to not understand how you can just ‘become’ a psychic

OK so I went to school with a girl who I still have on FB. She has always been heavily into MLM, until her most recent one failed and she took herself off social media until yesterday when she posted this message

‘From tomorrow I will be offering psychic readings. I have been practicing on family and friends to gain more confidence and light. Going forward this will be part of my light work and so the price for this will be £10 per reading’

And so many commenters are lapping it up!

She’s so irritating but so fascinating. I don’t know how she makes money from this though, how are people this gullible? And wtf is light work???

I’m clearly doing something wrong working!

You can't help if you flinch when they get something right. Just because you don't drop your chin to your chest doesn't mean your surprise isn't visible in your face. Most people can't consciously control their pupil dilation.

And most people who go to a psychic want to believe so they won't work hard to mask their feelings anyway.

Some psychics know they're making it up Surely all of them unless they're mentally ill and having visions and hearing voices? I can't fathom someone actually believing they're psychic. That they have supernatural powers.

I saw a woman in a pub once swinging some sort of pendant on a chain and asking people to Ask the Crystal random inane questions like Will I fall in love, will I get promoted? She was clearly moving her wrist to make it move. She must have thought everyone was stupid.

willdoitinaminute · 01/03/2018 19:14

I asked this question about a woman I know who does readings. Jokingly, I wondered if she went to psychic school and guess what she did! Maybe I’m psychic too?

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 01/03/2018 19:17

You can’t, you can learn the skills to become cold readers.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 01/03/2018 19:19

Ha ha psychic school none of the teachers have to introduce themselves as the pupils already know their names. Setting homework's a doddle, the teacher just has to visualise the work sheet and transfer it by telepathy. Saves a fortune on photocopying.

@MrsHathaway - in fairness, my only experience is from about 20 years ago. She wouldn't let me speak - not just me, I think she did that to everyone! - and she had her eyes closed.

I went in with all suspicions and I always say, holding down a job, for me, has always been like a performance task, constantly flipping acting, so yes, I appreciate a lot of people won't go with my kind of approach.

My mum wanted to see a psychic when her sister died and I advised against it, partly because my mum was so upset and a classic case of a victim - not like me wandering off to one on a holiday because I was curious (and abroad it was very cheap, less than a cocktail would be here).

Riverside2 · 01/03/2018 19:21

oh and she didn't ask questions - it was news to me when I got home and found that I had seen someone who operates this way.

in fact most people are quite puzzled when I tell them how she did her thing.

Riverside2 · 01/03/2018 19:22
  • sorry it was news to me that psychics ask questions

don't need a psychic to tell me I shouldn't multi-task....

FrancinePefko · 01/03/2018 19:25

This has happened to me!
I know EXACTLY who the next poster will be and what they will say...

MrsHathaway · 01/03/2018 19:30

Have you seen Team America: World Police?

BuggeringNora · 01/03/2018 19:31

You can indeed go to Psychic College......

FrancinePefko · 01/03/2018 19:35

Gosh darn it to heck. My psychicness has gone again.
Pshaw.

TigerDragonMonkey · 01/03/2018 19:42

There's a great book on this called 'Paranormality'. It uses psychological principles to rationally explain common paranormal experiences. One explaination for people genuinely believing they are hearing voices from beyond (without being mentally ill) is self-hypnosis. You can be utterly convinced you are hearing things (if you are very hyponotizable!), and be making it up at the same time.
However I doubt that is the case for the average 'psychic' peddling readings for £10 a go....

GrannyGrissle · 01/03/2018 22:36

She is Unreasonable for saying 'going forward'. Well obviously, you aren't going to go backwards into the past or sideways down a wormhole. Sets my teeth on edge.

Andrewofgg · 02/03/2018 11:31

BuggeringNora Thank you for that. I have always known that there is one born every minute but I am amazed to learn that there are enough of them to keep a college going. You have lightened up my day!

UnmitigatedBollocks · 02/03/2018 11:47

That “college” 🙄

Tbh if you’re stupid enough to waste money on that sort of thing you almost deserve to get ripped off.

Andrewofgg · 02/03/2018 11:52

UnmitigatedBollocks Please omit the word almost and you will be spot on.

UnmitigatedBollocks · 02/03/2018 11:53

Yeah true.

BuggeringNora · 02/03/2018 19:21

Lol, glad to have been of service. I have to admit, I do know someone who's been there, (several times!). She raves about it, but she's a total idiot with more money than sense.
