I know IABU but DS's 1st birthday is going to be shit

I know he won't understand or remember, but we had to cancel his little family party today (snow), we won't get out tomorrow (snow), no post has come with any cards from family (snow) so he has one sad little tesco card from DH and I, I baked a cake but it is an utter cakewreck, and DD will probably try to pinch his new toys. Her 1st birthday was a gorgeous summer day, family in the garden, loads of presents, huge fuss. His is just a normal, somewhat crappy day.

I feel crappy anyway because he seems to get a raw deal (unavoidably) and it took me quite a while to bond with him - his first few months were riddled with pain and illnesses and injury. I bonded with DD instantly even though her birth was appalling and she was what they call a 'high needs' baby, and DS is a happy wee soul.

So IABU and need to give my head a wobble I suppose but I feel crap. Happy 1st birthday DS :(

Oh dear op, I really feel for you! It's all a bit crap. But this is one of those times when you as a Mum have to really dig deep and make the best of things for everyone including your older dd. Try and be jolly, remember that you are happy your ds is here, make a monumental effort to make an occasion of things tomorrow even with just a shop bought cake and candles. Tis what being a parent is all about.

My pfb's birthday was in early January. Her party was her grandparents and one cousin and a few handmade sandwiches and a shop bought cake.

Believe me, she has made up for it with her birthdays as she's got older!

Completely understand. Ive had a good cry in similar circumstances. Dc will spend birthday number 1 in intensive care following open heat surgery. We have planned a party for a different date entirely to make a fuss and get the gorgeous pics.

We're having the same issue but with my baby's 18th birthday! People just can't travel. I had a little cry but hey ho. We'll make the best of the situation and so will you. Please try not to be too upset.

My DS had an hernia op on his third birthday. We pretended his birthday was a week later instead - had to shush the nurse when she came in before his op, and was like "oohhh its your..." SHUSSSHHHHH!!! He was none the wiser

Oh my goodness, I was so intent in giving my pfb ds the best 1st birthday party ever, I went completely overboard and I cringe to think about it. I hired a hall far too huge and I spent hours making decorations night before so hardly got any sleep. I almost had a meltdown when DS had the longest nap ever and I thought he was going to miss his own birthday party. Not that I would wake him up because he was my pfb! I bossed people around, got really annoyed when someone starting singing the Happy Birthday song before me, and even got arsey with my own dad because he was in charge of drinks and he hadn't thought to put them in a fridge so they were all luke warm. This was 13 years ago and I honestly cannot stop cringing whenever I think about it.

I wish I'd just spent the day indoors with him and giving him cuddles because that's all they need when they're 1!!

My little Granddaughter's 1st Birthday was 2 weeks ago. She had been unwell (again). Beautiful, sunny day but absolutely Baltic! Everything we planned has been rescheduled for the Spring - do the same for your little boy + whoever else you'd like to be there. Meantime, take lots of photos. Let him "get in about" a M&S pig in a mud-bath cake

I was in hospital having an operation on DD2's 1st birthday. Cancelling a party to make sure everyone is safe is very sensible, and he won't remember it.

You made a cake. He will love it! I’m deadly serious - they have a different perspective on life.
