Foods your children eat daily that you NEVER had as a child

As I watched DS(3) gorging himself on blueberries, crabcakes and houmous (yes. On the crabcakes) for his tea, I realised that I never saw a blueberry until I was at least 18. Likewise, despite growing up beside the sea, I never had crab in cakes or otherwise, or houmous.

Now I'm watching Back in Time for Tea, and feeling like a museum piece.

When did we start taking this stuff for granted?!

We had peanut butter, and pasta, but pineapple only from a tin and mango never.

On the other hand we sometimes had avocados and olives because my mum was a bit sophisticated. And my dad used to go fishing and then present my mum with gargantuan salmon which she would hack into cutlets, which we would then complain about eating. Ungrateful little maggots - those cutlets would cost a bomb now. The freezer used to be full of them.

Avocado, olives, humous, peppers. My Daughters diet is totally different to mine. I was brought up on fish fingers, chicken nuggets and food like that.

Akire · 27/02/2018 20:58

Oh yes born in 75 so 42. I didn’t think I liked melon till well o to my 30s as only every had it in tinned fruit where it appeared as a rock hard lump.

In fact as a child never had kiwi, blueberries, cherries, fresh pineapple or strawberry’s.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 27/02/2018 21:00

Kiwis! I remember when they were invented! You were hot shit in Dublin if you had a kiwi fruit back then.

So much! My mum was a woman before her time, and combined with them growing their own fruit and veg, producing their own milk (and therefore cream, butter, soft cheese, yogurt), meat and eggs meant that we had very seasonal food with a nose to tail meat philosophy. And wholegrain, home made bread when it wasn't fashionable!

So - bread products that don't go bdoing, non seasonal fruit/veg, processed food, things in tins (we only had baked beans and tomatos), biscuits from a packet, fruit juice, non runny jam, yogurt not made in a bucket, not having the same meat 4 days in a row (roast, cold with jackets, in a curry/ sweet and sour, rissoles/ cottage pie).

Nutella (other chocolate spreads are available).
We had it on holiday in France every year. Never in the U.K, as far as I knew you could only get in France. (See also: Fanta, although that’s a very rare treat for my kids too).

OutyMcOutface · 27/02/2018 21:02

Plain boiled broccoli-in something sure but we never had cooked greens on their own. If greens were alone then they were fresh.

headinhands · 27/02/2018 21:02

Not daily but frequently:

Pasta
Rice
Curry
Fresh fruit
Undiluted milk (dad and mum would water it down)

Janleverton · 27/02/2018 21:03

Grapes. A rare treat - a bunch In the fruit bowl would be stripped to a bare twig in minutes.

joystir59 · 27/02/2018 21:03

Fresh salmon. Salmon came in tins.

joystir59 · 27/02/2018 21:05

Wholemeal bread. Bread was thin sliced Sunburst.

joystir59 · 27/02/2018 21:05

Sunblest

squiggleirl · 27/02/2018 21:06

Oh so many things...

  • soya milk
  • pasta
  • pesto
  • pizza
  • rice with anything other than 1 specific casserole my Mum made
  • orange juice from a carton
  • any cheese other than cheddar
  • burgers in a bun (yes I remember a time before McDonalds!)
  • fresh peppers (growing up they could only be bought pre-chopped and frozen)
  • smoothies (wouldn't have known what they were!)
  • salami
  • hummus
  • breadsticks
  • olives
  • popcorn
  • Chinese food

So many many things. Food in Ireland in the late 70s / early 80s seems like a million years away from where we are now....

TheVeryHungryDieter · 27/02/2018 21:07

Breadsticks. Pomegranate seeds (DS calls them "grandad seeds" and I never tasted one until I was 22). Avocados. Sushi, but DS just eats the fish! We didn't have blueberries or mangoes or fresh apricots.

We didn't eat pasta in our house because my dad hated being force fed tinned ravioli as a child. It wasn't until I came home from uni with a bag of this wonder food that anyone bothered to try it!

Foxsox · 27/02/2018 21:09

Pasta
Dried apricots
Marshmallows
Pom bears
Blueberries
Noodles

Very similar to many above

TheVeryHungryDieter · 27/02/2018 21:09

@squiggleirl you didn't have Sqeez orange juice as a kid? I had those cartons for school in the early 90s and the preservative always tasted faintly reminiscent of the acids at the back of your throat after you vomit. Eurrgh.

It's fresh OJ or water these days.

Actually we didn't really drink water at home. My parents still don't. Tea, squash or milk were what we got.

Twocatsonebaby · 27/02/2018 21:10

I try and keep my dd plant based. So mainly all the fruits and veg.
But a list:
Kale
Spinach

Mainly the only ones

Snowysky20009 · 27/02/2018 21:10

I lived with my Nan mostly until I moved back with my Mum at about 12 (bad move). So never had pasta or pasta sauce (pesto etc) until I was about 12, blueberries, fish except in batter or breadcrumb, steak, mango, wraps, avocado or humous.

Although we did have melon, pineapple, strawberries, kiwi, grapes, tangerines, crisps, chocolate bars, cakes, ice cream, yoghurts, always in the house. Nan was big on fresh fruit, salad and veg. Also crisps, chocolate and ice cream were always there and we could have them when we wanted. Which meant that we never craved them, and they weren't a big deal. I had friends who couldn't wait to come over because of the treats as they were only allowed them now and then. I've taken the same stance with my kids and they don't crave them either. Thanks Nan! You taught me well!!

ruleshelpcontrolthefun · 27/02/2018 21:11

Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries. Ooh passion fruit.

Nuts. Cashews, walnuts, almonds. DD stuffs her sweet face with pecans and brazil nuts.

Real fruit juice. Not from concentrate.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 27/02/2018 21:11

In fairness Squigglegirl there was Calvita as well as cheddar. And easy slices...

I still haven't tasted soya milk.

halfwitpicker · 27/02/2018 21:12

Hummus. Avocado. Pita.

BadTasteFlump · 27/02/2018 21:12

I didn't have a real Indian restaurant curry until I was about 20. The only takeaway I would have as a kid was a Chinese.

Now the DC probably have an Indian Takeaway (or eat in) every month or so - I'm making up for lost time Grin

Hippadippadation · 27/02/2018 21:14

Brioche. My 2 yum it down, but I think I was a teenager before I tried it!

squiggleirl · 27/02/2018 21:18

I remember going to England on holidays and my Dad showing me what a cherry really looked like when it hadn't been glacéd. I was about 9 and has never seen a 'real' cherry until then. I saw an apricot for the first time when I was 16 and on holidays in France.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/02/2018 21:18

Orange juice was a rare treat.

We've just eaten a stir fry for dinner that had water chestnuts, bean sprouts, peppers, ginger, rice wine, soy sauce etc in - most of which I had never even heard of as a kid.

in fact, now I think of it. Almost everything
