I mean, the sight of Jamie Fraiser in his kilt. Good Lord how did I let this show pass me by!
I watched the Wedding episode the other night (I'm only on episode 8), never known DH so quiet Grin

On the one hand, it doesn’t sound like my thing.

On the other, dear God...a Scottish accent on a good-looking man (or even a fairly average one, tbh) KILLS me. Almost drooling at the mere thought. Blush

AKAmyself · 26/02/2018 14:42

Love love love Outlander. We have a thread over in Telly Addicts, it’s called lassies of Lallybroch. Come over and join the fun!

ALemonyPea · 26/02/2018 14:53

DH loves this, I'm not so keen on it. I call it 50 shades of tartan.

ConciseandNice · 27/02/2018 17:53

I watched the first episode last night. It felt like one of the longest hours ever. It does have potential though. Should I stick it out? Or will it just not be my thing, based on the first episode. Plus how annoying is Claire??

SenecaFalls · 27/02/2018 18:05

Claire can be annoying but, to me, in an endearing kind of way. She's a woman who knows her own mind and won't listen to advice so she manages to get herself and others in all kinds of scrapes, ranging from dire and life-threatening, to merely amusing.

The production values are very high in Outlander, and it's worth it to watch for the costumes and sets alone.

Someone said it's not historically accurate. Much of it is, but the biggest issue is that the Jacobite rising is depicted as a fight between the Scots and the English, when it was actually between the British government and the supporters of the Stuart succession, most of whom were Catholic or Episcopalian. Many Scots, especially nearly all Presbyterians, were supporters of the Government.

Spoiler alert here: It is very historically correct on the migration to North Carolina and much of what is depicted in the colonies.

Notonthestairs · 27/02/2018 18:44

Concise - i remember the first episode dragging but the story gets going properly at Castle Leoch so try another episode or two before you bin it. The first series is great, interesting plot with proper will they/won't they conflict (or should she/shouldn't she), cinematography is beautiful and lots of kilts knocking about.

Jamie does nothing for me. Murtagh on the other hand.

misskatamari · 27/02/2018 19:02

I started series one yesterday thanks to this thread and already LOVE it!

snozzlemaid · 27/02/2018 19:13

Yay! A new convert.
I'm always jealous when I hear of people watching it for the first time.

RaininSummer · 27/02/2018 19:23

I love this series. May have to rewatch soon.

CoraPirbright · 27/02/2018 19:23

I always used to think of Gaelic as a rather gutteral, unpleasant sounding language but, dear god in heaven, when Sam Heughan/Jamie whispers sweet Gaelic nothings in lucky old Claire’s ear.......

SH for the new Bond, I say!!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 27/02/2018 20:00

The person who recommended it to me didn’t tell me how racy it is...

I was watching the first episode on a train, and turned it off sharpish when we got cunnilingus in a castle 15 minutes in! I have watched the rest since though Grin

PrimalLass · 27/02/2018 20:02

I struggle to watch it, but it is full-on BRILLIANT for the local economy.

I tried to watch it. Got two episodes in and gave up. It's awful! The time travel woman gets on my tits too.

YY

Really gave it a good go as I had heard it was brilliant, plus some of the locations are not a million miles away from me - but omg what a pile of rubbish! Plus that Claire actress is awful.

PrimalLass · 27/02/2018 20:07

There was a tiny bit filmed in our village, early on.

I was at a conference last week and they were talking about how massive the Outlander market is in the US. Anything that helps, tbh, is a good thing.

SenecaFalls · 27/02/2018 20:12

Plus that Claire actress is awful"

She was a bit stiff in the beginning, but she really grows and matures as an actor as the series progresses.

ShawshanksRedemption · 27/02/2018 20:18

Another big fan here too. Both characters have their faults that's what to me makes their relationship so believable. The actors have such great chemistry and yes, my DH also groans whenever I'm rewatching and the sex scenes are on, but then we've both watched Game of Thrones and he's not refused to watch that!

Jamie is very easy on the eye, but Sam doesn't do anything for me! Too clean cut LOL.

Lollyb86 · 27/02/2018 20:22

Love it! Binge read all the books and enjoyed them too. Complete escapism Brew

sonjadog · 27/02/2018 20:51

I was rewatching the first episode this evening. My goodness but Frank bores on about history a lot! In a fatherly, «let me educate you» kind of way. She was well shot of him.

giggly · 28/02/2018 00:04

Is the boatsheds at Kilsyth or Bowling then?

Gingersstuff · 28/02/2018 00:12

I bloody love Outlander.
If you remember the scene at the mill with the water wheel where Jamie's magnificent buttocks were bared looking for his shirt and I drooled like a St Bernard it was filmed literally 5 minutes away from my house.

TigerTrumpet · 28/02/2018 00:13

They were filming near me last week. All behind a wall and under tent things so I didn't get to see much. So excited for the next series!

gryffen · 28/02/2018 00:16

I live 5 mins from pollok park and I'm fr9m Fife so Falkland and Culross are my stomping grounds. Gotta love the whole cast and crew.

AnnaConda2 · 07/07/2020 03:24

I'm a very late convert to 'Outlander' and I'm so addicted! I've skim-read the first couple of books and, while there's a lot to like about them (great universe, nice writing style, interesting characters), my inner feminist/believer in gender equality can't deal with some of the content from the first book... In my humble opinion, Diana Gabaldon has some pretty 'effed up' ideas about romance...

On the other hand, I love the TV show's depiction of Claire and Jamie. I'm not normally a big fan of sex scenes, but, in my opinion, 'Outlander' does them well (it doesn't hurt that I'm bi and both Jamie and Claire are hot!)

However, there's a lot more to the series than sex, and I feel that it's still worth watching 'Outlander'-even if you skip over these scenes.

Despite the slight historical inaccuracy (which the author acknowledges), 'The Devil's Mark' is a particularly good episode. The acting is superb and the (non sexual) chemistry between Claire and Geillis really drives this episode. These events mark another significant milestone in Claire and Jamie's relationship and made me fall deeper in love with the couple.

I'm hoping to visit Scotland in the near future and, even if 'Outlander' is only fiction (😢), I'll be sure to pack some gemstones and a few essential modern day items... 😉

Scatterlingsofafrica · 07/07/2020 04:08

I’m a late convert too- I have never this addicted to a series before! Absolutely love it and have to keep looking up the historical background after episode. Am in mild shock though after watching episode 2 of season 4 ... the lynching of the slave... terribly sad and depressing, and horribly relevant to the current situation.
