To think the cost of food is rising significantly?

Or is it just me? The last few weeks/months when I've been food shopping, I've noticed the cost appears to be going up and up.
I shop mostly in Lidl and Aldi too, so it's not as though I'm shopping in M&S or Waitrose (where I would expect my shop to be costly). It cost me nearly £1 for a pack of six small, unbranded fromage frais. I spent nearly £40 for three of us (one of whom is 3) and it won't last us more than probably the weekend, that was with only buying one pack of meat. No nappies or cleaning products included in that, nothing from the 'magical middle aisles'. All just basic food, some fruit and veg for meals and lunches this week. I used to be able to get away with spending £25 on the top up shop a week/every 10 days, after doing one big monthly shop for about £70. Now it's more like £100 for the monthly shop, and about £40 a week topping up.

I do the meal planning, shopping and cooking in our house. Dp and I called in at aldi on Saturday to do a mini shop to see us over the weekend (just some veg and stuff for lunches on monday)and it came to £20- dp had to check the receipt when we got home as he was convinced they'd put some things through twice.

Luckyme2 · 27/02/2018 17:00

Valentinesfart I'm so glad you made that comment as I was just about to say the exact same thing!

Frightfulphysician · 27/02/2018 17:01

I’ve noticed a huge increase in the UK too, I’m currently in Spain for a couple of months and food used to be quite a bit more expensive here but now it’s practically the same (made massively worse by the exchange rate post Brexit Angry ).
The increase in butter prices isn’t really down to Brexit though, there’s a huge European shortage which has caused the wholesale price of butter to double or sometimes triple. Supermarkets have mostly taken the hit so far so butter could get much more expensive than it is at the moment.

gussyfinknottle · 27/02/2018 17:15

No plan to produce gluts of veg. What is going spare and can't be stored over winter will go to elderly in laws or back on the compost pile for next year.
Will grow only what we eat: lettuce , tomato, spuds, carrots, garlic, kale. Sprouts for Christmas and some cabbage. Runner beans because they are pretty.

HateTheDF · 27/02/2018 17:30

I used to shop at Aldi and have found the prices to be similar to Asda. We struggle enough as it is, I already go without breakfast and finding myself eating less and less at lunch now as well or just toast.

We don't go on holiday, we don't have Sky, my phone contract is £13 a month and I need it for work. Rent is through the roof (London), transport costs are so pricey along with bills and food. We have nothing left at the end of the month. Not wanting to side track - that's just for the PP who thinks people who can't afford food go to Benidorm

AgnesBrownsCat · 27/02/2018 17:44

I didn’t say people who couldn’t afford food go to Benidorm 🤨. I said people prioritise luxury items rather than buy good quality food .

Food prices will continue to rise so if I was on the bones of my arse and unable to buy food I’d be looking at making some drastic changes .

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 27/02/2018 17:53

if I was on the bones of my arse and unable to buy food I’d be looking at making some drastic changes

Oh, so you would cancel your Benidorm trip.

Is that what you think some people do? Let their children go hungry just so they can go on holiday to Benidorm?

What an ignorant twonk you are.

TreacleFarl · 27/02/2018 18:08

YANBU I've noticed this and like pp have said the supermarket own brands don't seem to have as much of a selection anymore or have stopped producing some items.

I trying to be as frugal as possible and stick to meal plans with stews, pies, soups etc to make the money stretch. I use Jack Monroe budget recipes for something tasty but affordable on Friday nights.

YY to the price of butter, it is so expensive now and even the supermarket brand is pricey.

user187656748 · 27/02/2018 18:08

I think you're very sensible gussy. If everyone grew a few things it would make a difference to protect from food price inflation.

However I invested a LOT of time (and a reasonable amount of money too) last year and came to the conclusion that certain things simply are not economically viable to grow (although that might change if prices keep going up). Carrots in particular are a bugger to grow unless you have stone free sandy soil, and are still cheap to buy.

Rhubarb on the other hand will last for years and is well worth the investment (if you can force yourself not to take from it in the first year). Fruit canes can also be a sensible financial investment. Herbs are really expensive to buy and easy to grow.

ginghamstarfish · 27/02/2018 18:12

Definitely, and not by just a few percent either.

thecatfromjapan · 27/02/2018 18:14

I used to get really annoyed on threads like this when someone would come on and try telling people black is white and that people's experience was, actually, completely the opposite to what their senses were telling them.

It's actually quite entertaining (in a bleak way) to see those people getting told firmly to fuck off.

Other than that, there's nothing very funny about the situation. I've noticed clothing prices going up, too. Which is less pressing than food. But it's still something I'm noticing.

DenPerry · 27/02/2018 18:22

Yep... it feels like we pay mortgage, bills, bit of petrol and then the rest is groceries. No money for anything else. A small punnet of mushrooms was £1.60 at the shop earlier!

Coulddowithanap · 27/02/2018 18:31

Not really noticed prices go up that much really. 6 pack of peppa pig yoghurts are still £1, loaf of bread I get is £1. Butter may be more expensive but I get it when it's on offer for £1 for 500g. I bought a whole medium size chicken in Lidl last week for £2.99! Milk has gone up slightly.

choli · 27/02/2018 18:32

Living in Boston US, the prices that are quoted as high on this thread seem remarkably low to me. Brexit doesn't affect us yet food prices over the last 5 years seem to have soared. Especially for fruit and veg.

DownAtFraggleRock · 27/02/2018 18:48

I'm in Canada and feel the same way choli

A pound of butter here is $5 - about three quid. A whole raw chicken $13 - so getting on for 8 quid. A loaf of decent bread $3 - nearly 2 quid

and keeps on going up, and up....

DownAtFraggleRock · 27/02/2018 18:49

and that's a cheapo chicken. If you want a happy chicken it's more like $20 or 12 quid

gussyfinknottle · 27/02/2018 18:53

Producing small amounts of organic food whose provenance can be counted in food metres not food miles. I now have the time to garden due to my work set up and find it therapeutic.
Worth it for the doing of it as much as the eating of it.

Jiya1954 · 27/02/2018 18:54

Yes and it's only going to get much worse after Brexit.

UnreasonablyPissedOff · 27/02/2018 18:56

Did you hallucinate it those times, since you must be doing so now?

Helmetbymidnight · 27/02/2018 19:02

After brexit, lots of food stuff will get v expensive.

But people knew this and they voted for it anyway.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 27/02/2018 19:03

Im worried too...im a lone parent with 3 kids....1 at home and 2 teenage boys at uni....when they come home in the holidays the food shopping almost bankrupts me....uni holidays are really long and im dreading them already...

NotWithABang · 27/02/2018 19:17

Oh yes choli I have to admit that food prices in the US do seem even higher than the UK. We visit regularly as we have family and I remember when it used to be cheap to eat out regularly - even places like Denny's seem to have gone up in price now!!
As for people spending their food budget on going to Benidorm Hmm
I can only imagine that poster has absolutely no firsthand experience of poverty, then.

Myuser, might I also suggest growing a bit of your own. Plenty of advice on here and elsewhere about doing it in containers and on the cheap. It's the right time of year.
