To wonder if my friends will get divorced?

Group of 7, all happily married (afaik) and done with children.

I sometimes wonder statistically is it possible 10 years from now that out of 7 marriages will we all still be together?

I wonder this too, actually.

I think it's because my parents divorced - horribly and ruined my childhood - and despite being in a happy marriage myself now, I still don't think I can quite believe they work. I hope I'm proved wrong.

YANBU to wonder- I’ve got a group of 8 couples and I did wonder the same thing on a recent night out.
YABVVVVVU to consider late 20s middle aged.

It's fairly unlikely, but there are demographic factors that make people less likely to divorce and as you probably know, people gravitate towards similar people. So if you're all first time marriers, that reduces the chances of divorce because it's more common amongst people who have been divorced already. Religion is a factor, and ethnic group too. And again people often have friends whose backgrounds are the same as them.

Mid 20's is not what I call middle aged.

So yes, 1/2 of you may get divorced.

In your 40's or 50's, with 20-30 years marriage behind you, as most of our friends are, it might be more likely.

The age range at which divorce is most common is 45-49 (in the UK).

So it’s a little early to say, OP! Come back in 20 years and let us know if you’re all still married.

VladmirsPoutine · 25/02/2018 15:22

Why is that @Arapaima? Genuine question? I used to think it might be much later than that because of dc leaving for uni or moving out or whatever. But now we're having children later it seems to me like divorces either happen when dcs are still very little or when they've left. I do wonder about this.

Arapaima · 25/02/2018 15:34

I don’t know why Vlad. It’s just statistically the most likely.

Take a look at the ONS website for other fun facts about the divorce rate!

VladmirsPoutine · 25/02/2018 15:37

I didn't know the ONS did this - shamefully really as I used to use them as a reference point some years ago about something totally unrelated!
