Foods your children eat daily that you NEVER had as a child

As I watched DS(3) gorging himself on blueberries, crabcakes and houmous (yes. On the crabcakes) for his tea, I realised that I never saw a blueberry until I was at least 18. Likewise, despite growing up beside the sea, I never had crab in cakes or otherwise, or houmous.

Now I'm watching Back in Time for Tea, and feeling like a museum piece.

When did we start taking this stuff for granted?!

Isnt it weird how are diets where so restricted and my kids and i eat most things. At least we give them a try.

I remember the first Chinese takeaway opening here must be 30 years ago.God it was great.

MrsKoala · 28/02/2018 11:50

I remember when McDonalds opened on the high street. I'd never tasted a burger or fizzy drinks so i ordered a toasted tea cake and an orange juice when i went to a party after school as it was the only stuff i recognised. I did that at every party there for about 5 years. I looked like an 8 year old little old lady. Grin

KanyeWesticle · 28/02/2018 12:04

I remember my first cherry. Aged 15. I'd only eaten the glace ones on cakes.

ToffeePennie · 28/02/2018 12:09

Rice
Pasta
Brown bread
Strawberries
anything Chinese/Indian or curried
Anything with spices in.
(My mum has ulcerative colitis made worse by spices, chillis, wheat and rice. She’s also allergic to strawberries so we never had anything like this as a child. These days I’m a fan of korma and all sorts of Chinese food and my son has the lot!)

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 28/02/2018 12:14

I remember my first McDonalds too. I didn't like it, apart from the milkshake, but the restaurant was so exciting - fake portholes and everything.

Do they still do "Crewmember of the month"? I used to dream that one day I could have my picture up on that board.

I grew up in a meat and two veg house. Basically vegetables on our table were cabbage, carrots, turnip and potato. Tinned peas, those awful "marrow fat" ones that leaked green liquid onto the plate.

We mostly had mince, stew, sausages and bacon. An occasional chicken. Special occasion roast. Turkey at Christmas.

Fruit was apples, pears, bananas, and oranges. Now and then a tin of fruit salad.

Never had anything "foreign", no takeaways, no fast food. A tray of chips from the chippy once or twice a year. Never ate in a restaurant till I was 16/17.

I didn't even know there was more than one type of lettuce till I was in my late teens. I'd never seen anything other than a garden lettuce.

When my eldest was about 5/6 I was making them a fruit salad and he walked into the kitchen, took a look and said "oh no. Not dragon fruit again!" That sums it up for me right there. It's so completely different for them. My kids have never eaten mince and tatties and think stew is a treat because I was sickened of those dishes growing up.

This week we've eaten fajitas, pasta, curry and I'm considering chicken paprikash for tonight.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 28/02/2018 12:36

Marrowfat peas! We never had them but I remember them from other people's houses.

Thinking about it, what actually were they? Normal peas bloated up somehow? Or another species? Dyed green? Weird.

My mother was fairly unusual where we lived for the 80s and we grew our own fruit and veg, she made jam and chutney, we had things like taramasalata/hummous/falafel that she made herself. I didn't eat curry sauce(or any sauce) from a jar til I left home. I wasn't impressed when I did Grin

BlooperReel · 28/02/2018 15:10

Avocado
Goats cheese
Aubergine
Mozarella
Pesto
Hummus
Nuts were only bought at Christmas time

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 28/02/2018 20:07

A home cooked meal (Mum loved Captain Birdseye)
Pesto (I had never heard of it until I was in my 20's.
Same with Avocado.
Fruit beyond apples and bananas and the occasional orange or pear.
Fresh orange juice
Bagels

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 28/02/2018 20:07

Also Hummus; Falafel and Pita (the Holy Trinity as it's known).

smurfy2015 · 28/02/2018 20:44

@squiggleirl this thread made me think of cans of Squeez concentrate before i saw you mention them, im living up north now but are they still available down south of ireland?

Mrswoollyfromwoollylane · 28/02/2018 20:56

We have things like bagels, different types of pizza, pasta.

Though reading this thread I'm starting to think I was lucky and my mum was ahead of her time.

I was born in 84 and had lots of the things people are saying that they didn't.

We had lots of different fruits and salads, we had curry, it was made from a tinned sauce at the time, but my mum did progress onto homemade later on, we had takeaway curry too. My mum made chilli with rice and we used to have savoury rice with pork chops and veg. We had different types of cheese, tuna, salmon albeit out of a tin.

We did have our fair share of freezer food, and meat out of a tin, and my mum did fry everything in lard until I was about 10, but over all I don't think I was that hard done by!

Mrswoollyfromwoollylane · 28/02/2018 20:59

My mum used to make curry mix it up with rice and stuff it into a pitta, they were divine.

ohtheholidays · 28/02/2018 21:06

Bagels
Pitta bread
Wraps
Homous
Blueberries,Raspberries,Pomegranite,fresh pineapple,Coconuts.

Feta cheese
Mussles
Pizza
Fajittas
Kebabs
Pesto
Risotto
Sweet potato
Plantain
Mango
Sushi,there's probably loads more though.

LongWavyHair · 28/02/2018 21:11

Couscous

APontypandyPioneer · 28/02/2018 21:22

Fruit Corner yoghurts, Philadelphia Soft Cheese, Boursin Cheese and Perrier Water (sparkling water). We never had these and I remember watching TV adverts or seeing them in the shops or magazines thinking how highly sophisticated they were. Blush

My DC shall never know the joy of a Findus Crispy pancake. This makes me happy and sad in equal measure.

MrsSchadenfreude · 28/02/2018 21:33

I gave mine tinned fruit and evaporated milk the other day. They were unimpressed. Grin

We had lots of Eastern European food when I was a child - goulash soup, chicken paprikas, smoked sausage. Our standard Saturday lunch was smoked sausage, sauerkraut and boiled potatoes. We also used to make kefir. My Dad used to grow curly kale and purple sprouting broccoli.

squiggleirl · 28/02/2018 21:34

@squiggleirl this thread made me think of cans of Squeez concentrate before i saw you mention them, im living up north now but are they still available down south of ireland?

I haven't seen them in years....thankfully! It was awful stuff....

MrsSchadenfreude · 28/02/2018 21:35

An ancient aunt in Hungary used to make little pasta pieces for soup and post them to us. She died in around 1978. My mother still has some of the pasta in a jar.

MissEliza · 28/02/2018 21:46

Tinned fruit and evaporated milk is heaven but my dcs think I'm having a laugh if I suggest that for pudding!
The other day I told my dd and her friend that I'd never seen a fresh mango til I was about 18 and they looked at me like I was a moron!

WellWellWellifitisntyou · 28/02/2018 22:07

Brown bread 😂. It was just considered a bit above our station. DM is still sceptical when she sees it in my cupboard. She'll buy the 50:50 but going the whole hog is a step too far!

HamishBamish · 02/03/2018 17:49

Things like red peppers. We had the green ones but never the red.

We did grow a lot of fruit and veg at home though and had a small orchard. I think we ate a relatively healthy if more restricted diet.

Theresasmayshoes11 · 02/03/2018 17:59

Born in 68 and we only went to this one pub/restaurant on my mums birthday.

Dad always ordered gammon and chips for us all. Mum used to chew the gammon snd then spit it into her napkin as she said it was tough! Us kids did too and for years I actually beloved that’s what you did with gammon. Grin

The ‘sweet trolly’ was a delight. Black Forest gateau, trifle, lemon merengue pie Grin

I think my kids ate out with us at least once a week and at least once over the weekend.

So so different now

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 02/03/2018 18:05

Dessert trolleys! I had forgotten those!

Always with Black Forest gateau or Apple pie in Ireland, maybe creme caramel if they were feeling fancy.

Actually I would love any one of those desserts right now...
