AIBU to think Premier Inn should’ve let homeless in.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/premier-inn-homeless-people-turned-away-customer-paying-westonsupermare-a8240171.html

A woman who couldn’t make her mass booking of 19 rooms due to the weather last week offered the rooms to the homeless in the area via a charity’s Facebook.
A couple who had a flooded home were also given a room.
Flood couple let in no problem, homeless people who attended with charity rep were turned away.
Now Premier are saying they needed the lead room booker to be there and ID to be presented which is obviously bollocks because the flooded home couple were allowed in with no problem.

AIBU to think they should’ve let them in, it was bitterly cold and I think they acted heartlessly. Then the backtracking that followed. AIBU to boycott them? Would you?

And yes, they can ring to the police if they cause trouble, but the police is not going to pay for any damage caused at all.

Oddish · 07/03/2018 22:58

I don’t think it’s a level question to ask ‘why not open your own house to the homeless?’ It’s purely so the asker can say hah see you don’t really care that much. I wouldn’t have anyone I didn’t know stay in my home. Surely that’s not unreasonable. It’s like saying someone doesn’t really care about stray dogs/abandoned cats/whatever because they don’t house them themselves. It’s a ridiculous argument.

Edna How fucking dare you talk to me like that. I have long running threads on here on social housing and Grenfell and am also part of a campaign to change the way tenants are viewed and treated.

And im a social housing tenant myself.

So do fuck off with your abuse of posters on here who you know sweet fuck all about.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/03/2018 22:59

I don’t think it was an altruistic gesture at all, l think she was pissed off they wouldn’t refund her so did it as revenge because she knew they’d either have huge problems or turn them away and she could get bad press

I help a friend run his ariBnB businesswhile he was abroad, you can’t begin to imagine the mischief that some paying guests, who look normal in the outside can do: using room bins as toilets, stealing artworks, crockery and other things put in place to make their stay nice. And quite a bit of noise at night, or the usual prostitute renting a room to ro I de services. All these people cause bad reviews which ultimately damage the business.

I perfectly understand they don’t want to risk their property or the safety of their guests. They are not a shelter.

SharronNeedles · 07/03/2018 23:05

oddish but why wouldn't you have someone you don't know in your home?

A hotel operates the same way, they won't have anyone they can't guarantee or identify stay in their hotel.

Even from another perspective, if there was a fire they give rooming lists to the staff and the fire brigade. Unidentified people would be a huge risk to their own lives and put the fire fighters in danger. Obviously you can't monitor the movements of your guests but if you know who was staying in each room at the very least you can identify them.

Oddish · 07/03/2018 23:11

Sharron because home is my sanctuary and I don’t trust people I don’t know. I have realised why it wouldn’t work at the hotel, thanks to some helpful input on this thread. It was a heart based knee jerk reaction. I wish it could’ve happened, with all my heart, but it didn’t and couldn’t, I see that.

Don't get me wrong, I think it is a lovely thought. If would be really nice and faith restoring if a the homeless people did have somewhere warm and safe to go especially on cold nights. It's upsetting that they don't and really upsetting that the recent weather caused so many deaths. I too wish things could be different. I've worked in hotels too long now to know that it could never happen. There are too many grey areas and complications.

Helena, these are not tenants. They are homeless.

Starting a thread on social housing means fuck all.

HelenaDove · 07/03/2018 23:49

Edna im not quite sure why you are attacking me on here

"Helena, these are not tenants. They are homeless.

Starting a thread on social housing means fuck all"

AS ARE SOME OF THE GRENFELL RESIDENTS ............STILL

ive been to our local homeless shelter and donated. Am i supposed to break my tenancy agreement by asking them all to live in our one bedroom flat with me and my knocking on 70 disabled DH?

come on then oh great one what are your ideas.

And have you complained to Channel 4 news about the guy who was abusing the homeless man.

Or is it just that you like bullying women on here?

Are you finding it a turn on to come on here and bully ppl who have done nothing wrong?

FifiVoldemortsChavvyCousin · 07/03/2018 23:52

Edna

Set aside half an hour to read all 15 pages. There are some well thought out posts here from people with experience of working with people who sleep on the streets.

HelenaDove · 07/03/2018 23:56

Edna what are your ideas about what i should do please.

If i ask a couple of them to live here you could always put us all up when DH and i get booted out for breaking the tenancy agreement. Sounds fair right?

HelenaDove · 07/03/2018 23:59

No one has said they arent worth it

AGAIN WHAT ARE YOUR IDEAS ABOUT WHAT WE CAN ALL DO?

HelenaDove · 08/03/2018 00:03

................WAITING.

EdnaAverage · 08/03/2018 00:55

Once again, im currently homeless, so no, I cant house you. Ive a spare tent I am willing to lend. I sleep in my vehicle most nights, paying for camping, so im relatively safe. I take odd jobs to pay my way.

Im not saying anyone should put people up in their houses, but resenting them a paid for hotel room, and justifying it by presuming they would have the will or of energy to trash said room, is very wrong.

Try treating people like human beings, who need warmth, shelter and food. There was absolutely no need to treat these people like maurading animals.

Ive 'worked' in a shelter that helped me a while back. It was absolutely not a helpful place.

Oh, and try not looking down on people who use drugs or alcohol to tolerate their situation.

You and your husband wouldn't become bad people who would trash hotel rooms if you were homeless. Nor are most of the homeless on the street.

People help stray cats and dogs, but deem human beings unworthy.

HelenaDove · 08/03/2018 01:01

I never said they or you would trash a hotel room.

I told you i have been to the local shelter and ive also given money food and sanpro and you STILL got arsey.

Although if you had mentioned you were homeless i would have and do understand where your anger is coming from.

HelenaDove · 08/03/2018 01:05

Well Edna given the fact that my husband has emphysema i doubt he would last long on the street. I havent failed to notice the rise of older people on the street either.

Edna - you’re picking on the wrong person.

I hope your situation improves soon.

EdnaAverage · 08/03/2018 01:09

Yes, there are many older people who arent housed. I just deteriorate. But I have a vehicle, camping, a goodish tent. I stay rural. I hope you and yours never know what its like to be desperate for a shower, clean clothes, and a warm bed.

Those hotel rooms were paid for, but premier inn chose to treat people like feral animals.

I dont see me lasting another year. But who cares, as long as I drink, or whatever.

HelenaDove · 08/03/2018 01:13

Unfortunately Edna i probably will when DH isnt around anymore.

I hope your situ improves soon.

I take it you have been told that you are not priority.

MsMims · 08/03/2018 01:15

Jesus Edna, calm down and back off.

Lots of people on the streets are there because they can’t/ won’t abide by rules in a shelter. If they aren’t accepted by a shelter for their very situation, why on earth should paying guests have to share the same space?

The homeless thing is a red herring too. When I’ve stayed in hotels it’s the norm to show ID and have a payment card listed. Would this woman’s generosity have extended to any damages too?
