A neighbour did the right thing and rehomed their beautiful husky a few months ago as they couldn't commit to the amount time it takes to properly care for it. Today they proudly showed off to us all their new border collie puppy. It's beautiful but really?! Out of all the dogs you could get...

Aibu to not be impressed and hoick up my judgy pants here?

@FiveShelties
Five! I have one tiny one and there is so much fur!

ShortandAnnoying · 26/02/2018 17:32

Did anyone see the show 10 puppies and us? One of the pups was a collie that was being trained to be a mountain rescue dog. Because the trainer wasn't allowed to take it on long walks on the mountain and over exercise it during the day he found it absolutely exhausting. It wanted to play all evening and he had to get a friend to keep an eye on it while he had a shower.

I've known 3 people over the years who've had Border Collies. They all said 'Never again'.

Severide08 · 26/02/2018 19:22

We have an elderly Border Collie and a Collie X .They are super clever dogs and will get bored very easily and then they will end up probably a lot of destruction and probably another rehomed dog .They are super dogs my Collie X is a real live wire ,super protective of her family .We got a stair gate to stop her getting upstairs in the day ,kept finding it open .Managed to catch her in the act one day .She had realised if we didnt put catch on the bottom she could flick it open with her paw. Fantastic dogs but you need to be prepared for them and they truly don't sound like they are .

Severide08 · 26/02/2018 19:25

Pink he is gorgeous ,looks so chilled there. Our 15yr old collie will still launch into a run if she spots a strange cat on the garden wall Smile.

I just love BCs and still miss my lovely girl even a year after she died. However, they aren’t easy dogs to have- as bright as anything which gallons of energy.
Just a thought....it anyone else has lovely BC photos to share I’m very happy to coo at your beautiful round-uppers!

HelloFreedom · 26/02/2018 19:48

Border collie pup. Blimey. They're either ignorant or arrogant (or both).

Not a dog for the majority of people.

ErinSophia · 26/02/2018 19:53

I have a Border Collie and he's more lazy than energetic tbh.

hmcAsWas · 26/02/2018 19:56

Oh dear Lord, why do people do this?

Its so easy to look up breed characteristics online and match them with your lifestyle

Sarahh2014 · 26/02/2018 19:57

It's irresponsible to get that type of breed if you can't handle the level of exercise they need.I got a Chihuahua as they are relatively low maintenance compared to previous breeds we've owned

Dipitydoda · 26/02/2018 20:07

Unless they have got a field with a flock of sheep out back they are mental! Border collies aren’t pets are they? They belong working on the farm. Or if you have one don’t you need to be a serious hiker or something? Are they a particular kind of stupid or just not able to read at least a couple of websites about selecting the right breed

GabsAlot · 26/02/2018 20:09

people are idiots i wish there was a license or test to own certain dogs

Lloyd45 · 26/02/2018 20:44

Collies make fantastic agility dogs. Where I keep my horse, there is a sheep dog who is so smart, the farmer says he's smarter than him and I can believe it, he rounds up the sheep without the farmer saying a word, I have never seen a dog enjoy his work so much, he can watch a 100 sheep and the farmer at the same time.

I wouldn't say ours was every lazy, but certainly didn't mind us not being 'serious hikers'. We would just walk and throw the ball until she needed a nice rest and was panting. Worked for us. Now, one of her favourite things is playing football in the garden with DD. She's so gentle, she will walk nicely on the lead with a 2 year old walking her! Love her to pieces.

alpineibex · 26/02/2018 22:00

We adopted ours when her original owner (elderly lady) died. She has a thing for elderly women (like my grandma) and will make a beeline for them when we are out, tail going! :)

ShortandAnnoying · 26/02/2018 22:30

@alpinebex my dog is a rescue too, we don't know her original owners but she loves teenage boys and always makes a beeline for any we meet.

RandomMess · 26/02/2018 22:45

My rescue loves children and pushchairs and is scared of men Sad

alpineibex · 26/02/2018 23:12

Here's mine
Lady who took the photo has 4 borders now!

alpineibex · 26/02/2018 23:13

I say mine but she's really my grandparents' Grin

alpineibex · 26/02/2018 23:15

@RandomMess

Coincidentally, ours was wary of men for around the first year or soSad

MrsMaxwell · 26/02/2018 23:17

DH ex has a husky which is her partners and a staffy which bit her and they had put down. They then moved in together and got a cross breed rescue dog which got the husky pregnant and had 6 puppies one of which they are keeping.

They leave the dogs in the kitchen all day while they are at work 🙈Angry

SuperBeagle · 26/02/2018 23:23

We have a 7 year old border collie.

We live on 100 acres, and he gets at least an hour walk off the property a day (for stimulation purposes), and he's still got energy to burn 24/7.

They will be in for a shock. They are working dogs, and get destructive (and sometimes aggressive) when not stimulated enough.

Tringley · 26/02/2018 23:46

Quite a step down

A step down? I have nothing against huskies but Border Collies are the most intelligent of all dogs by quite some margin. If you are going to (be a dickehead and) measure dogs on some sort of breed based worth, then any and all dogs are a massive step down from a BC. They are the pinnacle of canine breed manipulation. (I'm not even a BC owner, I just know dogs.)

BCs are also massively agile and energetic and need as much if not more exercise as a Husky, though in a different way as Huskies have specific needs. They need masses of stimulation, and not just physically. A BC is as smart as a smart preschooler and needs that intelligence stimulated constantly. Love and the tonnes of exercise they need isn't enough, their minds need to be worked. A very, very rewarding dog for the right owner (though that's true of all of them).

SuperBeagle · 26/02/2018 23:59

Tringley

Australian Kelpies are arguably more intelligent than BCs. Wink

Butterandsugar · 28/02/2018 16:18

No. They're really not.

Very clever though? Yes.
