Trumps food box proposal

I just heard that Trump is planning to replace some of the money people get for food stamps with food boxes of dried food instead. I'm not sure if I understand this correctly but AIBU to think this is a terrible idea and will negatively affect the most vulnerable families? I just don't understand most Americans attitude towards welfare.

Short news clip outlining the proposal

You can currently buy fruit and veg with food stamps - in fact a lot of farmers markets accept EBT cards now.

It sounds like under Trump's plan, half your SNAP benefits would be replaced with a food box, and the other half you'd still receive loaded onto your EBT card to buy the food you didn't get in the box.

Julie808 good to get a different perspective.
I think if the box provided seriously cheap fresh products, which could be done, I might support the idea more, or if there was a lot of choice, I mean this could be a way of using up very cheap food that would be binned anyway and I'm on benefits myself, the idea of a big box of healthy food being sent to me every fortnight interests me, but do you really think that's going to happen? And as for me, I already know the cheapest places to buy rice and pasta and I'm not a great cook so flour would be no good to me.

I'm in the uk though thank God.

To cook from scratch you need basic things, the fats and oils to cook with or spices and seasoning, a decent cooker and enough fuel. And if they are sending out flour etc you might need a bloody bread maker too,

I don't think Theresa likes Trump, just the feeling I get.

But can you get it as cheap as a government mass purchasing them? Would this not encourage you to become a better/healthier cook? Maybe pass those skills onto your children?

I am trying to improve my cooking skills. Just checked the price of s big bag of flour from Tesco 55p I don't think I would need it any cheaper than that.

I would be interested in a big box of cheap vegetables home delivered though. Onions potatoes, salad stuff.

oh god the Tories will be watching this with interest if it comes of,coming to the UK soon no doubt

His next idea will probably be to give the poor guns and tell them to go out and hunt their own food. Anything to please the NRA.

I'm pretty sure from some reading I did a while ago there is already an issue in the US of poorer people getting fresh food . Doesn't sound se to improve based on this. Its another attack on poor, vulnerable people.

Trump's gang love the power and control. Its all about the fact they're paying so they get to approve everything. You can only have approved food or approved expenditure.

I do think that, in the UK, there is now a lack of functional cooking skills. I don't mean an interest in cooking but that less people know how to make do with little. Maybe it would be good to provide people with help in this area.

TBH this is pretty much how life already is in many poor rural states. Certainly in mine. Many people here get pretty much all their meat from hunting.
