Should I attempt to go into work?

We are in south east wales, got a few inches of snow but not as much as forecast.
I work 7 miles away.
My immediate boss and the big boss (only 7 people in company) live within a mile or so and will be walking in if can’t drive
The others live Cardiff way.
Would you attempt to drive in? Walking would take probably 2 hours in this weather and some of it doesn’t have pavements.
I’m nothing important (admin) but am fairly new so don’t want to not go in if they are thinking I could have got there!

If I couldn't drive in safely then no I wouldn't be going on

donajimena · 02/03/2018 06:47

Is work in Cardiff? I'm in Cardiff its awful here so id say no.

BrieAndChilli · 02/03/2018 06:49

Could you cycle instead (no idea how slippy your rds are)- safer than driving as you can get around stuck cars, faster than walking.
Could you ring work and ask what to do - but offer to walk / cycle in if you are needed.

Glumglowworm · 02/03/2018 06:58

No. I’m in south east wales too, the trains and buses aren’t running at the moment, Cardiff bus normally keeps going through bad weather, so if they’re not running that’s a good indication of how bad the roads are.

BrieAndChilli · 02/03/2018 06:58

I don’t have a bike,

I think if I was new then I would attempt it. Sometimes it's better to show that you tried at least than just not try at all.

Obviously don't if you think it's really dangerous.

Redcherries · 02/03/2018 07:03

I don’t think I’d be offering to walk or cycle 7 miles in this on roads with no pavements. I’d give them a call.

DarthNigel · 02/03/2018 07:04

Nope

PrincessHairyMclary · 02/03/2018 07:04

What do the Police recommend? If they have told people not to travel then I would ring up citing their advice. If not go in and leave early if it get worse.

AJPTaylor · 02/03/2018 07:07

No. If you are worried about driving dont go.
In almost every job i have ever had there are always those that walk miles, those that drive in dangeros conditions.
I consider my lack of experience in driving in such conditions, the bad driving of others and the amount of my insurance excess.

Pengggwn · 02/03/2018 07:09

It depends. I drove to work yesterday on A roads in 'a few inches' of snow and it was fine because it was flat, but as soon as I had to drive up a hill the car was struggling. What's the terrain like?

userabcname · 02/03/2018 07:09

No. It's not reasonable to walk 7 miles and it's not safe to drive.

borntobequiet · 02/03/2018 07:18

7 miles will take a lot longer than 2 hours to walk in these conditions.

Glumglowworm · 02/03/2018 07:19

If the others live around Cardiff they’re likely to struggle as well anyway

Bornlazy · 02/03/2018 07:27

Don't do it. I live in Scotland and had to drive to work yesterday in the Red Weather Warning ( I am a nurse ) and the only thing that made it possible was that most people had taken the advice and the roads were empty.

LakieLady · 02/03/2018 07:29

Don't be part of the problem, OP.

Just watching the news and there are people who've been stuck in their cars for 12 hours or more. If they'd all followed the advice not to travel, they'd be at home in the warm.

If you're boss has seen the news, I'm sure he'll understand.

Flamingo84 · 02/03/2018 07:31

No, advice on the BBC news for Cardiff is don’t travel unless you have to and Sian Lloyd specifically mentioned hospital employees. We’re also due more snow later. If you start walking and get caught in it you’ll be really stuck.
They showed footage of the Coryton roundabout and it was empty, only one abandoned car.
Stay safe.

Mrsmadevans · 02/03/2018 07:34

OP stay put , ring up and tell them you will take holiday .
No one normal would expect you to walk 7 miles. Take care.

ShangriLaLaLa · 02/03/2018 07:40

DH is going to have to go from Cardiff up the A470 in half an hour. NHS and he has a 4x4 but the thought of it just petrifies me. I showed him the Siân Lloyd footage but he’s so committed, he’s doing it without hesitation. I’m packing blankets, water and snacks and he’s looking at me as if I’ve lost the plot 🙄

I’d definitely stay put OP.

ArchchancellorsHat · 02/03/2018 07:41

Is working from home an option? I don't think I'd make the journey: It's not just the way in, it's the way home again too.

wellhonestly · 02/03/2018 07:43

Took me 40 minutes to walk a mile and a half in the snow yesterday. Seven miles is too much to walk in snow unless it's a life-and-limb type situation (like, I would do it to get medicine for the DCs, that type of thing)...

Does your manager have a mobile number you can reach her/ him on? For an "It's really bad here, I can't get my car on to the main road" type conversation? Or phone the office when you think they'll be there. Or do you have the type of job where you could offer to do some kind of task at home?

londonrach · 02/03/2018 07:44

Shangril...pack a spade too and an empty bottle in case he needs the toilet. Op i wouldnt risk it.

BrieAndChilli · 02/03/2018 08:23

Just spoke to boss and she has said not to attempt to drive so going sledging with kids in the field over the road!
Can’t really do anything from Home but have some internet research I can do over the weekend at some point .

Glad your boss is reasonable! Enjoy your day with the kids.
