I like porridge and after reading several threads on here, have swapped my usual bread based breakfast for porridge. Every fucking time without fail it boils over. I make it in the microwave at work (and yes, I clean it up). This morning, I watched it like a hawk, stirring every 30 seconds. It STILL boiled over! There's a reason people use Oats so Simple.

At the weekend I use a pan on the hob, low and slow, but can't do that week days. I think I've found my reason why I stopped having it!

You need a bigger bowl. Or less porridge. That way the porridge has more room to expand before spilling over the sides.

scurryfunge · 28/02/2018 08:41

Slow cooker overnight?

Ansumpasty · 28/02/2018 08:41

Use Readybrek Grin

EggysMom · 28/02/2018 08:42

Use a huge bowl in comparison to amount of porridge/milk. Stop and stir every 30 seconds. Works for me - it climbs the sides but doesn't actually over-spill.

scurryfunge · 28/02/2018 08:42

Sorry, just realised you want to eat at work.

anotherchangetomyname · 28/02/2018 08:46

Use Readybrek

Envy < not envy

I already use the biggest bowl I can fit in the works microwave.

Bin it off and have a chocolate croissant Grin

Namethecat · 28/02/2018 08:50

Could you make it the night before at home, put in fridge. It will absorb a fair bit of milk over night. In the morning just add some more milk before putting in microwave to heat ( as already cooked will take less time therefore not boil over )

arethereanyleftatall · 28/02/2018 08:50

Put less porridge in it then.

Groovee · 28/02/2018 08:52

How much porridge are you using? I use no more than 40g. Then 200 mls of water or milk.

Patsypedalo · 28/02/2018 08:53

Pyrex glass jug

HamishBamish · 28/02/2018 08:54

If you soak it overnight then it's very quick to make it in a saucepan in the morning.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 28/02/2018 08:54

When I do porridge in microwave I use a pyrex bowl that has quite a wide bottom and not too deep-that way it is spread more evenly and may not boil over?
I have made it lots in microwave and never had this happen-
maybe less cooking time? Some microwaves seem to cook faster/hotter than others not based on scientific study so adjust accordingly?

LemonadeWithACherry · 28/02/2018 08:55

You have to stand by the microwave and when you see it about to boil over shout STOP LITTLE POT, STOP!

SorrySmile

ChristmasCakes · 28/02/2018 08:56

What's wrong with Readybrek? It's just smaller oats.

anotherchangetomyname · 28/02/2018 08:57

And I use 40g porridge (I weigh it out).

Tanith · 28/02/2018 09:01

Lemonade I'm afraid that was just a fairy story designed, like Goldilocks, to encourage the little children to eat their porridge Grin

MsVestibule · 28/02/2018 09:03

Ready Brek is ABSOLUTELY NOT the same as porridge!!!!!

OP, I'm sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but presumably there's a window on the microwave? So 40g porridge, 300ml milk, cook for 1.5 minutes, stir, cook for another 1.5 minutes, watching it like a hawk for the last minute. Take it out of the microwave when you see it rising.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/02/2018 09:04

Oh! I just bung mine in for a minute, take it out stir, decide if it needs more mile, add chopped apple and cinammon (or marmalade) and throw it back in for another minute then wander off and eat it.

It has never boiled over! Am I doing something right? [Smile]

ChristmasCakes Readybrek is vile, I think the oat flour that makes it 'smooth and creamy' makes it utterly inedible. But I have a friend who loves it and finds proper porridge disgusting.

It must be down to the mouth feel, I think!

Chewbecca · 28/02/2018 09:06

Pyrex jug

Blobby10 · 28/02/2018 09:06

Have you tried using proper porridge oats? If you put them in the milk or water the night before you should be able to heat them in microwave next morning

anotherchangetomyname · 28/02/2018 09:11

Ready brek is vile - can't stand it, it's like semolina to me!

I do prep it the night before (soak the oats in milk and water) but I'll try cooking it the night before and reheating it in the morning. Thanks guys.

What you need is a measuring cup, a half cup measure is 40g, two cups of water, three minutes in the microwave, perfect porridge

9kidswhoscounting · 28/02/2018 09:14

Overnight oats?
