Is a torsion in Fallopian tube urgent?

WhoUpsetTheEquilibrium · 10/03/2018 09:02

Because I think I have that.

In September after a medical management MC I had a D&C for retained products. I also had a large cyst on my left ovary and I asked her to remove it since I was going under anaesthetic because it was causing me pain.
She was reluctant but when she went in the weight of the cyst was causing my Fallopian tube to twist round and round and that was the source of my pain. She popped the cyst and happy days.

Fast forward to now and I’ve had another scan that shows a uterine polyp and another cyst on the same ovary. The consultant (same one) suggested leaving it 8 weeks to see what the cyst does. Grow more of go away.

That was 6 weeks ago, two cycles ago.

I now have that very familiar pain that I had before and it’s worse every day.

I have the repeat scan on Tuesday but don’t have the follow up appointment until April.

How urgent is all this?

Can I still wait until Tuesday for the scan? I’m worried about getting to the point of not being able to function if the pain gets worse and worse.

How worrying is a torsion Fallopian tube?

FWIW the scan won’t show the twist. It will however probably show that the cyst has grown.

I also feel really sick.

Can you phone/write to the consultant and tell her your concerns?

endofthelinefinally · 10/03/2018 09:12

You need medical advice now.
If it is a torsion you could lose the ovary.
Call 111 or OOH.
Be prepared to go to A&E.

TheVanguardSix · 10/03/2018 09:13

Yes! It is.

MissEliza · 10/03/2018 09:13

It depends on the size of the cyst itself. Obviously the bigger it is, the more likely it is to rupture. When I had one I think I was told if it's under a diameter of 5cm, the doctors aren't concerned.

Speedy85 · 10/03/2018 09:14

If it is a twist it’s urgent. I had a big cyst and they gave me an emergency number to call if it twisted.

However, they told me if it twisted it would be unimaginably painful like the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. Does yours feel like that?

I’d suggest calling 111 to start with if you’re not sure.

WhoUpsetTheEquilibrium · 10/03/2018 09:16

Yes. I just wondered if it was more urgent than that. The pain is akin to appendicitis.

And I know it can cut off the blood supply to the ovary. I don’t want more kids but I also don’t want to die of sepisi either.

I wondered if there was that risk, or I’m over worrying.

I was put straight on the theatre list when this happened to me. Definitely medical advice.

WhoUpsetTheEquilibrium · 10/03/2018 09:17

Speedy my first twisted ovary wasn’t ‘unimaginable pain’ it was just ‘quite unpleasant’.

However, this is the same pain but worse.

I’m on 111 hold now.

My mum seems to think I need to go to A&E right now.

OP posts:
WhoUpsetTheEquilibrium · 10/03/2018 09:18

MissEliza it’s bigger than that. But again it’s not the size that’s the issue per se. Rather what it’s causing the Fallopian tube to do.

OP posts:
InglouriousBasterd · 10/03/2018 09:18

Just seen your post - A&E for pain like that. You're looking at necrotic tissue if the ovary dies; a pelvis full of fluid that can lead to infection.

Speedy85 · 10/03/2018 09:19

I’d go to A&E if you’ve had it before and it feels the same but worse.

Saisong · 10/03/2018 09:20

Yes!! Absolutely!!

My twisted tube had swollen to the size of an orange and was on the point of rupture by the time they removed it. It could have been critical and I needed immediate surgery.

Speedy85 · 10/03/2018 09:20

Or if you have an emergency number for the gynaecology department that would be best. But if not, skip 111 and just go to A&E.

WhoUpsetTheEquilibrium · 10/03/2018 09:20

Fuck sake.

This is such a pain in the arse. I asked the consultant about removing the bastard thing but she said it wasn’t that simple. She didn’t expand on that.

Speedy85 · 10/03/2018 09:22

I hope you feel better soon OP, but get it checked out ASAP Flowers

Saisong · 10/03/2018 09:23

The pain was utter agony at the time, until I got the lovely morphine. I was in hospital for 5 days and couldn't stand up straight for a week after that!
Please get immediate help.

endofthelinefinally · 10/03/2018 09:24

If your mum is there and thinks you need A&E you should go.
We can't see you.

Fortybingowings · 10/03/2018 09:24

A&E - could be ovarian torsion or an ectopic

WhoUpsetTheEquilibrium · 10/03/2018 09:38

Definitely not ectopic pregnancy.

Doctor calling back within 2 hours but I think I’ve already accepted the fact that it’s an A&E job.

OP posts:
anotherusername12 · 10/03/2018 09:45

Yes you really need to get it looked at. It's a huge risk factor for ectopic pregnancy which can be very dangerous and painful

CountryGirl1985 · 10/03/2018 09:48

ED. A twist is likely to compromise blood supply and should be considered a medical emergency until proven otherwise. Sorry 🤗

vitaminC · 10/03/2018 09:51

Yes. You need to go to A&E now. Tell them you've previously had a twisted tube and are currently experiencing the same pain, but worse!
A scan may not show the twist, but the position of the ovary is a good indicator.

mirime · 10/03/2018 09:58

A&E straight away. I went in twice with this a few years ago but it resolved itself so didn't need emergency surgery, eventually after many months of milder pain I had the ovary removed.

It is potentially an emergency situation so you should go. If it resolves itself again ask your GP if you can go straight to gynaecology rather than A&E if it happens again, I was told I could do that.
