Why make duvet covers with tiny fiddly buttons!!!

Just argh! Why don’t all duvets come with poppers or at least packs that allow you to see what the fastenings are before you buy?

I can’t help thinking of all the time I could have saved over the years without the bloody buttons.

OP posts:

Because they were invented by a sadist who thought it bad for us to be too contented with our lot. Does that answer your question?

MichaelBendfaster · 28/02/2018 12:12

I've got a Muji one with a zip from about 15 years ago. Much less fiddle than the button ones.

lht22 · 28/02/2018 12:21

Soup
Check them in Ikea before you buy, another set I have has no fastening at all on the duvet cover. It just has a slit at the bottom which stays open, the duvet doesn't fall out but sometimes bunches up.

cartooncrazy · 28/02/2018 12:28

I just bought teenage DS this set from IKEA
www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/textiles-rugs/bedlinen/bl%C3%A5suga-quilt-cover-and-pillowcase-green-art-10393549/

It has zips and is brushed cotton and is super warm and cosy. Only problem is it's made it even harder to get him up for school in the mornings!

TheLastMermaid · 28/02/2018 12:59

Popper machine! Oh you just made my day!

ginch · 28/02/2018 13:44

Amazon have quite a few with zips, even one with a zip all the way round.

DGRossetti · 28/02/2018 14:04

To answer the OP, because it's cheap. The fact it's problematic for elderly or less able householder is just serendipity.

Gave up trying to buy decent stuff (buttonless duvet sets) years ago (quite aside from the appalling selection of patterns) so it's order a pack of zips from Amazon (may have been eBay, it was a while ago), and get to work with a sewing machine.

I did have an idea of a 3/4 zip to make changing duvets easier, but stumbled on MN and "burrito duvet" first - so there's no need now.

Poppers are better than buttons, but DWs MS makes her fingers numb, so it's hard to pop them.

Buttons are good if you loop a string through them into a circle, and tighten it and loosen it by pulling and releasing. Keeps toddlers fascinated for minutes.

Zaphodsotherhead · 28/02/2018 14:10

YY to being able to see the fastenings before you buy! I just bought (in one of those 'cut price' shops) a duvet cover that was, apparently, reduced from £60 to £30, and then to £15 (I wouldn't pay even £30 for a duvet cover). When I got it home it had stupid little poppers. Are you trying to tell me that a £60 duvet cover would have plastic POPPERS?!? For £60 I'd want solid silver buttons at least.

Airbiscuits · 28/02/2018 14:16

You don't want an open ended flap thing: I had a boyfriend who came home drunk once and decided to crawl into the bed from the bottom. I think he thought it wouldn't wake me.
He somehow got between the cover and the duvet and got stuck and in a panic tore his way out.

I was super unimpressed and it certainly DID wake me.

Ofthread · 28/02/2018 15:45

I hate the idea of zips, what if it touches your foot and is cold? Shock

DGRossetti · 28/02/2018 15:49

You don't want an open ended flap thing

Is this Mumsnet, or Viz Smile

Even cheaper than buttons would be something like an envelope closure ? Like an enormous pillowcase ? Surely less fiddly - and better for the environment ?

(Goes off to design one and make a fortune).

DGRossetti · 28/02/2018 15:50

oh,

I hate the idea of zips, Grin

Plastic zips aren't too bad.

UpstartCrow · 28/02/2018 15:51

DGRossetti An envelope/pillowcase closure is the stupid open ended flap thing. Dont do it! You'll end up with Ddog stuck in your duvet cover.

MrsPear · 28/02/2018 15:53

At the in laws the duvet covers have the opening in the middle. No closure at all.

speakout · 28/02/2018 15:56

I always look for the duvet covers with buttons.
The plastic poppers don't last, it's ok if one goes, but if it's two or three you are scuppered,

You can always sew on a button.

Portillista · 28/02/2018 16:07

GummyGoddess, I also have some Dorma ones with zips. Love 'em. If it had to be buttons or poppers, though, I'd go for buttons because poppers never seem to work...

Oldraver · 28/02/2018 17:01

We have a Vertbaudet one with a bi flap on the bottom..it's brilliant for keeping the duvet in place but OH doesn't like it as he likes to kick the duvet away make a mess of the bed

I have also sewn ribbons on the corners of duvets and covers. Some duvets have button holes at the corners anyway (my all seasons ones) which is handy.

relaxitllbeok · 28/02/2018 17:04

My favourite one has ties.

jkl0311 · 28/02/2018 20:09

New dorma bedding comes with zips ffr

Allthebestnamesareused · 28/02/2018 20:21

We have the Ikea one that Rattle posted. Love it.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 28/02/2018 20:23

this here

I am coveting it but the price is just ridiculous!

herishere · 28/02/2018 20:48

Someone get designing! Duvet covers that zip up and have Velcro straps in each corner to hold the quilt in place.

No more backache from bending over and doing up buttons
No more buttons popping off
No more buttons coming undone and leaving a quilt corner poking out
No more quiltless cover at the top cause it's shimmeyed down during the night
Imagine!!!!

RaspberryCheese · 28/02/2018 21:21

YANBU and its one of my pet hates. Why not just put a fucking zip on it??

I noticed that one of out duvet covers had lost 4 buttons - may have been over a while since DH makes bed . What's puzzling me is where are they? They are quite big and I would have seen them when tidying /heard them as they disappeared up the vaccuum hose. Checked the filter of the washing machine (where have rescued coins before)And would have thought would have heard rattle in the drum

Mystery. And thanks for the revelation about zipped duvets, all !
