To tell nursery to stuff world book day where the sun doesn't shine?

They sent an email out 10 minutes ago to say they want kids to dress up for world book day tomorrow. Seriously?
It wasn't mentioned in any newsletters and no one has mentioned it at pick up times this week. DD is 2, supermarket costumes nearby start age 3-4 and she wood have no bloody idea why she was dressing up!
I could stick some fairy wings on her or I could drop her off as usual and point out that they didn't give any notice at all. Which would you do?

Fairy wings are fine. It's just a bit of fun for the kids.
A lot of people seem to get rather excited about world book day but you don't have to if you don't want to. Your daughter will just enjoy wearing something different for the day.

LittleMyLikesSnuffkin · 28/02/2018 17:14

She’s 2. seriously chill out. Like you said she won’t have a clue about it anyway so not really a problem.

I’m with you on the late notice but as she gets older and goes to school you’ll get used to lack of notice for these things and also when your ever so helpful DC decides to change their fecking mind at the last minute about what to dress up as.

Ffsnothingworks · 28/02/2018 17:14

They probably had other parents asking if they were doing it because of an older sibling doing it at school, and thought about giving the nursery the option too. I wouldn’t worry about it.

hidinginthenightgarden · 28/02/2018 17:17

I would happily make the costume blackberry given the time. A supermarket is the next best thing given no time but they don't stock her size.
I can't think of a character other than nanny plum which is a cartoon really. And no nice dresses are going near nursery! Grin

Lol at making a costume. I work full time, have a long commute and even if I had time am barely capable of sewing on a button.

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 28/02/2018 17:23

My Dcs school used to be like this, but the lAst year they give us 4 days notice, which in hindsight isn’t much better. But at least it gives you time.

Vanillaradio · 28/02/2018 17:24

Does she not have any t-shirts with a book character on (or even Minnie Mouse or Peppa Pig, Disney Princess etc as they are in books.... ?) . My 4 year old will be off to nursery in his Gruffalo t-shirt tommorow! Which is pretty much what he's done every year at nursery. May have to get more creative when he's at school but he's really not a fan of dressing up!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/02/2018 17:25

Fairy wings, and tell them she’s Tinkerbell - job done.

Marmite27 · 28/02/2018 17:26

Ours dropped it on us on Monday.

Luckily there’s a giraffe costume in the dressing up box and we have a copy of ‘pardon said the giraffe’.

Job done.

Guardsman18 · 28/02/2018 17:28

Tinkerbell in Peter pan with her wings? She's only 2!

NSEA · 28/02/2018 17:28

For Roald Dahl day my Nursery gave 2 weeks notice and several reminders and posters up. On the day I sent my son as bfg. No other kids were dressed up. Not one. I wouldn’t bother again

RainbowGlitterFairy · 28/02/2018 17:29

stick her in jeans and a long sleeve top and put her hair in a pony tail with a bow. sticky label saying Biff (Biff and Chip)

or stick her in leggings and a dress, couple of pretty clips in her hair and a sticky label saying Lola (Charlie and Lola)

Guardsman18 · 28/02/2018 17:29

Sorry @genius. Too late!

BeyondThePage · 28/02/2018 17:31

"I forgot"... when dropping child off

dadshere · 28/02/2018 17:32

Isn't world book day in late April?

Sammysquiz · 28/02/2018 17:44

Just don’t do it, she won’t be expelled. She won’t notice and I’m sure nursery won’t give a shit.

YoniHuman · 28/02/2018 17:45

Just bung the fairy wings on her normal nursery clothes and say she's the tooth fairy. Tooth fairies feature in plenty of books, you don't need to be specific.

HootenannyHouse · 28/02/2018 17:49

It's crap they didn't give you more notice but almost every child based setting does it so be prepared for the next ten years at least!

Darkbendis · 28/02/2018 17:49

Snow day tomorrow, all schools and nurseries are shut so phew no costume worries for us!

Justgivemesomepeace · 28/02/2018 17:50

Mines wearing normal clothes and a badge that says Harry, and he will carry a bucket full of dinosaurs. Easy.

Sandsnake · 28/02/2018 17:55

DS also two and goes to a private nursery. They gave us plenty of notice but I am a curmudgeon and we’re not doing it. He won’t know (he’s a reecent two) and it would mean making something. I figure that we’ll have years of it to ‘look forward’ to once he goes to school.

Update - just read Tawdry’s post and DS will be wearing some of his many Gruffalo clothes tomorrow. Thanks!

Chienrouge · 28/02/2018 17:57

I sent mine into pre school with their favourite book. In normal clothes. I think that’s more suitable for ‘world book day’ than fancy dress.

crackerjacket · 28/02/2018 17:57

PJ'S and pretend she's at a sleepover.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 28/02/2018 18:01

Fairy wings are good. Do ask them why they sent the email so late too.

Ellendegeneres · 28/02/2018 18:11

What about princess holly??
