AIBU to know what this word means?

Today I used the word 'moxie' in a sentence and in turn the room looked at me like Confused. AIBU or is that an unusual word?

If it was a brand, what would you associate it with?

Don’t know what it means.. sorry!

TenancyTroublesAgain · 26/02/2018 17:28

Never heard it before.

SnowiestMountain · 26/02/2018 17:29

You're making it up! Grin

Anythingforacatslife · 26/02/2018 17:29

Moxie girls are a sort of doll aren’t they?

HarryStylesismycrack · 26/02/2018 17:29

Get up and go, gumption, sassiness. 🤷🏼‍♀️

ThatsWotSheSaid · 26/02/2018 17:29

Confused never heard it

Knittedfairies · 26/02/2018 17:29

I've just googled it, but have never heard of it before.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 26/02/2018 17:30

Penn Jillette called his daughter Moxie Crimefighter Jillette. Means ‘sassy’ I think. Haven’t really heard it outside USA.

EggysMom · 26/02/2018 17:31

Yes, to me it means gumption also, oomph with a bit of cheekiness.

Is it an uncommon word then? I'm in the UK if that gives context.

sirlee66 · 26/02/2018 17:33

Sounds like the couple name for a Molly and a Roxie. Like Bragelina or jedward

HarryStylesismycrack · 26/02/2018 17:33

Reminds me of bugsy malone type films ‘she’s got moxie’. Whenever I hear it I think flapper girls 😂

DownAtFraggleRock · 26/02/2018 17:34

Moxie's is a restaurant chain round these parts

crackerjacket · 26/02/2018 17:35

gumption ain't it?

doesthislookoddtoyou · 26/02/2018 17:35

It's not very unusual if you are well read. It was a soft drink from the 30's.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/02/2018 17:35

Never heard it before.

Surfingwhippet · 26/02/2018 17:36

It's a fizzy drink

iklboo · 26/02/2018 17:36

Yes it means determination & spirit.

Sudafed73 · 26/02/2018 17:36

I stand corrected then Grin. To the PP who knew what it meant, that is the same context I used it in...it was discussed at a presentation for a potential brand name and asked our group what they thought to it...the woman was worried it sounded like a disease lol

doesthis
It was a US soft drink. I don't recall seeing references in UK literature.

I've heard of it, but it's quite an American saying.

Pluckedpencil · 26/02/2018 17:38

Well it rhymes with pixie, which then leads to pox. Neither are good associations I guess!

Pluckedpencil · 26/02/2018 17:38

Poi è

MongerTruffle · 26/02/2018 17:39

It's an informal American word.

HarryStylesismycrack · 26/02/2018 17:39

It doesn’t rhyme with pixie the way I say it! Very definitely rhymes with poxy though.

Pengggwn · 26/02/2018 17:40

It means you've 'got' cool.
