To quit my job tomorrow

loulou82 · 05/03/2018 23:08

I have over 15 years experience in my field that is quite specialist and was poached by this new firm from my last job that I loved but wanted a new challenge.

In the interview I was told I would be driving the business forward with my expertise.

2nd day in new job and I'm told I'm to cold call and develop new business in a totally different field of expertise. Totally mind numbing entry level role which my salary doesn't reflect.

I've lasted 8 months trying to develop this business without success. On the side I was working on a project that will earn the company millions and finally got to present it today, the owner of the company verbally smashed it to pieces in front of everyone. I was devastated.

This is the same boss that said to one of the male staff 'if you sell this item i will personally get Christine Bleekly to suck you off in the town square'

Similar 'bants' fly around the office and I just can't be assed to fight my own company to make them money when I'm also having to listen to this same old shit.

Sounds horrendous. Do you have another job to go to?

Mrsramsayscat · 05/03/2018 23:17

See whether previous company would take you back?

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 05/03/2018 23:20

Find something else before you leave.

DalekDalekDalek · 05/03/2018 23:21

Don't quit unless you have something to go to or savings to support yourself. Better stick it out and get a wage from them while you look for another job.

loulou82 · 05/03/2018 23:24

I moved from London to the midlands for the job so can't go back as am settled up here with DH and DC.

Just wanted to know if I am overreacting as i haven't moved jobs too much and have had mainly positive bosses and employment so far.

I just can't quite believe how shockingly shit they've behaved. This was the same boss that made us pay for our own Xmas party and then shouted at us for opening secret santa presents on work time.

Jeez as I'm writing this I think I'm not BU.

You'd be unreasonable if you didn't leave. They don't deserve you.

Thelampshadelady · 05/03/2018 23:29

Sounds horrible op.
I would definitely try and find another job before quitting unless you are in a position to not have to worry.

GreenTulips · 05/03/2018 23:29

Start a diary
Start looking for another job

AdoraBell · 05/03/2018 23:29

YANBU, but I would look for another job before leaving.

Eveforever · 05/03/2018 23:39

Your boss sounds delightful. He's not going to change, I would leave. However, unless you're financially secure or about to have a mental breakdown, I would try and find another job beforehand. I worked for a complete prick nearly 20 years ago and I still regret staying for as long as I did.

SusieOwl4 · 05/03/2018 23:40

Can you manage without the salary while you look for something else ? If so then just go . Go back to doing something you love and when you get an interview and they ask why you left the last one just be honest and say the job was misrepresented .

Laine21 · 05/03/2018 23:43

You've presented your idea, now make sure they don't 'pinch it'

Look for another job in a company that will value your experience and skills.

loulou82 · 06/03/2018 06:22

Thanks everyone, we sold our house in London and sitting on the cash so financially fine but don't want to be eating into the cash ideally.

Was holding out to see if it got better and it's just getting worse.

Will report back on the fall out of today. Owner of the company is one of those red faced angry men who is and utter prick so not looking forward to the conversation.

Can you get on the phone to recruiters first. Maybe just tread water at current place. You’re right to leave though, sounds awful.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/03/2018 06:35

Good luck today OP, working there sounds horrendous.

StealthPolarBear · 06/03/2018 06:39

Love your description of him! Good luck oo

flumpybear · 06/03/2018 06:39

God how awful! So sorry on behalf of all midlands businesses! (I love in the East Midlands, also moved from London)

Can I ask what you specialise in?

TSSDNCOP · 06/03/2018 06:43

Is he like my boss though? My boss, whilst “encouraging” staff just as the HR manual and all his management training books say, absolutely cannot handle anyone having a good idea unles it’s him.

He’s so bad he’ll eviscerate a person with the idea, then it n the same meetings by contrive to repackage it as his own.

Be careful you ensure the meeting you were at is minuted and grab a pdf copy. It wouldn’t surprise me if, in the next weeks or right after you leave, your idea suddenly takes off.

Slartybartfast · 06/03/2018 06:44

would anybody back your idea op?
is this how he works?
will he tweet it and then put it forward as his own idea?

billybagpuss · 06/03/2018 06:47

I take it its a small company without an HR as certain comments need to be reported. Good luck today.

eddielizzard · 06/03/2018 06:53

that is unbelievably shit. i would start looking for a new job, and yes the conversation will be hard. you'll get through it and you'll look back on this time with relief that you didn't stay a second longer than you had to.

JaneEyre70 · 06/03/2018 06:57

Hand your notice in. Even agency work would be better than what you are doing. Life's too short.

loulou82 · 06/03/2018 06:58

I've only worked with the owner for 8 months but in this time have seen some appalling behaviour. Vile comments about sex wrapped up in 'jokes'.

I work in the clothing field. Nobody in the company could actually follow through and develop my idea when I leave as they don't have the experience (hence why I thought they hired me) so he really is shooting him self in the foot.

The whole company stinks of demoralisation and angry misogyny.

OP posts:
AJPTaylor · 06/03/2018 07:03

oh jeez..
if you are sitting on cash and havent bought a house there, just leave and invest your time finding a new role.
if you have made a mistake taking a job and relocating, just name it and movr on.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 06/03/2018 07:15

You’d be daft to leave before getting another job. Not because of the money, but because of what that says to prospective employers.

Talk to your DH. You haven’t bought a house there, he might be happy to move back to London or elsewhere if you find a great job away from where you are now. The kids will be fine.

Hunt hard, but take your time to find something great. Don’t let this dent your confidence that you can do that.

Just do whatever it takes to get through the meeting today, then do the bare minimum while job hunting - super prick deserves it.

I’d love to see him asking CB if she’s free a week next Wednesday as he’s offered her services to one of his staff 🤣😂. Monumental prick.
