I saw someone say on the other thread jobs they wouldn't want their kids to do there are jobs they wouldn't want their kids to do so thought I would start a thread on it

For me - I wouldnt want my kids to become reality TV stars - especially big brother stars

A Labour politician, or ANYTHING to do with the Labour party whatsoever. Or a journalist.

I am lucky though, as both my kids have great jobs, which they are happily successful at.

It took me until I was 56 to get my perfect job. I have it now, and it was well worth waiting for.

HopefullyAnonymous · 25/02/2018 12:04

I’m also intrigued to know why so many are against their DCs joining the police. I’m a serving officer so have my reasons, but would love to know why everyone else on the thread is against it?

C0untDucku1a · 25/02/2018 12:04

Soldier
Teacher
Police officer
Paramedic
Sex industry
Retail - shop floor. Obs head office is very different.

Chewbecca · 25/02/2018 12:05

I had never really considered 'reality TV star' to be a 'job' to be honest!

I'd be happy for DS to be in any profession if that is what he wants, quite sad people say they wouldn't want their children to be lawyers, teachers, NHS workers, policemen etc.

Any job that the child is happy doing and that doesn't harm others or themselves is probably the goal I would think.

BoonDucks · 25/02/2018 12:05

A job that you don't love.
Of course a well paid job makes life easier but to get out of bed every day and look forward to going to work is a privilege few achieve.
One of my DC is a teacher. They love it. Such a shame it's so under valued and under paid.

greendale17 · 25/02/2018 12:05

Sex industry
Army/ Navy
Retail/ Restaurants
Police

Moussemoose · 25/02/2018 12:05

A model. Standing around looking attractive. It just seems demeaning.

Boys or girls.

C0untDucku1a · 25/02/2018 12:06

For me hopefully because it is under resourced and can be dangerous and i see society getting worse, not better.

Chewbecca · 25/02/2018 12:06

Also worth mentioning that I have several police officer friends who are very happy in their roles & have had really varied, interesting careers so am really unsure why this is such a 'red zone' position.

iamthere123 · 25/02/2018 12:07

Teacher - after weeks off with work related stress and anxiety I finally went back last week and I have spent 5 hours yesterday and 3 hours so far today planning for week and resourcing for Monday maths! Just stopped for lunch and looked at the pile of assessment that I have to do that was taught when I was off and I still have Literacy, grammar and Guided Reading to resource. I could actually cry.

sallyandherarmy · 25/02/2018 12:08

I would presume it is because of the 'snowflake' attitude of this, and the next, generation.

Long gone are the days when it was seen as a honour to serve your country. If the past generations had had that attitude, we wouldn't have half of what we have today. Free speech, for one. Although that is also fast disappearing now :(

ButtMuncher · 25/02/2018 12:09

Exactly the same as NotagainYoda

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 25/02/2018 12:10

Door-to-door sales or outbound call centre work.

phoenix1973 · 25/02/2018 12:10

Any job where they can't be their true selves and have to constantly swallow negative feelings and grit their teeth to get through another shit day of shit treatment for shit pay with shit colleagues and shit customers.
Or a drug dealer or prostitute. I've never heard of a happy one.

HopefullyAnonymous · 25/02/2018 12:10

I said it on the other thread and I’ll say it again, I love my job. Without being too outing, I don’t work for a home office force so we are affected to a lesser degree by budget cuts etc but it’s the underfunding and prevalence of officers now being forced to go out single crewed that means I’d be wary of my kids following in my footsteps.

Birdsgottafly · 25/02/2018 12:11

Right Wing Politics, or anything that will really endanger them, such as the Army. I wouldn't want them to have anything to do with the Police, with them being so corrupt, hypocritical and not doing their job properly. Likewise any role within Prisons.

My happiest working time was in an Off Licence and Chalet cleaning. Then I did a Degree and the stress wasn't worth the money.

I'd support them if they wanted enough money to get by and an easy working life. We are in the Northwest, so that's doable.

EssentialHummus · 25/02/2018 12:12

I'm an ex City lawyer - I used my inflated salary and long hours (so no time to spend money) to set up my own business, buy a home and now generally have a wonderful work/life balance. Stating as an antidote to some of the reservations people have mentioned re the City/law.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 25/02/2018 12:12

Just wondering what the problem is with banking? My dp works in banking and it's not all 'evil, sell your soul for money' etc. There can be nice banking jobs. However I'm a credit controller and it's the most soul destroying thankless job in the world and one I wouldn't wish on my dd.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 25/02/2018 12:13

I wouldnt want my niece & nephew to be in the sex, arms or tobacco industries.

TheSconeOfStone · 25/02/2018 12:15

Having grown up with a dad in the army, and seeing his inability to cope with civilian life I would be concerned about DC joining the services.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 25/02/2018 12:16

Oh! Thought of another, related one. MLM.

Sex industry sort of goes without saying - tbh I don't really think of it as a 'job' in the normal sense.

And I obviously wouldn't want them doing anything unethical, but by the time they're old enough for jobs their ethics are their own and it's NOMB.

Minniemountain · 25/02/2018 12:17

So long as he genuinely enjoyed it and had a knack for it, I wouldn't mind.
I was going to say solicitor (like I am) but that's because I've seen so many graduates go for it as a default option, plug away as paralegals and never get anywhere.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 25/02/2018 12:17

(Barring anything illegal or outrageously egregious, of course. Posted too soon)

Blackteadrinker77 · 25/02/2018 12:18

Sex worker
Reality T.V
Armed forces
Prison guard
Police officer
Prime Minister
SAHP

AmysTiara · 25/02/2018 12:20

Anything they hated. It's soul destroying doing a job you hate.
