AIBU to think bumbags are strange things? (Lighthearted but bewildered)

I just don't get their purpose. What does a bumbag do that a normal bag can't? I am being lighthearted but also genuinely bewildered!

Do you have a bumbag? Why did you chose that over a little cross-body bag or something similar?

And the American name for them, fanny pack, is funny, right? Or am I being very immature?

I’m a nurse and love my bum bag for work! I work in mental health so can’t wear anything cross body in case someone pulls it so bum bag is the way forward, can carry all my bits and pieces in it.
I would however never wear one outside of work. They just look bizarre.
And no you aren’t the only one ‘fanny pack’ is hilarious.

Cavender · 07/03/2018 04:38

Fanny is the equivalent of bum in the US. But yes, even after living here for a number of years it does make me smile quietly.

I’m not a fan of bum bags. Hard to carry off with any modicum of style.

RealityHasALiberalBias · 07/03/2018 04:39

They’re ugly, but very practical. Much easier to use than a cross body bag and no straps to get in the way.

WilyMinx · 07/03/2018 04:48

I think the bum bag is one of the best inventions ever and wish they were more fashionable.
My shoulders get achy quite quickly when using a cross body bag, and they sometimes dangle when you're leaning forward, and the bigger ones obstruct your view. Bum bags are just more comfortable and practical.

SuperBeagle · 07/03/2018 04:48

If I see anyone wearing a bumbag in public, I assume they're an American tourist. Probably also wearing a visor and a lanyard.

They're bloody awful.

DalekDalekDalek · 07/03/2018 04:48

I only mention because I've seen them on the websites for some shops in the last few days and am getting flashbacks to my 90s childhood. Glad I'm not the only one who sniggers at fanny packs!

WilyMinx that does make sense and explains them a little, thank you. I will assume bumbag wearers have back or shoulder pain from now on. There are many on the New Look website at the moment so I assume they are coming back into fashion.

How about one of these OP Shock

This one seems reasonable but the model clearly doesn't understand how a bumbag works. (See second photo!) Grin

All the edgy students wear them here to go clubbing. Very practical I think! I have one I wear for long runs. But I am not edgy.

WhoWants2Know · 07/03/2018 04:58

They're good to have at theme parks when you need to go on rides without carrying handbags.

TheWildOnes · 07/03/2018 05:00

I wish these were more popular 10/15 years ago, I'd have been a lot less likely to lose my bag/keys/money and phone so often on nights out.

WhoWants2Know · 07/03/2018 05:04

This is a style I see at Festivals, and it's a bit more up my street. Less of the elderly tourist feel.

GinSolvesEverything · 07/03/2018 06:02

They are definitely back in fashion. I was at a music festival at the weekend, and loads of the cool kids were wearing them.

TheCatsMother44 · 07/03/2018 06:07

I use them at dance festivals etc. They're much easier to deal with than a bag with a strap that keeps falling down, plus mlre comfortable when dancing.

I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone wearing one other than at a music event though (apart from in america).

Mumathon · 07/03/2018 06:39

I wear one for running, I have to carry some medical supplies with me if I go far so it’s useful for those and my phone etc.

chipsandpeas · 07/03/2018 07:13

im considering one for an upcoming trip to the US which is going to involve a few days at theme parks, will make life slightly easier than carrying a handbag

NymeriaStark · 07/03/2018 07:15

Fanny packs as they’re called stateside...

IdaBlankenship · 07/03/2018 07:18

I wear one for dog walking. It is ugly but I don't care. It carries poo bags, my phone and keys & is hands free, perfect. No one points and laughs at me.... so far

speakout · 07/03/2018 07:22

Hugely practical.
Great when travelling.
I backpacked around SE for a year and my bumbag was a lifesaver.
What else can you carry important stuff in when you have a huge rucksack with you? A handbag?
You can't leave passport and valuables in the top or side of a rucksack, they will get pinched.

LadySainsburySeal · 07/03/2018 07:23

I use one on holiday so I don't have to carry a bag with me.

Fletchasaurus · 07/03/2018 07:23

Oh my god I had a teddy bear one as a kid..... wanders off into nostalgia

DontOpenDeadInside · 07/03/2018 07:30

I also wear one for dog walking, bike riding and work (why do they not put decent pockets in women's joggers?) I was a little embarrassed at first, but I must have brought them back into fashion Wink (been using one for about 5 years)
I carry poo bags, keys, phone, dog lead if I'm not using it at the time, tissues and money when I'm at work.

LolitaLempicka · 07/03/2018 07:32

They have been back in fashion for a while now, I think Kylie Jenner made them really popular. They are also called fanny packs in the UK now. I think Kylie Jenner made that popular too.

MissWilmottsGhost · 07/03/2018 07:33

Fanny packs? Grin

I used to have one, it was fab. Just the right size for my wallet and phone, and no annoying shoulder straps.

Handbags are shit, they always fall off my shoulder. I can only carry backpacks, but nice ones are hard to find.

Glad to hear bumbags are coming back into fashion. I might dig out my old one.
