Trumps food box proposal

TitaniasCloset · 25/02/2018 16:42

I just heard that Trump is planning to replace some of the money people get for food stamps with food boxes of dried food instead. I'm not sure if I understand this correctly but AIBU to think this is a terrible idea and will negatively affect the most vulnerable families? I just don't understand most Americans attitude towards welfare.

Short news clip outlining the proposal

It's Trump! Were you expecting a good idea? He's basically a spoilt toddler dressed as a Wotsit!

TitaniasCloset · 25/02/2018 16:46

I was yelling at the telly the other day and suddenly thought 'maybe i should just change the channel'

TitaniasCloset · 26/02/2018 12:20

I'm still a bit shocked he was elected in the first place. But I think this move has even woken up some people who voted for h

It's idiotic. How can they get them to every poor family, especially in rural areas and how can that be cheaper than just giving benefits? How do they think they're not going to get stolen if there's nowhere secure to leave it (which there won't be)? How is it supposed to be 'healthier' if they can't put fresh food in?

Good news is it almost certainly won't happen, as supermarkets that do well of benefit recipients will lobby hard against it, and we know that the GOP can be bought by anyone with enough lobbying power.

TitaniasCloset · 26/02/2018 16:19

Yeah I don't think Walmart will take this lying down.

I'm still waiting for America to announce it was a long drawn out April Fools. Fingers crossed for this year.

The man is an idiot and makes me feel bloody lucky to live in the UK. He makes Theresa May look like a saint!

MrsJayy · 26/02/2018 16:24

He is basically saying people who are on welfare deserve basic rations the man never fails to repulse me.

LineysHorseWithNoName · 26/02/2018 16:32

So everyone runs the risk of getting a ration pack that's unsuitable for their age, and possibly medical conditions (e.g. diabetes, bowel disorders, auto-immune diseases, allergies)? And that might need cooking with fuel they don't have?

Ructation · 26/02/2018 16:38

Still blows my mind that so many people thought Trump was a better option than Hillary Clinton.

But you know... Benghazi! Emails!

interesting npr article on this - comparing it to historical treatment of native americans

Ructation · 26/02/2018 16:44

Yeah I don't think Walmart will take this lying down.

I had assumed that Walmart would be one of the box providers, in which case they're onto a winner.

Echobelly · 26/02/2018 16:49

Oh no, I think they were talking about it being a cheap option because they could cut deals with wholesalers. rolls eyes

Julie8008 · 26/02/2018 16:52

So there might be same problems implementing this but might actually be a good idea. Some people trade food stamps for a smaller amount of cash so they can buy booze and smokes. The families might be better off with actual food. And it might help with the obesity epidemic.

TheDowagerCuntess · 26/02/2018 16:53

His base with love this move.

The conservative right hate anything with a 'whiff' of socialism about it. And welfare absolutely has that.

Anyone who's poor in America deserves everything they get. If they haven't pulled themselves up and attained the 'American dream', they have no-one to blame but themselves.

And they should be bloody grateful for a box of dried food stuffs.

Honestly - if decent Americans haven't come to their senses, and don't turn out in droves for the mid-terms in November, then they deserve Trump and worse.

I have several friends receiving SNAP. They are spending the money on food. I know it's fun to think of them all as wasters who are boozing and smoking away their benefits, but actually the vast majority are working people with families, who are struggling on low incomes.

QuestionableMouse · 26/02/2018 17:59

It's a terrible idea. There's no way one box can provide all for all the possibilities. Fuel poverty is a real thing; it's fine getting the food but it's not much use to you if you can't cook it. There's a reason so many people are overweight when calories are cheap and actual nutrition isn't.

As it is, food stamps can only be spent on a range of things. You can't buy shampoo, or soap powder or tampons. Just food, and maybe not everything you'd actually like to buy like fresh fruit or veg.

Fekko · 26/02/2018 18:02

What about fresh fruit and veg? Is he hoping that food banks (I assume they have these in the US although they don’t seem all that generous to the poor) will pick up the slack?

Deshasafraisy · 26/02/2018 18:10

I bet Trump lovin’ Theresa will be inspired by him and introduce it here.

Welshmaenad · 26/02/2018 18:15

I have enough issues with the notion of 'food stamps' versus cash benefits, so this is pretty hideous IMO.

Fine for people with cooking skills and suitable cooking equipment and unfussy children. Wasteful patronising nightmare for the majority of imagine.

Fekko · 26/02/2018 18:15

I dont think she likes him. He’s an awfully loud, coarse, common little man from the ex colonies...

LineysHorseWithNoName · 26/02/2018 18:19

Theresa May can try, but it wouldn't wash here, in public health terms.

People need fresh food, fuel, soap, basic medicines, and women and girls need sanitary products. Some elders need extra things too, that for them are essentials.

Telling ourselves it's all going on fags is ludicrous - take it up with British American Tobacco, if people are that badly and dangerously addicted.
