AIBU that I'm annoyed the college makes my dd wear rainbow lanyard?

My dd started at sixth form last September and despite there being no uniform as such, the students have to wear their id badges on a rainbow lanyard.I am all for inclusion and diversity but feel angry that the college enforce such political opinions on their students and wondered what had happened to freedom of choice. Then last month during tutorial they devoted a whole hour teaching the students what it meant to be lbgqt as well as what pan sexual, asexual gender neutral is. AIBU to feel that there are far more pressing things to teach the students rather than these issues. On top of this certain teachers feel obliged to air their own political opinions, deeming anyone who disagreed with them re Brexit, general election as "uneducated"
It has been 20 years or so since I was at college when the focus was on education and political opinion/persuasions were not mentioned. Is this the norm these days in Sixth form education?

And as we've said, the alphabet soup doesn't mean pro-lesbian nowadays. It means lesbian erasure & the cotton ceiling. If I had a lesbian daughter I wouldn't want her to be fed any shit by Stonewall either.

Oooeeeerrrrrindeed · 09/03/2018 18:06

Rainbows. Used by christian singers the western world over.
Or maybe it's a bifrost thing?

As an asexual person, I would have loved that when I was younger. I didn't hear the term asexual until I was in my 20s so spent a lot of time thinking there was something wrong with me. It could easily be the same for others.

I went on the Million Women Rise march in London today & it was fantastic. Huge range of women, all ages, colours, sexualities, political backgrounds. The predominant colours were red & green/white/purple.

I saw one rainbow. It was on a placard with a pointed message about ALL women which I read as a complaint about TWs not being front & centre as they are on the Women's March.

That confirmed my feeling: the rainbow is an anti-lesbian, pro-trans rights symbol now.

Can’t be bothered to read the thread, but YADNBU.

Esker · 10/03/2018 17:32

Bit weird that they 'have to' wear the one provided. Sixth form at my school (I'm a teacher) provide blue lanyards (I guess the cheapest) and then plenty of students like to buy their own.

What does your DD think?

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 10/03/2018 17:57

Goldenbug I think it was God's promise not to do it again. Could a Christian correct me please?

Genesis Chapter 9

8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, 9 “Now behold, I am establishing My covenant (binding agreement, solemn promise) with you and with your descendants after you 10 and with every living creature that is with you—the birds, the livestock, and the wild animals of the earth along with you, of everything that comes out of the ark—every living creature of the earth. 11 I will establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the water of a flood, nor shall there ever again be a flood to destroy and ruin the earth.” 12 And God said, “This is the token (visible symbol, memorial) of the [solemn] covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations; 13 I set My rainbow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth. 14 It shall come about, when I bring clouds over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the clouds, 15 and I will [compassionately] remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again will the water become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the rainbow is in the clouds and I look at it, I will [solemnly] remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 And God said to Noah, “This [rainbow] is the sign of the covenant (solemn pledge, binding agreement) which I have established between Me and all living things on the earth.”

I’d love a rainbow lanyard but we don’t wear them at work 😔

Straight myself but family and friends who are gay.... makes no difference to me so long as they are nice tea total (that bit is light hearted by the way)

Stillscreaming · 10/03/2018 18:04

And this is why no daughter of mine will be going into third level education.

Lot of schools and colleges use a 'uniform' lanyard to make instant identification easier (as pupils and staff either don't wear any uniform or everyone wears suits. For safeguarding (of other people being on premises) it is useful if at a quick scan of the room you can checked everyone who is there, should be there.

Also, from my pov as a parent, it is useful to be able to tell the difference between staff and 6th formers when in school.

Beeziekn33ze · 10/03/2018 20:35

I like rainbows, not bothered about unicorns though.
She mused irrelevantly ...

rothbury · 10/03/2018 20:46

FFS.

At my college OP all the staff are supplied with rainbow lanyards. I am still waiting to catch the gay.

Students wear different coloured lanyards depending on which faculty they are in. So (and some of you may need to lie down for this) this means some males wear pink lanyards!!!

I feel very sorry for your DD, I hope she flourishes at college and hasn't been too damaged by your narrow minded views.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 10/03/2018 20:49

At the children's hospital in Glasgow, the physios used to wear shocking pink polo shirts. And yes, some of them were men. I covered my ill son's eyes.

In 1978, our school went out of its way to encourage wider thinking rather than keep education strictly academic. I remember one session where a prison governor came to talk to us and a very interesting discussion about punishment and rehabilitation ensued.

And this is why no daughter of mine will be going into third level education.

What in case she catches teh gayz from a lanyard? You do realise that this is the 21st century, not the 19th?

YassQueen · 10/03/2018 20:58

Or maybe it's a bifrost thing?

Damn LGB+ers, they're even appropriating frost now Angry

phoenix1973 · 10/03/2018 20:59

Rainbow lanyard is fine.
Indoctrination of impressionable minds is not fine and on that point, yanbu.
Indoctrination in left wing ideals and lgbt isn't really what they're there for.

noraclavicle · 10/03/2018 21:03

I think this is what’s usually referred to as “interesting first post, OP Hmm

NotACleverName · 10/03/2018 21:06

Hmm

Good luck stopping them, I guess... ¯\(ツ)

LaurieMarlow · 10/03/2018 21:11

I think that comment may have been tongue in cheek Wink

MidniteScribbler · 10/03/2018 21:50

Ooops, DS wanted a rainbow room last time I redecorated it. He sleeps with a big rainbow canvas above his bed. I've obviously turned by 6 year old gay.

Of course, he likes black now, so I'm guessing the next redecoration will turn him into a Death Eater.

entropynow · 10/03/2018 22:27

Interestingly enough the NHS are pushing us ( staff) to wear rainbow lanyards at our Trust. And they are to promote LGBT positivity etc
hmm/

/hmm right back at you, you sound like a nasty bigot. I pity any of your colleagues/patients who are in any of those minorities - and at least one of them probably is, whether you know if or not.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 10/03/2018 22:42

There are at least two lesbians on this thread saying that we would run a mile from the LGBTQ++ rainbow and what it stands for nowadays.

I was on a march full of lesbians today who shunned the rainbow as a symbol.

Why is nobody listening to us?

blastomama · 10/03/2018 22:46

because they all think they are cute and funny to attack OP and ignore you, Empress.
In essence, they are just wankers.

sleep5 · 10/03/2018 22:52

I'd rather wear a rainbow lanyard rather than the ugly one I've got at the moment with my company's logo all over it!

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 10/03/2018 22:57

blasto Wine

Did you know the new LGBT Tories Committee is all male? Questions about this on Twitter are getting fuzzy answers about "gender identity".

The rainbow really is all about misogyny & lesbophobia now Sad
