To think this is an okay lunch for DS?

I made an easy Sunday dinner today. There was a bit too much for this evening so I've sent some leftovers for DS when my mum looks after him tomorrow whilst we're in work.

The small plate of leftovers consist of carrot + swede mash, potatoes, broccoli + leek cheese and peas. I've just spoken to my mother to let her know he's sorted for lunch tomorrow and she doesn't seem to think its an adequate lunch. When I asked her why, she couldn't actually give me a reason Confused

For context, breakfast will be Weetabix or porridge with raspberries, for lunch its the leftovers followed by some fruit + yoghurt, and dinner will be scrambled egg on toast with another portion of fruit. Plus two small snacks. He's a few days shy of 12 months.

AIBU to think its a perfectly adequate meal?

Kids in the UK have way too much protein. It’s fine!

Tigger85 · 25/02/2018 20:32

Plenty of protein, peas are high in protein, so is broccoli and theres cheese. Most people dont have a clue about nutrition and seem to think protein is only in meat which is probably why your mum thinks it's inadequate.

Is absolutely fine. I have never sat and thought hard about the nutritional content in each meal I ever prepared for my children. My youngest is now 17 and they are all fit and healthy.

DS (21) refused to eat any vegetables except potatoes from about aged 3 to 8. He's a strapping 6ft 2 rugby player now. PS throughout his teenage years he spent most of his free time sitting in McD's and Pizza Hut with his mates. None of them have died from malnutrition.

Tigger don't forget the 3 egg omelettes that some mumsnetters think are the only acceptable breakfast. Grin

seems like loads of food - doubt if i could eat all that in a day

How on earth could you possibly say that when you have no idea of portion size? Breakfast could be a third of a weetabix with four raspberries...and so on.

Some of these replies have tickled me.

FWIW, my mum doesn't eat meat except for fish, and she does respect my wishes with not giving DS meat from supermarket etc. She adores him and looks after him two days a week - I often pack bits of food for him as I never expect her to buy everything for him, even though I know she enjoys providing for him. We are very close, and she's a wonderful Nan to him. I'm fairly relaxed but the few certain things I do ask of her, she always follows. Its definitely not because she wanted to make him something as my Gran isn't very well so she hasn't had time to sort food for him. I'm just baffled as to why she doesn't think its a decent meal, I'll ask her tomorrow.

What has amused me though is one PP stated the amount of food is too much for her, yet for some PPs its too little for their kids! I offer him a variety of foods, he has a food appetite and from day 1 I've let him self regulate - if he's full, that's fine to leave some food if he's hungry, I give him more. He's a VERY active child so burns everything off and is in 18-24m clothes already (very tall) so I must be doing something right Grin

I'm not at all concerned about his overall diet, just fascinated as to why my mum thinks this lunch would be lacking.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone.

Jesus some people! It sounds absolutely fine to me OP- protein in the egg, and a nice veggie option for lunch. We don't need meat to fill up- not even we do so I doubt your little one does!

It's actually very hard to not consume enough protein... There's protein in the potatoes, broccoli and peas and lots in the cheese. Both Weetabix and porridge contain protein and will presumably have milk on (lots of protein in milk!) Yoghurt is high in protein, eggs are high in protein and bread also contains a significant amount of protein. Honestly, no need whatsoever to worry about lack of protein!!
