GrandTheftWalrus · 07/03/2018 13:40

I was told today that my 21lbs 15 month old DD was fine as I didn't want a "big fat child"

AIBU to be a bit Hmm about it?

Whatshallidonowpeople · 07/03/2018 13:41

Do you want a big fat child?

SequinsOnEverything · 07/03/2018 13:45

Did someone randomly say this or were you discussing her weight? 21lbs is about average isn't it? My dd is 3 and only about 27lbs.

It's not nice to say that you don't want a fat child, but is it not true?
As someone who has always struggled with my weight I do hope my daughters never do.

Pickleypickles · 07/03/2018 13:45

I really dont see the issue here sorry.

Youshallnotpass · 07/03/2018 13:45

my 2.5 year old DS is 27 lbs...

No you don't want a fat child, obesity is killing people and more and more children are overweight.

The wording could have been better though!

GrandTheftWalrus · 07/03/2018 13:47

I just thought it was a bit off to say about a small child.

OP posts:
GrandTheftWalrus · 07/03/2018 13:48

Think that's what is bothering me. The wording rather than the statement.

SimplyJaded · 07/03/2018 13:52

Yanbu...what an odd thing to say about a baby.

My ds3 was 21lbs at 6 months...he's now 9 months and a good bit bigger so must be at least a couple of lbs heavier again. He is a 'big fat' baby though, as he should be Grin

Theresasmayshoes11 · 07/03/2018 13:54

Was it your mum as I think you mentioned it on another thread?

I agree op I think it’s s horriblething to say

GrandTheftWalrus · 07/03/2018 13:56

Yeah it was my mum. Forgot to put that in OP.

I'm already terrified she's gonna pick up on my insecurities about weight.

I'd have loved a big fat child first time round. DS1's 27 and has cystic fibrosis. He's 5ft 11and about 7st. Whenever another mum complained about her DS putting on weight, I'd say, "I'll swap you."

GrandTheftWalrus · 07/03/2018 14:02

She 77cm. On the 50th centile for height and weight.

Clothes wise she's in 9-12 months. She's a good eater and very active.

OP posts:
JanDough · 07/03/2018 14:15

So she's perfectly average then?

She is fine and you don't want a fatty.

There's not much more to be said!

upsideup · 07/03/2018 14:17

Does anybody want their children to be fat? I would worry if my child was overweight and do everything I can to help them be healthy, same as I would worry and want to help them if they were over.

Theresasmayshoes11 · 07/03/2018 14:20

She sounds fine too op.

Regards the ‘fattie’ comments flying round do remember that kids can put weight on before a growth spurt through no change in diet.

My oldest ds suddenly started to look far aged 11 after being skinny and was very upset by comments from family members. Angry he then shot up 5 inches and 4 shoe sizes in a year and is now 6 foot 3 and slim.

People should watch their mouths and not start calling children fat.

italiancortado · 07/03/2018 14:23

Omg I thought you meant a health professional made the comment. It was just your mum - totally nothing of concern. She is right isn't she?

GrandTheftWalrus · 07/03/2018 14:32

If she's said something oh she's fine and no concerns would've been a bit better than a big fat child.

I was getting worried that she was going to be overweight as she has what looks like a beer belly. But I think it read that all children have that till they get older.

She's my first so I worry about everything. When we started weaning I was worried she wasn't eating enough etc.

Probably suffering from pfb-itis!

Thanks everyone!

I'm a little Hmm at some of the comments on here along the lines of 'well you don't want a fat child do you'.

Did people miss the part when the op said her child is 15 months old?

DalekDalekDalek · 07/03/2018 22:42

The "fatty" comments on here are disgusting. Since when has it been ok to refer to a child (even hypothetically) as a fatty?

GrandTheftWalrus · 07/03/2018 23:27

I think it got to me as much as I was a fat child. I was a size 16 at age 10. So it made me feel like my mum was ashamed of me.

OP posts:
Notcontent · 07/03/2018 23:37

Well, I don’t know... I think we all actually need to start being honest about this issue. Being overweight is not good, whatever age you are.

DiegoMadonna · 07/03/2018 23:55

Do English doctors/nurses/etc. still use imperial units when measuring weight, or are people here converting it?

SimplySwimming · 09/03/2018 10:27

Being overweight is not good, whatever age you are

I completely, completely disagree. I would argue that it's not possible for a baby (up to what age is debatable) to be overweight tbh...which is why I'm so surprised at the comments the op got.

No, child obesity is no laughing matter. But the ops child is ONE year old, not five or ten or fifteen.

All of mine have been like chubby, wobbly tanks at that age. Belly rolls, double chins, the lot. They still grow up into slim children.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 09/03/2018 10:34

Right I understand now OP as you've explained more. I agree with you tbh. I think given you were overweight as a child your mums comment was underhand and not at all kind.

TotHappy · 09/03/2018 10:42

They use imperial measurements in weight, Diego
