I know, I know - you're sick of trans threads. But please take 1 minute to read this because it's not about trans, it's about women's right to free speech.

In the last few days, a woman has been physically attacked by a mob of 20-30 people and had to be rescued by the police - link. Her 'crime'? She had attended a meeting held by Women's Place UK about the Gender Reform Act. These meetings are moderate and respectful - they have trans women speakers as well as biological women. Purely because she attended this meeting, the woman, who happened to be a trades unionist, was stalked, followed to a picket line days later, surrounded and violently attacked.

Also this week, a woman who expressed gender critical views on Twitter was questioned under caution by the police and told she cannot leave the country link

AIBU to think this is terrifying? Whatever our beliefs about the trans movements - even if we support self-ID - don't we all support the right to peaceful debate and freedom of expression? This isn't happening to men - male journalists and men on social media who express gender critical views aren't being stalked and attacked. This is a concerted effort to silence women. I am genuinely scared.

UpstartCrow third wave feminists have strayed far from the original feminist movement of equal rights for women. They have instead been pushing for fluidity of gender and emasculation of men. This is following the agenda of the marxist left who want total control of society. This YouTube video expands on this

Another one who finds this utterly terrifying.

I think Somerford makes a very important point about free speech and I agree that we all need to be honest at our own contributions in 'silencing' others who we don't agree with. Brexit was an example - the hatred and vitriol on both sides and the ageism and classism and pure contempt after the result has been exceptionally divisive Sad
We have to start listening to and engaging with those whose views we don't agree with and defending someone's rights to voice their opinion. If we lose the right to free speech - which sadly many on the left and transactivists are actively promoting - then we lose one of our core values.

I don't dare speak on threads like this. Last time I did I got bullied.

I completely agree. Even if your opinion is controversial, you should be given the chance to voice it and back it up.

I wish someone like Jon Ronson would get hold of all this. Someone who gets nuance and who likes investigating lots of different strands to an issue.

Belleende · 12/03/2018 23:05

Signed. Agreed this needs some intelligent journalism behind it to unpick the issues. There have been so many eloquent posts on here. MN seems to be the only place where this debate is live. It has really helped to shape my own thinking on this. I was planning on adding something cogent to the debate, and then I clicked on the Danielle link and I think what is missing is pointing out the bleeding obvious. He is a man, in men's clothing, with a man beard, and man genitals, with the added experience of having lived his life as a man. HE IS A MAN. There I said it.

It's frustrating that I don't feel able to share this with anyone in RL.

Maria MacLachlan (the woman who was beaten up by transactivists at Speaker's Corner) has written an article on the meetings on the Gender Recognition Act and all the attempts to prevent women from discussing it:

www.peaktrans.org/trying-to-stop-us-meeting/

The police action is particularly sinister though, especially that they say they are using it as a 'test case' - www.theposieparker.com/news - which, if successful, they will presumably use to hound and silence other women across the country for simply stating an opinion - without any threat of violence - while of course continuing to do absolutely nothing about the rape and death threats women routinely receive online.

Because of course threatening and abusing women because of their sex isn't classed as a hate crime. Because women simply don't matter.

BoreOfWhabylon · 16/03/2018 11:13

Thanks so much for that link @BloodyFreezing. It deserves to be shared more widely.

I will be returning to it to view the videos of the speakers at the meetings.

Does anyone know Louie. He could do a big 'Inside a TRA'. Lots of silent shots to camera the day WTAF!

Italiangreyhound · 16/03/2018 16:17

I mean Louis Theroux. Lots of silent shots to camera 'that say' WTAF!
