Not to want to have to go into the pool with DD2 at a swimming party

Invite says "parent must accompany their child into the pool."

I don't want to go fucking swimming.

DD2 is 6 and swims like a fish.

half of my kids friends parent to to the same gym as us. So most of them have seen me sweating on the treatmill with a face as red as a baboon's arse, or elephantine in the pool. So I'm all out of shame! me on the treadmill.

I did a 7 mile cycle ride today with the kids and was very proud of myself. All those years as a student paid off!

JoanCrawford · 06/05/2007 19:21

Oh my god, this would be my worst nightmare. Haven't read whole tread but just seen 'parent must accompany their child into the pool' and froze on the spot.

Is this the mothers idea of a joke? Is she like something out of Baywatch?

I would rather book a holiday at the same time, by means of getting out of it, than have to endure the utter humiliation of other parents marvelling at my considerable cellulite.

nappyaddict · 06/05/2007 19:36

ours is 1 adult to every 2 under 8s.

scrapper · 06/05/2007 22:24

Oh dear, I would hate this.
Swimming pools can be so grim anyway, they always smell funny and have unmentionables floating near the bottom.

Would much prefer the sea, at least then there's the chance of a random shark attack to liven things up.

MrsSchadenfreude · 06/05/2007 22:27

Umm..the mother whose child had the party didn't go into the pool herself (and was the subject of some sour comments in the changing room). I think it is the idea of being semi naked with people you know vaguely. DH refused to go as he didn't want people to see his body art - he doesn't mind swimming with a bunch of strangers, but didn't want to be the focus of gossip at the school gate!

But did your dc enjoy it

I had one of these parties when dd was younger, and I didn't get in either as I had to organise the food table while the swimming was going on

nappyaddict · 06/05/2007 22:52

if i was having this sort of party i would ask around to see if anyone would be willing to volunteer and then invite only the amount of children that i had enough volunteers for. wouldn't expect parents to go in the pool.

unknownrebelbang · 06/05/2007 23:01

I organised a swimming party for one of my boys at some point (think he was 7). I didn't go in either, but DH did, and we asked for volunteers and got enough, mostly dads it has to be said.

I dislike parties of any sort tbh, but this one worked really well.

Loshad · 06/05/2007 23:06

you are not bu, it's why i only do swimming parties for the over 8's as then the lifeguards will cover it, and then either Dh or myself gets in as insurance, but would never dream of expecting all the parents to get in - immediately excludes all the muslim and observant jewish mums, and hence their dk's as well.

Lol at MI in hat and goggles at all times

DS2 (4) went to a 4yo's swimming party and we were requested to go in too which was fine by me. I knew most of the parents inc the hostess well, in fact have been swimming with some lol.

DD (5) went to a 6yo's party (same pool, a teaching pool) and I didn't go in - I think the parents roped in a couple of willing volunteers to give them enough.

I don't personally have a problem, I have to say, but then I do go swimming with them regularly. Met 2 colleagues in the pool the other morning tho, which was a bit embarrassing for some reason.

BTW FWIW pool ratios vary; this is the pool we swim in and I'm allowed to take all 3 of my children on my own (they are 7, 5 and 4 and the older 2 all competent swimmers nd all well within their depth.)

Ex-OH went to one DD went to. It seems that they needed a certain number of adults in the water.

I hate swimming, indoors in this country anyway, but wouldn't be too bothered about going... only thing is that I only own bikinis! Am at an advantage though as am a good 7 yrs younger than most of the other parents.

I had a swimming party for dd1 when she was 6, the swimming pool insisted that there were a certain number of adults in the water (I think it was 1 adult to every 3 children), I made sure I had enough adults for the amount of children dd invited.

Yuk - I can think of nothing worse. I hate going anywhere near large indoor pools as the chlorine content is so high my nose and eyes start streaming as soon as I set foot in the place , never mind actually swimming. Taking the kids swimming seems to have become something akin to a fundamentalist religion round here and people are genuinely shocked when I happily say I don't take my child swimming except outside and on holiday.
Oddly, my child is very healthy whereas all the other kids are forever getting viruses which they probably caught at the germ-ridden pool.

MrsWho · 07/05/2007 18:09

Lot of pools don't use Chlorine now, ours doesn't .I work with a child who fits when he has swam in a pool with chlorine but not in the others , so we have to be careful where we go with work.

RustyBear · 07/05/2007 22:19

I thought I'd heard that MrsWho - I suppose you'd have to find out what was in the pool before you could 'develop' an allergy to it!

Clary · 07/05/2007 23:27

wheresmysuntan I hear you about chlorine but yes, check as not all pools use it now.

My kids are hardly ever poorly and we go swimming once-twice a week thanks. at pools being germ-ridden (and everywhere else hygienically clean).
