. And they're too big for an ordinary ironing board. Even minimum wage works out at 12p a minute, so 90p for a pillowcase doesn't look too exorbitant.

A duvet cover would be a right pain to iron, lots of rearranging on the board, and you'll be expecting a really good finish if you're paying for it. If I were thinking of taking in ironing I'd charge £20 for a duvet cover just to ensure I never had to do one!

falsepriest · 12/03/2018 18:18

Is that normal? I'd have thought it's a per-hour kinda thing? Never considered it before tbh.

Floralnomad · 12/03/2018 18:19

Our ironing lady charges per item , minimum order has to be £10 and she collects one day and returns it the next , we provide hangars if needed and she provides plastic covers for hanging items . Most items are 70p , shirts and duvet covers / double /king sized sheets are more expensive , I’m not sure exactly how much because whatever it is it’s worth it IMO . It never seems that expensive and costs us betweeen £12-15 most weeks .

mumgointhroughtorture · 12/03/2018 18:22

Most places I've heard of charge by the basket with so many items in it , and more items in the basket if children's items .

viccat · 12/03/2018 18:22

It's probably considered a bit of a luxury though, isn't it? I can't remember the last time I ironed anything - surely you only really need to iron shirts, some skirts etc.? Bedding? Never.

42andcounting · 12/03/2018 18:22

Our local ironing fairy charges £13 per hour, and last time she did stuff for me she did 37 items of adult clothing in that hour. It was a pre Christmas treat to myself to not have to look at a full ironing basket any more Grin

TellerTuesday4EVA · 12/03/2018 19:41

Ah interesting, quite a mixed result, I'm surprised actually at those that think it's reasonable.

As luck would have it NDN has just said she wants some extra cash for her holiday so she's offered to do it until I'm back to normal - £10 for a blue IKEA bag full which I think is a lot more reasonable. I can handle that!

ginghamstarfish · 12/03/2018 19:46

Can't understand why anyone irons bedding - and if you did iron sheets and duvet covers, then they would of necessity be trailing on the floor ... yuk. Prefer clean and non-ironed!

Lucyccfc · 12/03/2018 19:50

My ironing is collected on a Monday and brought back on Wednesday - all on hangers covered in polythene clothes bags. I give the bags back the next week when she collects.

It's £10 for 30 items.

oblada · 12/03/2018 19:53

Why do you need so much to be ironed? It seems reasonable enough to me too. Used to take ironing to be done once a fortnight and spent about 15-20quids each time. Would only take work shirts and work trousers tho in the main. Kids clothes don't need it and bedding certainly not!

gussyfinknottle · 12/03/2018 19:53

Love ironing. Used to do it for beer at uni. My dgm took in washing as they used to say.
Let me introduce you to the concept of Not Ironing. Anything but, say, work shirts. Or anything that needs a bit of tlc.

TellerTuesday4EVA · 12/03/2018 20:44

See i would happily pay that @Lucyccfc, in fact that's likely what it work out paying my neighbour. If I was to use said Facebook page 30 items would be £21 which seems extreme.

I knew people would say don't iron but I think it's just what you get used to, DM & DGran always ironed so I think I just followed suit & it would be a big difference to go from so much to none, think I'll wean myself slowly maybe.
