To be annoyed at the school letting the children play in the snow all afternoon?

Most schools in our local area closed today due to snow but DD's primary school stayed open. (Fine by me)

DD (year 2) informs me that they had no lessons at all this afternoon and spent most of the time out on the field (so over 2 hours)

Apparently lots of children were being taken out as the day progressed, so I guess it got to a point where the teachers didn't see the point in carrying on with normal lessons.

AIBU to think that in sub zero temperatures this is too long for little children? I know that they're obviously going to play in it at break and lunch but I'd like to think that on the whole they are in a warm classroom when they're at school.

Ah reminds me of when I was little! Lived in Bournemouth then so hardly saw much snow. School was open but it was really snowy (by our standards).

The school had secretly asked our parents to send in change of clothes and snow gear. They got us all dressed but told us nothing, still saying nothing we were marched to the local park (small school, only about 40 of us in the primary) when we were literally released Grin I still remember, was about 6 or 7, how funny it was seeing all the teachers acting like kids and making snow angels and the headmaster started a snowball fight Grin

Then it was back to school where we got changed and Mrs.Godwin the school secretary had made hot chocolate for everyone. One of the best days ever!

Of course that was the early nineties, so health and safety probably wouldn't have that now Wink

Of course YABU. Outdoor play is just as important as indoor play. Playing in the snow is a wonderful activity. They develop social skills, large motor skills (walking/runnimg on snow and forming snow balls), fine motor skills. They experience a different season, how it feels etc. They learn team work (snow ball fights) and consequences have actions (how to make snow angels). They learn science/gravuty (sledging down hill on bin bag). Besides all that, it's fun and kids need.fun. There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. As long as they're wrapped up it's fine and good for them! And I know this from studying early childhood in uni and having worked in a nursery. Outdoor play in all weathers is good for them. It's a pity we don't follow the Scandinavian countries approach

Did you rtft Rabbity?

PhelanThePain · 01/03/2018 10:11

My grandparents wouldn't be ashamed of me. They saw siblings disabled through illnesses like polio and measles. I think they'd be pleased that I vaccinated DD and did my best to keep her healthy.

Polio and measles are nothing to do with an afternoon playing in the snow! Confused what on Earth makes you think they are? Have you just decided that outside is where the illnesses are?

PhelanThePain · 01/03/2018 10:12

I’m sure your grandparents even played outside in snow after their siblings got ill.

I despair at the evolution of humanity when I read posts like this. Let's hope the kids grow up to be much more awake and alert to enjoy life and have fun without divvies writing posts like this.

IllustriouslyIllogical · 01/03/2018 10:18

Christ, I can still remember a glorious afternoon on the school fields with hundreds of kids making huge snow mountains, snow men, huge snowball fights - one fantastic one where it was pretty much all the staff (grumpy ones, dinner ladies & all) vs the kids.

It's the stuff memories are made of & I'd be so happy if my kids got to experience something similar.....

bellie710 · 01/03/2018 17:29

God I would be complaining if they didn’t play in the snow!!

Butchmanda · 01/03/2018 17:30

Sounds delightfully old fashioned and wonderful! Much better than being cooped up inside!

bellie710 · 01/03/2018 17:31

You do realise you don’t catch a virus from playing on the snow?!?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/03/2018 17:35

Thread moved on Bellie. Like yesterday.

I’m so glad our school have let em out in the snow when most of the rest of the country are having snow days! Is lovely they can all hang out n play with their friends & make the biggest snowmen I’ve ever seen!

tworonnies1957 · 01/03/2018 17:37

Your kid /kids must so glad to get away from you if you act like that and want stop them having a a bit fun with there class mates in the snow

Thisisnotreallymyname · 01/03/2018 17:39

Yes YABU , miserable so and so.
One day playing in snow is heaven for children and one day out of their 12 ish years at school matters not one jot.

Hammer66 · 01/03/2018 17:40

For goodness sake - children should be playing! That’s what they do and learn from doing so! We don’t get this weather often, let them have fun

Our schools are closed, but usually my DS's mainstream school doesn't allow them to play in the snow for health and safety. They have indoor play and lunchtimes when it's snowing. I work with children with disabilities and we are allowed out in it...... depends on the head teacher I think.

Although, I've been out there for 15 mins today and I'm still shivering now, so guess it is cold for littleys

Fionne · 01/03/2018 17:58

Imagine, 2 hours of running around outside in the fresh air, having fun, supervised by teachers!

Just imagine. Crikey they’ll have them up climbing up trees next.

derxa · 01/03/2018 17:59

Are you sure it was over 2 hours I bet it wasn't. Settle class 2 mins Take register 2 mins. Explain that class is going outside and rules of behaviour etc 5 mins Everyone gets ready 10 mins... that's 19 mins already Grin

Biscuit

Snow viruses! 😮

EllenMP · 01/03/2018 18:06

Yes, you are being ridiculous. I'm sure the kids had a blast. I would expect any kids who felt the cold to be allowed inside, but I would be happy that the others were allowed to enjoy this rare occasion. My son's school did not let them out to play in the snow at all, and this has really pissed me off.

flipflop49 · 01/03/2018 18:15

Feel lots of pity for the poor teachers of your dd’s school as they were at school, possibly had hideous journeys in or were anticipating dreadful journeys home. Nearly all schools in my county are closed but the local news had cameras at ‘ one of the very few , if any, schools open in the area and Head was saying how he had decided to open and how resilient they were. All heads I know watching that thought ‘ what a knobber’ for putting staff and families at risk.
I hope you didn’t complain to the teachers, just to make them feel even better about their shite day.

Midge1978 · 01/03/2018 18:16

I don't think the op is being unreasonable. Yes they should be allowed to play in the snow but for hours at a time? It is bitterly cold out there.

OP - I thought you might have a health anxiety. You possibly should have mentioned that in your original post so hopefully you wouldn’t have been so mocked and people would have had more sympathy. Your dd will be fine. I would recommend CBT for anxiety. Good luck
