To ask you to help me decorate my daughters room? I’m hopeless!

I’ve bought things I think are nice and stuck them in her room but it’s so unfinished. I need new curtains, a rug etc but I’ve no idea what colour to buy? I’m concerned about the pink things all being different shades. Also, I need to put shelves/ pictures up, but where? This really isn’t my strong point so I’m hoping some of you may be able to help.

Pics should be attached. Excuse the bed (DD made it herself) and the bow holder behind the dressing up rail will be coming down.

Unfortunately I can’t paint (we’re in military accommodation)

We let our daughter pick which colour she wanted on the walls (bright pink!) then took her to Dunelm to pick bedding and curtains, we got thick blackout curtains in a complementary pink. Does your daughter have any ideas of what she would like?

Avaricii · 26/02/2018 13:58

How old is DD? And what sort of things is she interested in?

beckslovestimmy · 26/02/2018 13:59

Just seen that you can't paint. You can get lots of different wall stickers online that would add colour and decoration. They can just be peeled off when you've finished with them or fancy a change. Maybe use them to create a feature wall with a theme like woodland, or fairies, butterflies etc and tie in the soft furnishings?

WheresTheHooferDoofer · 26/02/2018 13:59

If you can't paint, perhaps you can make or buy some fabric bunting. I've seen a lot of fabrics around lately, with pastel flowers or animals, etc and you can get two or three with a common colour to make a string. You might be able to find a floral that picks out the main colours on the bedding and furniture.

Fairy lights might also help to personalise the room.

Pinks do tend to blend well, I'd maybe mix pink with a little pale turquoise for highlights.

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/02/2018 14:06

I'd maybe go for something turquoise for the curtains and rug - pick out the colour of the shutters on the dolls house.

And yes, something non permanent for the walls in terms of decals or posters or bunting just to add a bit of warmth :)

How old is your daughter? Mine is 7 and large amounts of her room are now done by her really. She gets posters in magazines she likes and has painted on some cheap canvasses to make pictures for her walls. EVERYTHING is in some shade of pink or other. The carpet and walls are plain cream but I have some large vinyl stickers of a pink tree on one wall. If your daughter is old enough perhaps let her choose and not worry too much if it doesn't all match perfectly. My DD loves her room even if it makes my eyes water!

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/02/2018 14:13

Lots to choose here :)

how about a nice rug?
a bookcase? she could put here bits and bobs on it as well
fairy lights?
i would definitely put some pictures up or hang some ribbon and clip photos of friends/family to it.

personally i would move away from pink curtains and something that will grow with her.

i like the idea of bunting.

spagbol11 · 26/02/2018 14:23

You need bunting, and a nice rug, and a nice lamp

spagbol11 · 26/02/2018 14:23

Cross post

bridgetreilly · 26/02/2018 14:37

Get a rug in a bold pattern with some pink and green in it, same for the curtains. Art for the walls - I'd get things in frames or canvasses that you can take with you easily when you move, rather than wall decals. Shelves on the wall where the dolls' house is, painted in a pretty colour - pale green, maybe?

And then just keep an eye out for pretty things that would look nice in there. Supermarkets have good stuff these days, and even pound shops. You don't have to spend loads, but some bunting or pompoms or whatever would make a big difference.

Also, what about a beanbag chair or something like that to make a cosy reading corner for her?

This would look nice in there: www.dunelm.com/product/patchwork-rug-1000064200

Or this is supercute: www.dunelm.com/product/bird-house-hong-kong-rug-1000096068

bridgetreilly · 26/02/2018 14:42

Blankets! She needs a nice cosy soft blanket that can be folded at the end of the bed, but also to curl up in and read or make a den with or whatever.

FeedtheTree · 26/02/2018 14:45

I think a good sized desk or chest of drawers would help, with a pretty lamp and the dolls house on top of it. Everything being on the floor makes it look a bit temporary.

Adding bunting and led fairy lights would really help. I'd put framed prints along the side wall beside the bed, and add a cosy, tyextured rug in pink for her to step onto when she gets out of bed.

kubex · 26/02/2018 15:03

I would add some shelves above the chest of drawers.

Since you can't paint, I would make a feature out of the window and dress it beautifully with a blind and some patterned curtains.

Have and look at this website www.tinyme.co.uk/wall-stickers - they do wall stickers that are completely removable.

Chuck in a rug, a beanbag and some fairy lights and you're done!

WheresTheHooferDoofer · 26/02/2018 15:45

If you go with pale pastels, you can actually mix the colours, pink, turquoise, blue, green....

Can look really nice, and doesn't have to be too matchy.

Toomanytealights · 26/02/2018 16:22

Some big bookshelves you could take with you, fairy lights etc.

Next always does lively matching bits and pieces e.g. Rugs, lights etc.

If it's any comfort it looks lovely in comparison to my old forces childhood bedrooms.

Toomanytealights · 26/02/2018 16:23

Argos used to do lovely Shaker style furniture you could paint.

SleepFreeZone · 26/02/2018 16:23

Oh yes bunting, love the stuff.

Dairyleigh · 26/02/2018 17:03

Thanks all, that’s an amazing help! So many ideas to think about ☺️

Apple green goes well with pink.

Something like these curtains would look pretty without a complete pink overload.

That's nice and I'm sure it would be good quality but i'd still be tempted to go for something with a bit of colour and pattern even if it was quite cheap. You want her to be able to play on it without worrying if it's going to get marked with pens or get playdough stuck in it etc. It would co-ordinate well but not really add anything imo.
