How legal is this?

DD Works in a bar which requires shorts and bare legs as uniform. Last night she was working as was told to go outside with a coat on (but still was in shorts with bare legs) to hand out promotional vouchers for the bar while it was snowing.

She’s just told me this, she isn’t planning on saying anything. But I’m annoyed a bit. I know she’s an adult, I’m not trying to run her life or make her do anything but how is her workplace allowed to send her out in shorts in the snow??

Do the men have to wear shorts with bare legs?

DeathStare · 03/03/2018 13:01

If she's not a Union member she should join one. Whether it's legal or not it's the kind of thing her union would take up

Jerem · 03/03/2018 13:02

It’s a women staff only bar.

To be fair, they are very very protected. No touching from the men or they’re immediately thrown out. No crude talk or they can refuse to serve.

She can ask for a compromise and put tights on. Did she do that, or object?

LavenderTrug · 03/03/2018 14:12

Is it Hooters?

What law do you think prevents it?

Try this for some info?

DD1 works in a bar. Her uniform is long sleeved black shirt, black trousers and apron. I think your DD needs to look for another job, tbh.

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 03/03/2018 14:42

I think your DD needs to look for another job, tbh

Seconded.

Let me guess, no overweight or 'ugly' women work there.

frankchickens · 03/03/2018 14:51

It’s a women staff only bar.

That's not legal - at least in the UK.

Stompythedinosaur · 03/03/2018 14:55

Obviously this shouldn't happen.

But it can't be that much of a surprise that people who run a bar which makes money from sexually objectifying women probably aren't that interested in the welfare of the women in question.

I would advise her to look for a different job (and to raise her standards in terms of how she is willing to be treated).

liz70 · 03/03/2018 14:57

Sounds like a "gentlemen's" club.

Jerem · 03/03/2018 14:57

Not hooters. We’re in the U.K. no she didn’t refuse, she did her job. She just told me she was out in the snow. I’m the one who’s annoyed. No covering up while out is allowed.

Also about the no overweight or ugly comment, My DD is not the tiniest person. She’s not obese by any stretch but is over weight as are a lot of the girls there. Their personalities got them the job thanks

My question was In relation to how they can make you work in certain temperatures without appropriate clothing.
Not about her self respect or to change her job.

I don’t finance her, I’m not able. So I won’t tell her to get another job. She needs that money to live on and if she wants a change she’ll have to work that out. It’s not a gentleman club. It is a bar with different branches round the U.K. I’m not naming it as it’s her workplace and her business.

"Their personalities got them the job "

And their bare legs…

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 03/03/2018 15:03

Their personalities got them the job thanks

Okay, I stand corrected. The point I was making (somewhat badly) was regarding women just being there to show off their flesh, for no reason other than to titillate men.

They won't be arsed about the health of their staff, because they are not important to them. They are only women after all. A medium to bring in punters.

Jerem · 03/03/2018 15:06

Leaving this thread now. Im not having my child mad out to be being used as some kind of stripper. None of you would take that talk about your own child either before you pipe up.

Bluntness100 · 03/03/2018 15:06

Oh cmon . If this was solely about their personalities the staff wouldn't be all female and wouldn't be half naked. I've no doubt her personality has a large part in getting the job due to what is probably expected in thr role ie extrovert or able to handle themselves, but clearly there is more to it if they have to be half naked and there are strict rules about the men not touching them.

ChelleDawg2020 · 03/03/2018 15:08

If she had a problem she should have objected at the time. If she didn't, I don't think you need to worry about it.

I've seen several people out and about in the snow in shorts over the past few days. Apparently by choice!

Huuwayeye · 03/03/2018 15:09

Yanbu to be annoyed op. Equally I can understand your dd not wanting (or wanting you) to make a fuss about it. I wonder if there are any health and safety regulations about uniform needing to be weather appropriate.

Ginger1982 · 03/03/2018 15:11

No covering up outside is allowed?

Wake up OP. She should get a new job.

Viviennemary · 03/03/2018 15:13

TBH I wouldn't want my DD working in a bar where skimpy clothing is the rule. It's exploitation of women. Tell her to get another job.

SweetMoon · 03/03/2018 15:13

No one has said your dd is a stripper or compared her to one. But come on. She works in a bag staffed only by women and they have to show off their legs.

I'm sure her personality played a part in her getting this job but that would only be because they wouldn't want shy timid girls in what seems to be a male dominated environment with the emphasis on look but don't touch. Why do you think they wear shorts op? It's not because it's hot out. It's so they can be ogled.

Steeley113 · 03/03/2018 15:17

I think it’s quite common tbh, a lot of ‘flyer’ girls are scantily dressed in all weathers. As for everyone saying your daughter should get a new job, I worked at a UK branch of hooters while I was at uni. It was one of my jobs which supported me during my nurse training and tbh, was probably some of the most fun I had while working!
