Shelf stacking in Tesco. 20 years ago now, but still in touch with a few of the people I worked with.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 25/02/2018 21:42

Waitress in a Blackpool hotel

Mummadeeze · 25/02/2018 21:46

I fantasised about working on a shoe shop for years and then got a job in one when I was 16 and hated it!!! Moved to a newsagent and loved it.

ALemonyPea · 25/02/2018 21:50

Cleaning hotel rooms, £2.50 an hour. Got £160 every 4 weeks and felt so rich!

juddyrockingcloggs · 25/02/2018 21:52

Apprentice Travel Consultant at Lunn Poly! £60 a week.

Itsbecauseimaleo · 25/02/2018 21:55

Working at a pretzel kiosk when I was 16. I had to wear a yellow apron and it was the brightest thing I'd ever seen. They made me walk up to people and offer samples. The rejections were mortifying. Still can't enjoy pretzels to this day

corythatwas · 25/02/2018 21:57

Supply teaching.

GrandTheftWalrus · 25/02/2018 21:58

@mummadeeze I hated it too. Lasted about 10 weeks

cygnet12 · 25/02/2018 22:05

worked at the local college in the canteen after school when i was 16. i did pot wash, served food and cleaned the tables. they had the mature students in at night. was fab, got free slush puppies and as much dinner as i could fit in, and, cake!

Longdistance · 25/02/2018 22:07

Sainsbury’s check outs. Did this for years as a student, went in to customer services, and all my jobs have been customer related. I’m 42 now, so know my stuff with people.

Salene · 25/02/2018 22:14

McDonald’s

MintChocAddict · 25/02/2018 22:17

Cleaner in a shop at weekends age 15. £1(ish) an hour or thereabouts.Shock
No rules on employing minors then (or none that many employers took any notice of anyway!)

Hippadippadation · 25/02/2018 22:49

Kwik Save, on the checkouts. I got paid the princely sum of £2.53 per hour!

Welshwabbit · 25/02/2018 22:52

Cleaning holiday homes, then Kwik Save checkouts for 4 years.

RealityHasALiberalBias · 25/02/2018 22:57

Waitress in a cafe when I was 13. Can’t remember what I was paid but wasn’t much!

DameBurleyChassis · 25/02/2018 23:01

Silver service banqueting waitress when I was 15. I was awful. £2.32 an hour but I felt like a millionaire when I got my first pay...

Second job was front of house staff in a theatre when I was at university. Best. Job. Ever.

HeyhoIndigo · 25/02/2018 23:09

Packing pregnancy testing kits in a factory. They were called Clearblue and most of us were female students working during our university holidays. We were told we were not allowed to take any but if we wanted any kits we should ask the manager.

It was quite interesting sometimes as I was put in charge of one of the machines and shown how to fix it if it broke down. Also I got involved with quality control plus a couple of times some of us were shown colour samples under different lighting conditions to check for visibility.

I made friends with another girl there; I regret losing touch with her after she moved to the USA S five years later.

recklessgran · 25/02/2018 23:13

Saturday job on the record counter in Woolworths. Showing my age.
Loved it - Rod Stewart's Maggie May on repeat all day long.

ephemeralfairy · 25/02/2018 23:16

Working at my riding school, and then on the checkout in Waitrose.

ButterfliesandMoths · 25/02/2018 23:17

Saturday job in a shoe shop

TheCatsMother44 · 25/02/2018 23:17

Stacking the shelves at sainsburys, it was so dull I begged to be put on the tills so I could speak to people.

FrogCow · 25/02/2018 23:19

Deli counter in a supermarket. Had to clean the rotisserie oven. Draining the Fat Drawer was a particular low point of my working history.

CurlyBlueberry · 25/02/2018 23:26

I worked in the Bear Factory as my first 'proper' job. I hated it, as the smallest/youngest they used to make me wear the bear costume for kids' parties. It was never washed and it stank, and got really hot in there. But the money was nice (I think it was something like £4 an hour? Whatever minimum wage was in 2005) and it taught me a lot about the working world.
