Today I used the word 'moxie' in a sentence and in turn the room looked at me like Confused. AIBU or is that an unusual word?

If it was a brand, what would you associate it with?

I only know it from reading American books set in 30s/40s. Don't think I've ever heard a Brit use it though.

WickedGoodDoge · 26/02/2018 19:03

Sudafed It’s quite bitter. It is more along the lines of Coca Cola, root beer, Dr Pepper etc than orange Fanta, sprite etc, but it really is it’s own flavour. I like to think of my attempts to drinking Irn Bru here as similar to a Brit drinking Moxie. Grin

pandarific · 26/02/2018 19:05

I’d be surprised people didn’t get it - 20s / 30s slang for vim / vigour / boldness in a woman.

wetrebecca · 26/02/2018 19:07

American way of describing a woman with balls I'd say.

I'd like to go get pissed with someone who has moxie. Grin

theEagleIsLost · 26/02/2018 19:14

TheFirstMrsDV Written scene is how I know it - BBC2 Saturday morning/afternoon mixes of b movies, melodrama and absolute classics of my teenage years.

I've read widely but don't remember reading it or hearing it said in conversation only really come across it in black and white gangster movies.

Sudafed73 · 26/02/2018 19:15

Grin interesting - I'm glad I posted lol quite a mixed response!

Moxie Loves is a brand of eye make up remover buds similar to the M& S eye make up remover buds.
They look like a cotton bud but the 'body' between the two ends is filled with eye make up remover and when you snap off the top the other end gets filled with the remover.
They are really useful.

OhBeggerItsMorning · 26/02/2018 21:02

Aye, it's a word I'd be more likely to hear up in the North East of England (where I used to live) than down here in the deep South West, but that might just be because of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet! (I also hear it in my head in a Geordie accent.)

I also remember it from some American shows I've seen, it does look to be a more popular word in the US.

I think it can be an unusual word in some places but a more widely used word in others, maybe it's a regional variation of other words that mean similar. (I still find it odd that sandshoes don't exist here, they are daps but back 'home' hardly anyone says daps. They are also referred to as plimsolls, so I think it depends on where you are as to which word is favoured.)

puglife15 · 26/02/2018 21:08

I think of the tampons first.

Then of retro America.

Then of the meaning of the word.

I don't think I'd use it as a brand name as it's already associated with the tampons... What sort of product was it OP?

Sudafed73 · 26/02/2018 21:15

Another PP was right, it was a clothing brand aimed at young women

Why is anyone surprised that some don’t know it. How can you look up a word you don’t know exists. I’d say it’s a word used in fairl limited numbers of books and if those books are in your interests, you’re not going to come across it.

I’d not heard of it. I won’t be using it. By definitions given here, gumption is a better word for me.

Skarossinkplunger · 26/02/2018 21:49

I know what it means and that it was a soft drink but I have a lot of American Friends.

Bimbler · 26/02/2018 21:53

By definitions given here, gumption is a better word for me.

It's got a bit more sass than sensible gumption.

JamieLannisterToMyBedchamber · 26/02/2018 21:57

I knew what it means.

Also brand-name wise, I know it as a tampon brand. They launched a subscription in the UK, but it didn't take off.

Mum2OneTeen · 26/02/2018 21:58

My teen DD uses MOXIE brand tampons! Grin

stopcryingearly · 26/02/2018 22:00

I’ve heard it a few times, presumed the meaning was similar to chutzpah? There is a fish n chip shop with the name but not heard of a brand.

hazeyjane · 26/02/2018 22:10

Moxie is Carole Lombard, gumption would be more Margaret Rutherford

MrsKoala · 27/02/2018 07:18

Chutzpah! Is the word i was looking for yesterday. It came to me in the middle the night.

puglife15 · 27/02/2018 07:25

If it was a clothing brand I'd imagine it to be along the same lines as Lady V, Joanie etc selling retro 50s clothes.

EdithWeston · 27/02/2018 07:30

I would have assumed it was a nn for the complementary therapy moxibustion.

So it would be a slightly smelly, hippie brand in Europe, or something medicinal in FE Asia

Grilledaubergines · 27/02/2018 11:23

Oh I love the work Chutzpah. If Moxie means the same I may be swayed!

Grilledaubergines · 27/02/2018 11:23

word!

Talith · 27/02/2018 11:26

Reminds me of the banana antibiotic they give kids.

Sweetpea55 · 27/02/2018 11:29

Is it a Liverpool slang word?

Seafoodeatit · 27/02/2018 12:49

I don't think they sell moxie pads anymore, used to have pretty boxes!

I can't remember where I know the word from, probably books. I would have said it means determination/grit.
