I like porridge and after reading several threads on here, have swapped my usual bread based breakfast for porridge. Every fucking time without fail it boils over. I make it in the microwave at work (and yes, I clean it up). This morning, I watched it like a hawk, stirring every 30 seconds. It STILL boiled over! There's a reason people use Oats so Simple.

At the weekend I use a pan on the hob, low and slow, but can't do that week days. I think I've found my reason why I stopped having it!

1 cup porridge oats
2 tbsp dried milk
1 tbsp sugar/sweetener

Add 200ml boiling water stir wait 10 mins and volia porridge no mess involved

brownelephant · 28/02/2018 21:58

less milk to begin with.
I use half oats half milk or water, heat for a minute, then stir and add more milk.
advantage is also that it's not as hot as lava when eating straight away.

Ritamills I explained that the microwave has a blacked out window, it's very hard to see it bubbling up until it's over the top.

Ah sorry, completely missed that bit. I’ve never seen a microwave that is totally blacked out so just change that 30 seconds to 10 seconds, keep opening that door.

Wolfys porridge pots for work (the spiced one with pear and ginger compote and the coconut and lime are gorgeous).

Proper porridge in a pan on the weekend (OH makes particularly delicious porridge with flax seeds and goji berries).

Problem solved.

OliviaBonas · 28/02/2018 22:53

Just make loads in a pan at the weekend and eat it throughtout the week.

Gingaaarghpussy · 28/02/2018 23:04

I use the cup method. 1/3rd of a cup of oats 2/3rds of a cup of water. Bung it on the hob, stir until it erupts like a hot mud puddle. Sling it in a bowl. Pour over some evaporated milk. Eat.
My mum used to put salt in hers. Both my boys and I like porridge and she made us some once, didn't warn us either. Bleurgh! Was the opinion of all 3 of us and of course, you can't negate the salt with sugar. 3 disappointed people who had cold weetabix instead. Neither of my boys forgave her for that one.

Gwenhwyfar · 28/02/2018 23:05

Are you using skimmed milk?
Try one of those plastic bowls with a lid.

junebirthdaygirl · 28/02/2018 23:09

Mine boils over if microwave is at full power. So lower power for a little longer.

Feelingchipper · 28/02/2018 23:11

Not an option at work but a really great way of making porridge is on a pressure cooker. Put water in the bottom, put the bowl on a trivet and pressure cook for around 10 mins. Quick pressure release. Lovely creamy porridge that doesn't need to be stirred or watched over constantly. Even better is in the Instant Pot which allows you to set it up the night before and wake up to freshly cooked creamy yoghurt and no washing up other than the bowl you're eating out of.

icelolly99 · 28/02/2018 23:38

I usually do porridge in the microwave for the family so use 250g oats and I've never had a boiling over problem Grin i usually let the oats soak in apple juice and water with a pinch of salt overnight in large plastic bowl then stir in milk in the morning and bung in microwave for 2 mins and then stir probably, repeat 3 times ish.

Put clingfilm over the top. Everything cooks lovely and no spatters. This is what I do as I believe, this was one of the reasons it was invented.

pandorawithtreaclecolouredhair · 01/03/2018 08:27

Until recently, I worked with a woman who let her porridge boil over in the microwave every single working day; she never seemed to get the hang of it, and was forever eating her breakfast from her bowl plus the microwave turntable thing.
This went on for 25 years.

WhataLovelyPear · 01/03/2018 08:39

I'm amazed at the quantities on here! Granted, I only make porridge for one, but I use 4 level tbsp oats and enough milk to just about cover them. Then I microwave it for 2.5 minutes and stir in more milk to cool it down/loosen it up a bit. I do all this in one of those deep bowls that are the size of a small pudding basin. It never boils over. I think it must be the amount of milk, which is a nightmare for boiling up and up in a container. Maybe do what I do, and use less milk in the cooking and add some more afterwards?

Success! I made a batch last night, fridged it overnight and added a splash of mik this monring brefore reheating. No boiling over and lovely lovely porridge. Thanks guys.

I do mine in a thermos flask and use oats and water. Takes a couple of hours, but is nice and hot!

Noregrets25 · 01/03/2018 09:05

Put cling film over it

9kidswhoscounting · 01/03/2018 09:06

You can always warm up overnight oats, I do....
