To think the cost of food is rising significantly?

Or is it just me? The last few weeks/months when I've been food shopping, I've noticed the cost appears to be going up and up.
I shop mostly in Lidl and Aldi too, so it's not as though I'm shopping in M&S or Waitrose (where I would expect my shop to be costly). It cost me nearly £1 for a pack of six small, unbranded fromage frais. I spent nearly £40 for three of us (one of whom is 3) and it won't last us more than probably the weekend, that was with only buying one pack of meat. No nappies or cleaning products included in that, nothing from the 'magical middle aisles'. All just basic food, some fruit and veg for meals and lunches this week. I used to be able to get away with spending £25 on the top up shop a week/every 10 days, after doing one big monthly shop for about £70. Now it's more like £100 for the monthly shop, and about £40 a week topping up.

If the government didn’t care there wouldn’t be any benefits of any kind.
What has led me to this belief ?? Watching people who do not work, never have and if possible never intend to still walking around . If the government didn’t bestow gifts on them ( benefits ) then they would starve .
But you’re right they probably don’t care a lot about the poor .

SleepFreeZone · 28/02/2018 10:42

I notice no one bothered to comment on my reference to fizzy pop not being food. Once we get to the stage where we cannot genuinely feed our kids staple grains, vegetables and protein we know we are fucked. Otherwise I just can’t sympathise with those lamenting the cost of their weekly basket which includes unnecessary crap and luxuries including booze.

We need to get back to eating in season, eating less generally, growing some bits, less booze. Bloody hell imagine the savings on healthcare if we cut down on obesity and alcohol related illness/injuries. The government must be loving it!!!

Without being able to show my working out (as there isn't any) I don't think the official inflation figures reflect the extent to which prices are really going up.

It's about 3% at the minute, which is high compared to the recent past, but I'm feeling a greater effect than that, and the shrinkflation is getting ridiculous.

Post Bexit we're fucked.

AgnesBrownsCat · 28/02/2018 10:49

Well said sleep . Yes prices are rising , food is expensive to produce and process etc . Everyone wants a better minimum wage but doesn’t want the fall out that comes with that .
Why do people feel entitled to have cheap food ?

user187656748 · 28/02/2018 10:50

Of course governments "care" . However they have limited ability to "control". In Venezuela prices are currently doubling every 6 weeks. That isn't because the government there doesn't 'care'

I can live with being a twonk, but if I couldn’t feed myself I’d sure as heck not stay in London paying extortionate rent

Yes, people who are struggling financially should just move to another part of the country away from homes, jobs and they should magic up the deposit money for a flat and a truck to move their stuff. Easy. Excellent plan.

Why do people feel entitled to have cheap food ?

Hmm

As for the government working to keep food prices down, yes, they've done an excellent job keeping house prices down haven't they?

Valentinesfart · 28/02/2018 10:55

Can you imagine if all the plebs left London? Who'd be there to work in the shops and restaurants and clean the houses of the proper Londoners who deserve to be there?

HarissaPaste · 28/02/2018 10:59

Higher food prices don’t mean people eat less and are therefore more healthy and saving the health service money, it means they eat more cheap crap, as what alternative do they have? Please don’t start about hanging round the veg aisle at closing and batch cooking stews. Not everyone can do that, can they?

AgnesBrownsCat · 28/02/2018 11:03

You’re right Valentine , so much more acceptable to stay in London because you know it’s London , so that the wealthy can continue to take advantage of those who need to do the low paid jobs .
And why do you feel the need to refer to people as plebs?

AgnesBrownsCat · 28/02/2018 11:06

Common sense would dictate you would do something to move if you can’t afford to eat or is it more commendable to make your point and starve ?
Wages can’t be that high or worth sticking around for if you can’t eat .

AgnesBrownsCat · 28/02/2018 11:10

Why do you feel entitled to cheap food Valentine ? An emoji doesn’t give me a lot of information

SleepFreeZone · 28/02/2018 11:11

Harissa the people who are electing to eat crap over food that might fill them up are going to struggle when that crap goes up as it’s going to be taxed in the future as it’s msking people ill. They might be forced to eat basics foods like our predecessors did. Shocking eh.

Valentinesfart · 28/02/2018 11:13

Common sense would dictate you would do something to move if you can’t afford to eat or is it more commendable to make your point and starve

Common sense would tell you that the poverty trap makes it very difficult for someone to extricate themselves from poverty. Common sense would tell you that if it was so easy to get out of the situation, that's exactly what people would do. Common sense would tell you people don't choose starvation over Benidorm. Common sense would tell you that you're embarrassing yourself with your ignorance on this thread.

AgnesBrownsCat · 28/02/2018 11:13

House prices are dictated by market forces . Supply and demand . There are still areas of the uk where house prices are affordable . Probably not in your twenties granted with a couple of kids in tow. The government don’t care because they get their cut in capital gains and stamp duty . And eventually inheritance tax .

user187656748 · 28/02/2018 11:13

Agnes you have the most unusual grasp of basic economics

"I'm struggling to feed my family"

"Oh just walk away from your job and home and spend a fortune (which you clearly don't have) on stamp duty, moving costs etc! Ta dah! solved it for you"

"Food prices are rising and I'm concerned they're getting out of control"

"Oh don't worry the government won't let that happen since they have ultimate power and a magic money pot! Ta dah! solved it for you!"

blueshoes · 28/02/2018 11:14

Why has butter gone up in price so much?

SleepFreeZone · 28/02/2018 11:17

Let me Google that for you blueshoes

If you don't know why a society has an obligation to make sure its citizens are fed I don't think I can explain it to you.

Valentinesfart · 28/02/2018 11:20

They don't even need to move User, just stop all their trips to Benidorm Hmm.

All the homeless of london could just cut down on trips to Benidorm, move north and live like kings!

AgnesBrownsCat · 28/02/2018 11:26

I’m struggling to feed my family ?

Don’t worry about it , something will turn up , just sit tight and wait it out . Don’t try to find more work or more to cheaper housing , so you can have a better standard of living because who will work for the rich . They need you , you can’t leave !!!

Valentinesfart · 28/02/2018 11:32

If you had an ounce of self awareness you'd be so embarrassed right now. I am cringing for you.

sallyandherarmy · 28/02/2018 11:34

I use my local greengrocer (mainly for out of season stuff) butcher (non-halal butcher as I can't eat halal anything), and bakers (NOT Greggs/Birds...an independent one).

I use my local independent high street 'bargain' shop for toiletries/cleaning products/loo paper etc etc.

Iceland, and Heron for basics.

I grow toms, cucumber, peppers, aubergine, chillies etc, in my greenhouse.

I also grow my own spuds, cabbage, leeks, runner beans, broccoli, cauli, etc, and freeze/store most of it.

Can't remember the last time I went to supermarket.

The shops I use are still competitive and I've not really noticed much of an increase.

AgnesBrownsCat · 28/02/2018 11:36
Hmm

People, when a poster writes in a manner that is deeply logically inconsistent and yet consistently mean/spiteful/cruel, it usually indicates that the purpose of the writing is not communication of some idea but, in fact, upset and hurt.

Honestly, don't give them the satisfaction of letting them reach your emotional well-being.

And bear in mind that, since their primary purpose is not enlightenment, communication, debate, or the pursuit/dissemination of information, it's not worth expending too much reason on them, either.

Be happy, people.

"Let them skip their annual Benidorm holiday"

To think the cost of food is rising significantly?
