Why make duvet covers with tiny fiddly buttons!!!

Just argh! Why don’t all duvets come with poppers or at least packs that allow you to see what the fastenings are before you buy?

I can’t help thinking of all the time I could have saved over the years without the bloody buttons.

I have a set from Ikea with zips on the duvet and pillowcases. It's so easy to fasten it up before washing so all the sheets don't end up balled up inside the duvet cover.

SealSong · 27/02/2018 23:10

I have duvet covers from H&M that have no fastenings at all, just open flaps. They drive me mad. I think I'm going to have to buy a poppet machine too!

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 27/02/2018 23:12

I like to sleep with a sheet between me and the duvet, I wish duvet covers and sheets came with ties so I could anchor them together at the bottom, I’m fed up waking in a tangled mess, it would make making the bed so much easier as well.

BananaHarvest · 27/02/2018 23:13

Decent bedding never has press studs, thank goodness. They always melt after going to the laundry. Buttons are much nicer. Big buttons that are sewn firmly in place.

TheRattleBag · 27/02/2018 23:13

I can confirm that this Ikea bedding has zips (I have it on the bed at the moment).

Annoying though, their king size isn't quite the same as Tesco's idea of a king size duvet, so it needed some alteration (it was too wide).

But the zips are fab - on both the duvet cover and four pillowcases. (As an aside - I love how Ikea give you more pillowcases than anyone else!)

IamSpartacusTheGardener · 27/02/2018 23:15

Stop whining!! Fiddly buttons are AS NOTHING compared to losing the duvet making race with the DW.

lht22 · 27/02/2018 23:26

Rattle
That's the one I'm in now, well, the pinkish version. I bought the grey one too after I discovered the zips! I love that Ikea give you 4 pillowcases, I wish every shop did that!

EyeDrops · 27/02/2018 23:38

As someone with a phobia of buttons, that popper machine looks LIFECHANGING, THANK YOU!!!

They never have the fasteners in a convenient or visible place in the packaging, so it's always gutting to find when covers have buttons. Bleugh. I'm definitely going to order the poppers thing so we can change them.

tillytrotter1 · 27/02/2018 23:41

Easy to sew velcro along the opening.

Ennirem · 27/02/2018 23:49

Velcro! On bedding??? Heathen!!! Shock

Neolara · 28/02/2018 00:00

I too have bought a popper machine. It has solved all my stripping duvet issues.

stargazer2030 · 28/02/2018 00:02

Someone has already mentioned Ikea. Zips were a revelation to me. Duvet cover and pillowcases (and there are 4 matching pillowcases so you don't have to buy 2 plain to go with it). can't think why everyone else doesn't do them. Now I buy all my bedding there.

pastabest · 28/02/2018 08:16

Just a warning, the popper machine I linked comes with no instructions, but it comes ready set up for the size of poppers it comes with so no need to fiddle with it to change the size unless you want to do some advanced poppering in the future.

Idontdowindows · 28/02/2018 08:17

I only buy the ones without! Cannot be arsed to put an 8 foot wide duvet in a cover and then fiddle with the buttons!

Earlyup · 28/02/2018 08:20

We actively seek out buttons now as poppers always seem to pop open.

We have a duvet which has buttons in the corners and I assume it's to attached to the cover inside, although never had a cover with anything to attach...

bridgetreilly · 28/02/2018 09:00

Buttons are SO much better than poppers which always melt or pop open.

I have a friend who always stitches buttons to her duvet and tags with buttonholes on the inside of duvet covers to prevent slippage. I keep meaning to do the same, but, well, life...

silkpyjamasallday · 28/02/2018 09:02

I have a duvet cover with a zip and one with buttons, I always end up with my feet inside the cover with the button up one so the zipped cover is always my preference. I don't think I've ever had one with poppers, surely they are even more infuriating than buttons?

MereDintofPandiculation · 28/02/2018 09:58

To keep far end of duvet in place, sew a piece of thick ribbon or tape to corners of duvet (and perhaps one in middle) and sew pieces of ribbon to inside of corners of duvet (and perhaps to middle). If your sewing skills aren't up to it, us safety pins or a stapler. To put cover on, turn it inside out, tie ribbons together in their pairs. Put hands "inside" inside-out cover and grab the two corners (because you're "inside" an inside-out cover, you'll actually be holding the outside). Lift in the air and gently shake cover down over rest of duvet. Stand on a chair if necessary.

PeerieBreeks · 28/02/2018 10:03

Definitely on the side of buttons. Poppers are annoying little fuckers. Zips now, I think that's something I need to try...

lidoshuffle · 28/02/2018 10:03

I replace buttons (yeuk) with zips - you can get continuous zips off e bay for a quid or so a metre.

Even worse than duvet covers with buttons are pillowslips with "decorative" ones. Apart from how horrible they look, you'd wake up with a big button imprint on your face.

Argeles · 28/02/2018 10:03

I bought a pretty duvet set in France in Lidl when I was a teenager for my bed at home. It cost about £4, and has a zip fastening - it is one of the most convenient purchases I’ve ever made!

I used the set for several years, and my parents still have it in their house.

I have no idea why they don’t use zips ordinarily - I’d gladly pay more for the convenience of a zip, if the argument would be that the price of the set would be increase.

Youshallnotpass · 28/02/2018 10:13

I cut them off completely, duvets never fall out of duvet covers. I don't understand the point. I also HATE the way the feel on your feet (Buttons or Poppers - yuck)

agentdaisy · 28/02/2018 10:43

Buttons all the way for me.

Poppers melt on the dryer, get squished out of shape and stop fastening or pop open every five minutes and the quilt falls out. Changing all the beds once a week is a pita enough without having to redo the quilts every morning.

soupforbrains · 28/02/2018 11:54

this Zip revelation HAS CHANGED MY LIFE. and it's payday too.

BRB just popping to IKEA. Grin
