To exile DH for bringing back margarine instead of butter?

Sent DH to do the shopping (I know, I know) as I was bogged down with something. To be fair to him, he managed to do pretty well. Except he's brought back Margarine instead of the Butter I asked for. He thought he was doing a good thing because it was "cheaper".

AIBU to exile him and give him the cold shoulder for the foreseeable future? Margarine just isn't as good, is it? What am I supposed to have on Crumpets?!

Plant based yes, but also bleached, deodorised, heated to very high temps, coloured .... so no, it really isn't better.

Oldraver · 01/03/2018 16:57

I hate it in sandwich shops when they ask if you want butter and you get marge. Really it's the lies I can't stand

There is a bakery near us that prides itself on 'proper' bread not artificial like the supermarkets, they may of used the word artisnal...

The bread is nice...so that's why I'm surprised they have the most horrid looking cheap shit wafer thin ham and the basic Aldi spread which they call 'butter'

SisterNotCis · 01/03/2018 17:03

Much healthier, margarine.

No and no again.

I'm so confused by all the different choices. Dh and the dc eat benecol. I have lurpak spreadable. The kids really would eat anythjng as they eat so little of it. after MIL spread it so thickly on their sandwiches it put them off so now I'm wondering what is the best stuff to use for sandwiches, baking, on jacket potatoes etc.

midlifecrash · 01/03/2018 17:07

How is it possible to actually marry someone and not know that they do this. There should be a checklist

CuntentWarning · 01/03/2018 17:09

I prefer spreads, finding butter to be utterly minging Grin

AnnaMagnani · 01/03/2018 17:22

Year the best thing to use is anything but margarine.

Your kids are not at risk from their high cholesterol, they are kids. DH can have his Benecol for himself.

Everything else - butter or olive oil according to the recipe. Yum.

YearOfYouRemember · 01/03/2018 18:22

AnnaM I'm not worried about the kids cholesterol it's more I assumed they'd use my lurpak. Is everything in a tub margarine then?

SiliconHeaven · 01/03/2018 19:15

lots of people buy and use margarine though, mustn't they, or they wouldn't sell it?
I miss the distinctive taste of anchor butter when it used to be from New Zealand

Winebottle · 01/03/2018 21:45

How can a grown man make that mistake? I learnt that lesson by the age of 5. He must have had sensible women doing his shopping for him his entire life.

jmh740 · 01/03/2018 22:20

I may have to disown 8 year old ds who will only eat I can't believe it's not butter.

APontypandyPioneer · 01/03/2018 22:47

LTB!
I mean, honestly. Margarine. How very dare he. Hmm

splendide · 02/03/2018 08:09

I usually get olive oil spreads - are they OK?

Spreadable butter is just butter plus oil isn't it?

Rosiie · 02/03/2018 08:16

Well of course it's cheaper, it's not as good 😂

GrannyGrissle · 02/03/2018 08:19

Yuk. At least he's shown his true colours so you can get your ducks in a row and LTB. What a vile man he is. Flowers

TheDailyMailIsADisgustingRag · 02/03/2018 08:23

Ugh yanbu. Margarine is filthy stuff. Fair enough if you want plant based. Use olive oil. No need at all for margarine. I don’t think it’s healthier than butter either.

Situp · 02/03/2018 08:25

We need a spewing emoji!

Definitely LTB.

fleshmarketclose · 02/03/2018 08:32

H brought me Willow which is margarine masquerading as butter. He didn't do it again as I used it solely for him until it had all gone Grin

TheClitterati · 02/03/2018 08:33

It's debatable if margarine is healthier than butter. Ive never eaten it.

OP so sorry your DH is a dick GrinGrin

Hope you make it through.

theredjellybean · 02/03/2018 08:39

LTB... In fact put his vile devil's bodily fluid margarine in a black bin liner, with his possession on the front lawn and change the locks...

Seriously you could use marg for cooking some cake or biscuits or something, it's not as nice as making things with butter but it's OK ish.
I hate waste so couldn't throw it away..

But my dp would be back out in the snow buying butter right now

Badcat666 · 02/03/2018 08:40

Make him stand outside in the cold by a busy road with a sign round his neck saying "l bought margarine instead of butter and this is my punishment". He'll soon learn not to buy that processed crap again.

I've seen how marg is made.....mgavomits

Littlewoo · 02/03/2018 08:53

Eurgh, marg is just so horrible. I remember my mum used to buy that big tub with sunflowers on it, vitalite I think it was called, it was awful.
My bil buys vast tubs of stork and uses it like butter. Vom! Stork is for baking nothing else, the thought of it on toast makes me shudder.

EmMcK · 02/03/2018 08:58

This is like butter porn

EmMcK · 02/03/2018 08:59

Dammit. I meant this is like proper butter porn - I am just wishing I could taste test them all

My husband grew up thinking that Margarine was butter.
I have retrained him and now he has realised the error of his ways. We only eat butter.
My 11 year old actually said once that she thought her sandwich was off at SIL's house. I had to sit her down and have the margarine talk. It was difficult but we got through it with little embarrassment and now she knows the facts of butter life and is well prepared.

The only reason I would ever buy marge is Stork for baking (I make large batches for school events so need to reduce production costs and Stork doesn't affect flavour) but the butter icing is exactly that. Butter. It's expensive but you simply cannot make butter icing with margarine.
