In our local pool today an attendant asked if I had "a top" for my 3yo DD. She was wearing her favourite swim knickers. I said "no", he said, "please bring one next time". I said "She's 3!" Bikinis on preschoolers are ludicrous - i'd say obscene. Thoughts?

...and what, pray, is 'acting like a girl?' I have two girls. Sometimes they wear frocks (indeed one of them set off to the park the other day in a fairy dress, trainers and a zipup hoodie); sometimes they wear jeans; sometimes they wear a configuration of leggings and skirts and tops, none of which quite match. But when they start being self-consciously girlish, I despair.

paulaplumpbottom · 07/05/2007 13:34

I'd report it, only dirty minded people worry about things like this

WriggleJiggle · 07/05/2007 13:46

Rather than reporting it in a 'get this person sacked' sort of a way, it would be better to check out the pools policy. I can imagine a young lad (18 / 19yrs ish) making the statement just to try and be doing the right thing and keep his job, misinterpreting the situation entirely.

IcingOnTheCake · 07/05/2007 13:48

but 3yr old boys and girls look the same in terms of they both have flat cheasts with 2 nipples.i don't see the problem? if this person sees not wearing a top a sexual thing then he seriously has something wrong with him!

piximon · 07/05/2007 13:54

I think it's awful that you were told to cover her up. Personally I think the bikini tops for children look much worse than leaving them topless. My DCs usually wear the all in one UV suits but that's more about protecting their skin than covering up.
I'd complain to the manager. Children should be allowed to be children.

americantrish · 08/05/2007 16:42

i'd probably be upset at being asked to cover her up too; but if i had a girl, i'd put her in a one-piece really (SO many cute ones out there too!) not to mention pervs at swimming pools :I
not judging you, btw. we all get upset over things others wont deem 'ok' to get upset over!

Have compulsory swimming hats arrived in UK yet? They give pool attendants something to worry about, and a source of income from those who forget them.

newgirl · 08/05/2007 17:11

dont think you are unreasonable

however i have always put my dds in swimsuits because i thought swim 'pants' were just nappies and not a whole outfit iyswim? didnt give it much thought beyond that.

MrsWho · 08/05/2007 20:10

NO compulsory swimming hats here.
Where are you ?
and why?

stleger · 08/05/2007 20:15

Republic of Ireland. We like laws that are good for us and don't cost the government anything - smoking ban, plastic bag tax and swimming hats. I think it is probably to keep bits of hair from floating round pools, and to keep 'product' from getting in the water. And we look cute, like elves.

CuriousSquid · 08/05/2007 20:17

wonder what they would make of ds2 then? his hair is long, his face is quite feminine and, although we havne't yet been swimming, he will be in trunks. DS1 would only wear pink swim nappies when he was younger.

If i did have girls i think i would have a swimming costume. I don't know wy though.

When i was pg with DS2, i used to go swimming in bikini but with t shirt over the top. Usually ok but one day there was an arse of a life guard and he made me take off my t shirt.(its outdorr wear blah) I had 1 week left to go and argued that it was for the benefit of other swimmers not me. needless to say,he took one look at the spaghetti junction over my extremely large stomach and changed his mind

plibble · 08/05/2007 20:21

My daughter is tiny (10 mo) and she has a swimming costume. The last time she wore a swimming nappy it kept falling off. Plus she looks cute in the swimming costume. On the beach she can wear that or a t-shirt or be naked. I don't think I would buy her a bikini until she starts to get breasts and a waist. Little girl tummies and flat chests in bikinis look stupid IMO.

Pixel · 08/05/2007 20:29

Dd always wore a little one-piece swimsuit but only because it made her less slippery . It would never have occurred to me to put a bikini top on her, that would have been wierd and faintly icky tbh.

farnorth · 11/05/2007 21:18

Hi all

Thanks for all your discussions. I did take it up with the manager in a (what is your policy) rather than (getting at the attendant) way. Answer; pool encourages 'appropriate clothing'. So I guess me & the pool will just disagree about 'appropriate' and my 3yo will carry on wearing what she chooses to wear.

Now about her taking her swimknicks off for the shower....
