to not understand how you can just ‘become’ a psychic

OK so I went to school with a girl who I still have on FB. She has always been heavily into MLM, until her most recent one failed and she took herself off social media until yesterday when she posted this message

‘From tomorrow I will be offering psychic readings. I have been practicing on family and friends to gain more confidence and light. Going forward this will be part of my light work and so the price for this will be £10 per reading’

And so many commenters are lapping it up!

She’s so irritating but so fascinating. I don’t know how she makes money from this though, how are people this gullible? And wtf is light work???

I’m clearly doing something wrong working!

Because it is BS, as simple as that

DalekDalekDalek · 28/02/2018 23:08

There a "psychic" on the estate where I live. Advertises himself on our Facebook group. PMSL!

HobnobBob · 28/02/2018 23:09

Because it is BS, as simple as that

Yup.

MaisyPops · 28/02/2018 23:13

It's bullshit that's why.

"I sense there's something weighing on your mind. You want ro discuss it with someone special but aren't sure how."

"I see an image of an elderly person. They wanr you to know they're happy and proud of you".

I read something about how psychics learn how tonread micro clues in their clients and cleverly spin stories based on the vibes they get bacl from the client.

KidLorneRoll · 28/02/2018 23:19

It's really easy. Buy a book, practice a bit and you too can become a fraudulent wanker exploiting people's fears and insecurities.

Fucking lying arseholes, the lot of them.

donquixotedelamancha · 28/02/2018 23:34

I wonder what would happen if we all started reporting these people to the police? It seems a pretty clear case of fraud by false representation under the 2006 act (IANAL).

It's really easy. Yep. Lots of jobs give you chance to practice cold reading. It's a lot easier with credulous fools which, by a happy coincidence (if you are a thieving git), most of the people who visit psychics are.

2rebecca · 28/02/2018 23:35

Agree with the other responses. They're snake oil peddlers so anyone can do it if they enjoy conning people. A minority believe they have a gift and are deluded but most make general statements and pick up clues from people's replies and how they're dressed/ speak etc

DalekDalekDalek · 28/02/2018 23:46

One of my friends got a Wowcher offer for a medium. She phoned me and was telling me about all the things this medium had told her about herself via email. It literally took five minutes on Google to find that all the "amazing" things she knew were available to any idiot with an internet connection.
They're basically just crappy con-artists scamming vulnerable people out of money.

Solly76 · 28/02/2018 23:53

I go to psychic nights, mainly for the card readings which I do like. Some of them claim to be mediums too, which I can't stand. Even card reading takes a long time to master to be at the skill level to be charging for readings. I can read tarot but wouldn't dream of charging certainly not until I'm more practiced.

They are good at picking up on mood, and other cues like previous posters mention.

I got told that 'spirit' was telling her I would get married this July 12th. That's impossible as I'm still legally married, but separated and divorce won't be through by then. Besides there's nobody I'm dating let alone anything else. The reader had seen I was not wearing a ring and played on the fact that many women want to be married. I got told I had a child in spirit who never made it to the earth. Not to my knowledge I don't. Full of BS

They get away with it because they have to use a disclaimer stating it's for entertainment purposes only, so it's not fraudulent. Some psychic gifts are fine like card readings. Mediums I'm more concerned about as there are a lot of people who find it hard to cope with the loss of loved ones and will spend serious money with mediums trying to make contact. Easy to be exploited. I saw a lot of it when I was with a spiritualist church. I found it really sad. The desperation was oozing off the congregation, each hoping for that message from their loved ones.

cista · 28/02/2018 23:54

By law, they have to advertise their services as "entertainment". Grin

Solly76 · 28/02/2018 23:55

So it's not legally fraudulent if they use the disclaimer, though morally questionable.

tinkywinky2018 · 01/03/2018 00:45

Anyone can become a "psychic" at any time. Since psychic means con artist, all you have to do is decide to start defrauding people and do it.

Clem7 · 01/03/2018 01:21

It’s just like deciding to be a thief I suppose? Quite easily done.

RealityHasALiberalBias · 01/03/2018 01:31

I don’t follow you Solly, are you saying card readings are real? How are they real?

whywhywhywhywhyyy · 01/03/2018 01:42

I'm becoming a psychic right now. You're all going to get bored and go to bed soon.

Tenner please.

DalekDalekDalek · 01/03/2018 01:48

"I'm becoming a psychic right now. You're all going to get bored and go to bed soon."

How did you know? Shock

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 01/03/2018 02:35

Because nobody is psychic, so anyone who wants to can pretend to be one.

BeverlyHillsBillie · 01/03/2018 02:42

Some psychic gifts are fine like card readings. Mediums I'm more concerned about as there are a lot of people who find it hard to cope with the loss of loved ones and will spend serious money with mediums trying to make contact.

I don't understand this attitude. If you believe that there is such a thing as a 'gift' to read Tarot then surely that's coming from the same place as the 'gift' of being a medium?

You either believe people can see into your future and your past or you don't. Whether they do it by interpreting the cards you turn or by claiming to have received a message from great Uncle Kenneth, what's the difference?

whywhywhywhywhyyy · 01/03/2018 02:56

A dead relative of yours told me DalekDalekDalek! You know the one, they're dead, they died a while ago... in some circumstance or another...

Grin
UnmitigatedBollocks · 01/03/2018 03:00

You can’t. But neither is anyone born psychic. It’s all bullshit.

HuskyMcClusky · 01/03/2018 03:26

Load of shite, peddled by people who can’t be arsed to do actual work for a living.

turnipfarmers · 01/03/2018 03:53

You wave a magic wand and you are one.

mumtoriver · 01/03/2018 04:31

I believe in them. Some but not all. Psycuc told me i was pregnant before i knew. Would only have been 2 weeks this was after 1yr of trying no sign of bfp. Same psycic told my mum i was trying but that it wasn't going as planned . We were looking into fertility treatnent (just referred) but it would come to that (see first point) she also accurately predicted when baby would be born too.

comfortandjoy · 01/03/2018 04:36

Because it's all made up. I know an elderly woman that does readings, a family friend. I think she believes she's actually doing something psychic. People find her ad and pay her. Nice cash in hand to top up her pension.

steff13 · 01/03/2018 04:47

It happens if you get hit in the head with a coconut. Same with amnesia.
