To tell nursery to stuff world book day where the sun doesn't shine?

They sent an email out 10 minutes ago to say they want kids to dress up for world book day tomorrow. Seriously?
It wasn't mentioned in any newsletters and no one has mentioned it at pick up times this week. DD is 2, supermarket costumes nearby start age 3-4 and she wood have no bloody idea why she was dressing up!
I could stick some fairy wings on her or I could drop her off as usual and point out that they didn't give any notice at all. Which would you do?

Tbh my ds has costumes because he likes dressing up (5yr old) and I still find it a ball ache. I’m hoping School is closed tomorrow because I can’t be arsed with the walk up the hill slipping all over the place! Plus, then no fights over what sodding costume

Just please remember it is going to be cold! Used to be a dinner lady and the number of kids at school dressed in thin flimsy crap in the depths of winter for these dress-up days was phenomenal!

(Princess dress and plastic high-heels anyone - JUST those items and underwear - minus 4C and hailstones)

SandunesAndRainclouds · 28/02/2018 18:19

Our school is promoting bedtime stories so they’ve asked children to come in pyjamas and dressing gown with a warm layer underneath and their favourite bedtime story. I thought it was genius!

Some easy ideas on here

YANBU. DSs school once gave us about 16 hours notice to find a scarecrow costume.

We didn't have anything scarecrow like, apart from a couple of shorts that were fairly expensive, so no chance were they going to school to be lost or ruined.

Dressing up for WBD has become ridiculous. Luckily SIL buys the kids costumes every year for Christmas, so he's going as a giraffe tomorrow Grin

Isn't world book day in late April?

For the rest of the world yes.
But in the uk that usually falls in the Easter holidays so we have ‘world book day’ on a different day to the rest of the world making it even more sodding pointless.

DickTERFin · 28/02/2018 18:24

What are your drawing skills like?

I’ve made a Lola mask (a bit boss eyed and the face shape is wrong but I’m no artist) for you five year old which she can hold on a stick and then she is just going to wear some brightly coloured clothes, job done.

Charlie and Lola are quite easy if you have a flowery dress and hair clips or plain long sleeved white tshirt (just write Charlie on it- sorted!)

Thirtyrock39 · 28/02/2018 18:31

Sorry hadn't seen other Charlie and Lola suggestions!! One year I also attatched yellow wool to a hair band which took ten minutes and looked hilarious
I like the dear zoo idea of an animal outfit or tshirt

GrumbleBumble · 28/02/2018 18:33

Say she's Little Miss ...... Whatever her character is

ReanimatedSGB · 28/02/2018 18:49

Oh ignore it, it's all bollocks anyway. And both supermarkets and playgrounds are full of kids dressed as characters from films, comics and TV shows, so there is really no point in bothering.

I have never gone in for costume-making, either. I have no interest in it. Some people love it and good luck to them, but I just don't engage in 'look what a wonderful mother I am' wifework wank.

I got my son a Roald Dahl Tshirt with a Quentin Blake illustration on it. I bought it big about 4 years ago and he has worn it every year. I have had to stretch it over the back of a chair so that he fits into it tomorrow... but he is Yr6 so this will be the last time anyway.
Before that, he had a red & black striped tshirt so he went as a Dennis the Menace for about 3 years.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 01/03/2018 08:37

I actually felt guilty this morning when I dropped DS off - all the nursery staff had gone to so much effort and put together amazing costumes. DS was in awe!

Maybe next year I will try a bit harder.

My DD was crying this morning because her school was closed and she couldn’t dress up. I’m hoping they rearrange it for another day ☹️

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 01/03/2018 10:00

They really do seem to enjoy it. I saw dozens of little witches and wizards battling through the swirling snow this morning holding onto their hats.

I was always Pippi Longstocking. Stripey tights and plaits. Bingo.

123bananas · 01/03/2018 10:14

I laughed when I got the nursery world book day text about children having to come as chicks or chickens.

Ds is autistic no chance, plus completely impractical when we have 5 inches of snow.

I wish it could just be about books and storytelling rather than dressing up. It seems like every other day is a dress up day now, I can't keep up.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 01/03/2018 10:16

Bear in mind they deliberately give late notice so only time for simple costume from things you already have, rather than making something elaborate over the 3 weeks you knew about it! Tinkerbell or Lola sound good options :)

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 01/03/2018 10:18

DS's key worker was dressed as Cinderella, DS will be even more in love with her now.

I thought of you blackberry when I saw the good costumes this morning - you are clearly not alone in your creative endeavours!

MrsElvis · 01/03/2018 10:20

There are dozens of Mr men or Little miss... whatever - sunshine and just dress her in something yellow with bunches

ReanimatedSGB · 01/03/2018 19:56

It's fine if you and your kids love it, but plenty of kids hate dressing up and plenty of parents have other things to do and/or no money to spare for costumes. There are still some people who think that parents, particularly mothers, have endless amounts of money, time and enthusiasm for fancy dress and that they are somehow failing at parenting if they don't want to do it (even when the kids themselves are not interested.)
