to think a toaster should toast all the slice of bread - not 75% !

I bought a cheap toaster from Currys last year ... like £3.98 cheap!
Unfortunately it doesn't toast all the slice of bread (from a standard loaf) ... it does about 75%.
A lot of the cheap toasters seem to have the same problem.
Where can I get a cheap toaster that will toast all the slice of bread?

you can't. That's why they are cheap. You can turn it to low, and turn the bread over to toast it a second time so each end is half-toasted. Or you can cough up for a more expensive one that's big enough for your bread.

Johnb0y · 10/03/2018 17:29

Thanks for that... Most helpful.. Not.

The best way to do it is to lay the bread sideways in a long slot 4-slice toaster. I had one from Argos but it was about £20.

MabantoMoonface · 10/03/2018 17:34

I use one of these. Toasts perfectly everytime, and just about in your budget

like this one

Moonandstars84 · 10/03/2018 17:38

I gave same problem and it wasn't even that cheap. Asda 4 slice one. The odd slice fits but generally I flip it half way.

Buxtonstill · 10/03/2018 17:39

Are you putting it in the toaster correctly? My DH always used to put it in with the top edge of the slice uppermost, and have to turn it. I always put it in the toaster with the side edge down. He got to 45 yo before knowing that!

We got a £35 Morphy Richards Accents toaster after having the same issue! I went to the shops with a piece of paper cut to the size of a piece of bread. This toasts perfectly!

Dodie66 · 10/03/2018 17:44

I did the same. I bought a toaster and the bread wouldn’t fit so took it back and took a piece of card cut to the size of the bread and bought a Morphy Richards one. The shop assistant said it depends on what brand of bread you use too. I use Warburtons or hovis, apparently the slices are taller.

mirime · 10/03/2018 17:50

Even if your whole slice of bread fits in the damn thing won't toast evenly on both sides. Only way to get decent toast is to use the grill, but then you have to stand and watch it.

BarbaraofSevillle · 10/03/2018 18:20

Even if you buy the Warburton's approved toaster, it doesn't toast all the bread, there's still a bit sticking out and it toasts very unevenly one side to the other. I wish I'd taken it back really, because it's shit.

pastabest · 10/03/2018 18:24

Surely the slice of bread is supposed to go on it's side!?

Of course it won't fit if people people are putting it in with the crust sticking out of the top?

Pindlesandneedles · 10/03/2018 18:26

YANBU this really annoys me too! Our toaster isn’t even that cheap and it doesn’t toast the whole slice. Especially if we get a ‘fancy’ loaf, I have to cut the bread in half before putting it in! Love the idea of taking a slice sized piece of paper when toaster shopping. I shall do this next time!!

Shiningbrightly1 · 10/03/2018 18:26

£25 asda 4 slice toaster comes in various colours and I compared it in the shop to expensive extra deep toasters and it was the same. I've had years of cheap 2 slice toasters with the same problem as you OP and I was prepared to spend big bucks for my new 4 slice but no need £25 and literally all bread including extra thick white bread fits in sideways down and toasts perfectly. Also fits big crumpets and hot cross buns etc. Get one! Asda own brand.

Johnb0y · 10/03/2018 20:38

Am I putting the bread in the wrong way round? Do I sound like a complete idiot ... (don't answer that) ... The bread only fits in one way.
PS I should have said that I only want a two slice toaster as space is tight.

If your are putting the bread in crust up then yabu. As pp have said the bread should be side up with the crust facing forwards.

kaytee87 · 10/03/2018 20:43

Turn the bread over half way through

throwcushions · 10/03/2018 20:44

Oh sorry I didn't see your update. We have a £20 Morphy Richards one from Amazon and it's fine.

Dodie66 · 10/03/2018 21:08

My toaster is not wide enough to ou the bread in sideways

safariboot · 10/03/2018 21:11

Another who always put the bread in top-up Blush. But also another not even sure if it'll fit sideways.

Takfujuimoto · 10/03/2018 21:39

I've found it doesn't matter how cheap or expensive a toaster is there is always a little white edge around the toasted middle.

Best way is to put bread in sideways down on low and turn then toast again, or use the grill but it gets burnt easily like that.

The children's 50/50 crustless is the best for even toasting.

Takfujuimoto · 10/03/2018 21:40

We used to toast bread by the electric fire as kids, did a better job than all the above!

mumonashoestring · 10/03/2018 21:42

We had a proper cheapo from Sainsbury basics range for ages - it either incinerated or undercooked everything if left to its own devices. We replaced it last week with a 4 slot £25 toaster from Wilko which toasts everything edge to edge and absolutely perfectly. Worth. Every. Penny.

pastabest · 11/03/2018 08:20

The thing with putting it in sideways is that the sides of the toaster kind of squish and hold it in place even if it is slightly too big. Putting it in upright will always mean there's a bit sticking out of the top.

agentdaisy · 11/03/2018 13:08

Most toasters seem to be made for nimble bread which is about 2 inches shorter and narrower than normal bread. I don't even try to toast Warburtons bread anymore.

I've always put bread in on its side but when I broke the best toaster ever that isn't made anymore I found that most toasters, especially 2 slice ones, would only just fit a slice of bread in if it was stood up as opposed to on its side.

I've got a breville 4 slice one that I got from Morrisons for £15 a couple of years ago. Warburtons bread doesn't fit but hovis/Kingsmill/own brand fits if it's put in sideways.

I did as pp did and took a paper cutout of the bread we usually buy to try it in the toaster (just remember to mark the top on the cutout). I couldn't find one that fit Warburtons in though, even the 'Warburtons approved' ones.
