To expect MNers to be resourceful enough to just sometimes look elsewhere on the internet for answers to very simple questions?

Instead of starting another thread along the lines of "what colour is red?"

don't backtrack now beany

LadyTophamHatt · 04/05/2007 14:30

I do this all the time.

I'm crap at seraching stuff on the WWW and I ask you lot because it's like asking RL friends.

GiantSquirrelSpotter · 04/05/2007 14:32

Yes.

Mumsnet has more interesting answers than the rest of the WWW!

Fimbo · 04/05/2007 14:34

Juley in EE was shortened from Julian though

SlightlyMadSkyscraper · 04/05/2007 14:37

If you google for some stuff you get really sciency/gheeky/medical answers

Coming to MN you often get a much more 'user friendly' explaination, or translation - even if you are capable of googling effienciently

I have found that on other forums (not parenting ones, but certainly one other forum that I frequent), that if you ask a simple question you'll get nothing (maybe a bit of abuse)unless you've:

a) searched every thread on the forum
b) then googled for the answer

I suppose it's a pain when people keep asking the same old things, but some questions are a bit vague to pinpoint to search terms.

Anyway, I like the often rambling and unnecessary nature of some of the threads on here. It's my new favourite forum.

beansprout · 04/05/2007 19:38

I'm really happy to ask questions on here myself, it's just some of the simpler questions that it really would be quicker to google that make me wonder.

I think it's fabulous that you can keep asking away until you get the answer(s) you want to hear. You don't get that with google!

Blu · 04/05/2007 21:53

I asked about some beetles today. I could have googled, but I feel MUCH happier having learned all the answers from Frogs. It's more like life. I never go to google to find an answer if I think DP will know and he is sitting across the room. I like learning from people. Even if it is the ones inside my computer!

Early on this evening someone posted something about baby rice (oh god don't get me started). I pointed out that baby rice is quite good for making custard or thickening sauces if you have run out of cornflower. Someone else found that useful. You wouldn't get that sort of culinary nouse on google now would you?.....Actually there's a reason for that - no bugger is interested.

It's a well known social maneuovre though - you ask people something to develop friendly relations, they feel valued, they are nice back, the world spins and we all waste entire evenings on here.

If you get really ticked off, you can always direct them here

jojody · 05/05/2007 13:46

I discovered MN while googleing in the first place!

MrsCarrot · 05/05/2007 14:02

Same here, I asked google a few questions and mumsnet was mostly at the top of the list, so I thought I may as well come straight here next time!

RustyBear · 06/05/2007 16:49

This is why we ask MN

americantrish · 08/05/2007 16:48

i think sometimes some MN'ers want some reassurance when they ask a simple question, to see maybe if someone else is going thru it too or similar. and some of us maybe want one on one responses compared to just googling it...

ThreeBluecubs · 04/01/2008 19:43

I'm sure this question has been asked before - could you not have looked in archive?
