To be cross at teenager for eating

Imaginationfail · 02/03/2018 17:58

On one hand. Thank goodness she eats. But venting. That pizza I bought for tea. Eaten as snack. Those spring rolls bought for tea eaten as a snack. I go to make tea - half ingredients gone. Then she won’t eat tea!

Did she know they were for your dinner?

Allthebestnamesareused · 02/03/2018 18:02

I am intrigued that if pizza and spring rolls are half the ingredients what are the other half and what was tea going to be

Copperspot · 02/03/2018 18:03

i think that is really, really selfish of her. Obviously things like that are for meals!

When i was living at home we had a ‘shit cupboard’ full of snacks like crackers / bagels / supernoodles, etc would that be an idea? And actually point out to her that she has eaten things that were for meals, but she CAN eat xyz.

BarbarianMum · 02/03/2018 18:04

My dsis instituted a snack shelf in the fridge when dnephew was at his hungriest. Anything on it was fair game, as were bread, milk, crisps, fruit etc. But the rest of the fridge was hands off.

SneakyGremlins · 02/03/2018 18:04

Copper is it possible that said items were in the freezer, and she ate them AS her tea? It is dinnertime..

falsepriest · 02/03/2018 18:04

Then she won't need tea then. -shrug-

AuditAngel · 02/03/2018 18:07

DH does this to me, so this week I wrote out a meal plan so he could see what was planned for meals. That has helped, even 13 yo DS asked if he was allowed to eat a fridge item that is sometimes snacks and sometimes tea.

Passportto · 02/03/2018 18:07

My teens know to ask before eating "meal" type food. They have free run of bread, cheese, cereal, fruit etc but if it's something that could be intended for the basis of a meal, they would ask.

noeffingidea · 02/03/2018 18:07

You have to lay the law down. My kids always had to ask before they took anything from the fridge or cupboard, thats the way I was brought up as well. Otherwise there wouldn't have been enough food to go round.

Copperspot · 02/03/2018 18:09

True, was she actually having them as her meal? Still thoughtless but more understandable!

My money is on oven chips

RebootYourEngine · 02/03/2018 18:19

My ds does this. He will just eat anything and everything. He has his own snacks and food and i have my own but he will eat all of his and then eat mine too. He would cost me a fortune in snacks. Half a loaf, a whole multipack of sweets, packet of ham in one day.

I go to make breakfast to find that it has been eaten during the night.

Pengggwn · 02/03/2018 18:20

If you've made it clear to her what equals 'snack' food on your house, and if she isn't eating meals because she is snacking, she is being selfish and unreasonable.

Ilove · 02/03/2018 18:27

I have teens, and I foster teens.

I’ve learned, over the years...

A standard stock of cheap, 99p cheese and tomato pizzas and garlic bread, free to eat.

Pasta. Basics tomato pasta sauce. Cheap ham. LOADS of bananas and 22p packs of biscuits.

Fridge stuff on a set shelf they can eat whatever they want. CupboRD stuff the same. Rice is cheap too - boil it, add frozen peas and chopped onion, they will add it to anything.

Teenagers are hungry. They are hollow. Let them eat. I feed their friends too. Rather they were in, eating me out of house and home, than out doing whatever on a street corner.

Ilove · 02/03/2018 18:28

I currently have 5 teens living here, from Sunday it will be 7. No, it isn’t “cheap”.

But. Sometimes, you have to work out what is more annoying...empty fridge or the kids at someone elses house, or out doing whatever.

Maybe I’m odd.

Ilove · 02/03/2018 18:30

The only thing that does annoy me is the quantity of cheese they go through! DS2 and one foster child used to go through 3 kilos in a week...

Whatshallidonowpeople · 02/03/2018 18:30

Snacking between meals is what makes people overweight. Teens don't need endless food. Stop encouraging her to overeat

Enuffsenuffsenuff · 02/03/2018 18:31

Can you have a shelf or a cupboard full of sensible snacks she can eat? Teenagerd IME are always starving but you could direct her towards things that aren't destroying your meal plans!

Ivebeenaroundtheblock · 02/03/2018 18:35

Masking tape and felt marker are your friends when there are hungry teenagers in the house.
Btw pizza and spring rolls are you aiming for multicultural dinner night?

Eltonjohnssyrup · 02/03/2018 18:35

what, teenagers who are growing, active and not overweight don’t need to think about limiting their food intake. No wonder so many girls end up with disordered eating if they’re being told to limit food for no reason.

Appuskidu · 02/03/2018 18:35

What does she say when you tell her that was dinner for the whole family?

I would be having firm words about being considerate and conscientious when you’re not the one paying for the food or planning the meals!

My teens have never done this but if they did-I would be v cross! They always ask if they can eat eat x or if it’s for something special.

Titsywoo · 02/03/2018 18:36

I keep sensible snacks for my 13 year old DD. Lots of fruit, crackers, homemade tomato soup in the fridge, bread rolls etc. My kids always ask me if they can have something though.

2boysnamedR · 02/03/2018 18:38

My teen does this. I prepared a lasagna for tonight’s tea for a family of six - he wanted it for lunch!

Get some pesto and tons of pasta. Bulk cook it and leave in the fridge to help herself. I do this when my teen annoys me enough. Or lots of eggs. He cooks all sorts with eggs.

SockMobster · 02/03/2018 18:39

They do however need to think about nutrition.

CobraKai · 02/03/2018 18:43

Not sure if I was an odd teenager but I certainly wouldn't have been kept in or distracted by cheap pizzas or any kind of food.

If I was going to be out doing 'whatever'. That's what I did. I'm not sure easily available food ever stopped teenagers from meeting their friends, drinking, smoking or shagging or whatever
