How did you know it was the right time? Did you just know?

Were you at peace with the decision once you thought it was time?

My dog has osteosarcoma (bone cancer) that has spread to her lungs. About 3 week ago the vet said weeks now rather than months. She stopped eating after breakfast yesterday and won't have anything despite us offering all sorts.

Up until now I didn't think it was time yet and didn't know how I'd make the call but now she's started the process herself I feel irs right to do it now. Obviously I'm devastated to lose her but I don't feel as bad as I thought I would about calling it. I don't want her to starve herself to death and I don't want her to suffer. I want her to have some dignity.

Sorry to hear this. It does sound like it's time now. It was always told better a day too early than a day too late when having pets pts, doesn't make it any easier though.

Eliza9917 · 26/02/2018 13:24

She's only been eating pork chops and sausages since the last vet visit, and more recently egg, ham, haslet and Swedish meatballs. I've tried her with soup, mash, yoghurt, even bread & butter today.

DP has just gone to mcds to offer her a cheeseburger as I know she will eat those but I don't think she'll eat it. I just want to offer it just in case.

We'll be ringing the vets once he gets back.

I think fate has had a hand in today as the car wouldn't start so we've been off work and waiting in this morning. Means I've had extra time with her today (DP works from home) and now we can ring the vets and see when they say to bring her in.

You can have it happen in your car if you want.
My lovely boy went in mine. It was a bit more private that being at the vets and in a space he knew and loved being in.

Someone else told me they had done this and although my get wasn't best pleased, they did it for me.

maddiemookins16mum · 26/02/2018 13:27

You know it's time. I knew when my cat looked at me and I could see in her eyes she'd had enough (in fact to my shame I left it about three days longer than I should have and have never forgiven myself).

Eliza9917 · 26/02/2018 13:32

I'd like to do it on the beach, she loves it there but she's too big todo it there.

Plus I've got a snozza impression kit and pawprint kit that I want to do after. I'm not going to stress her out by trying to do it now.

This is her.

Do not let her suffer, it is the last loving thing you will do for her. I am so sorry.

Orchardgreen · 26/02/2018 13:37

Thinking of you (actually I'm crying) xxx

MaddieElla · 26/02/2018 13:37

They do tell you. My Ella stopped eating but she had a chance of recovery (she had an infection which attacked her liver). One evening, after seeing to be improving she just kept walking up to me and resting her head on my knee. Despite me actually begging her to please get better, I knew then that she was too ill and that she had had enough.

Unfortunately because of her infection it all happened rather quickly and while we had the vet on the phone we made the decision to let her pass at home, the stress of the car ride would have killed her and we didn't want her to die like that. So we cuddled her on the living room floor while she took her last breath.

We got another dog later and she has really mended our hearts but our family will always be a little bit broken by what happened. You know her prognosis and you can help her not to suffer. It will be heartbreaking but you are doing the absolute best for her. I'm really sorry. Flowers

taffett · 26/02/2018 13:41

I am so sorry opThanks
My childhood dog who I grew up with (she was a few months older than me) was pts when I was about 12 (she had not long turned 13). She could no longer walk as her back legs would give in and she's drag them along the floor. Worst day of my life, I didn't even know it was happening I came home from school one day and was told they did it whilst I was in school because they didn't want me upset.
She was a great dog.

I think your dear dog is telling you that it's time though. You're very brave for doing the right thing and she will appreciate it and she knows how much she is loved. ThanksThanks

Quiddichcup · 26/02/2018 13:43

She's beautiful.

meandmytinfoilhat · 26/02/2018 13:48

It sounds like it's time. I'm sorry Op, it's one of the hardest decisions to make.

TheresTheFlyingFuckIDontGive · 26/02/2018 13:49

It does sound as though you know it's time, OP, and my thoughts are with you.

My childhood dog was PTS and we left it longer than we should've. Looking back, we'd have done it sooner and it was more for us than for him. Twenty years and I still cry when I think about him.

DramaAlpaca · 26/02/2018 13:50

It's time. I'm so sorry Flowers

Eliza9917 · 26/02/2018 13:53

She wouldn't even touch the mcds. I knew she wouldn't. DP is on the phone about the car, we'll ring the vets in a min.

So sorry Flowers. It breaks your heart.

stressedoutfred · 26/02/2018 14:13

Thinking of you op, what a beautiful dog xx

MintyChops · 26/02/2018 14:18

I’m so sorry, it’s the hardest thing to do. She is a gorgeous dog. Flowers for you Eliza and a hug. Xx

Chapterandverse · 26/02/2018 14:33

We let our beauty go yesterday. She had had enough. Our hearts are breaking but we know it was the right thing to do for her.

This pic is from last June prior to her diabetes diagnosis.

Be brave 💕🌈

Our vet came to the house and our girl was able to lie in her favourite spot.

Same here - she used to get really stressed at the vets, so we thought it the best way for her.

Catinthebath · 26/02/2018 18:15

Eliza I love that your partner has gone to get her her favourite treat. During my girl’s last few days I hand fed her cheese puffs and mini magnums x

ScreamingValenta · 26/02/2018 18:21

Nothing to add to the advice you have been given, but so sorry you have to make this decision, and to Chapterandverse too - such beautiful dogs Flowers. Chapterandverse you did something lovely for your girl by ensuring her last moments were spent in her favourite place.

sonjadog · 26/02/2018 18:24

So sorry, OP. It is heartbreaking to lose a dog, but it sounds like it is the right thing to do. She is beautiful.

Eliza9917 · 26/02/2018 18:31

We did it earlier. We took her for a little walk first then in to the vets.

They were fantastic. Really kind and didn't care that I proper ugly cried on the floor lol (they did it all on the floor and I laid down with her).

They took the nose impression and paw print after for me too.
